Chapter 6

"No wonder the manager is so serious. With a client like that, we won’t have to worry about this year’s performance!" "Did you see Mr. Anderson? He’s so handsome! And isn’t that woman with him his rumored fiancée?" "Seems like it. She’s stunning. How do these people look even better in person than in photos?" "Money, of course." "Sigh, we’ll never understand the world of the rich." Jane vaguely heard the whispers outside. If only they knew he was a demon, would they still be so excited? Her eyes shifted to Andrew Smith he was sitting upright, visibly more serious than the others. Just then, someone entered the room. "Jane Adler, the manager wants you and your team in the conference room." Andrew immediately stood and walked out with three others. As he passed Jane, he paused and said coldly, "Remember what I told you. Don’t interrupt." "I’m the head of the project. I speak when I’m supposed to," Jane replied with a calm smile. Andrew was caught off guard by her composure, but said nothing as she walked ahead of him. Inside the 40-square-meter conference room, the manager was already greeting the client. "Mr. Anderson, rest assured. We’re professionals and will definitely meet your expectations."Then he turned to the team. "This is one of our most capable teams. They’ve prepared complete solutions for the issues you raised." As the manager stepped aside, Jane’s expression shifted cold and unreadable. Sitting at the head of the table was Logan Anderson. She had considered the possibility of running into him, but this… this was too sudden. The moment Logan’s eyes met hers, Jane quickly looked away, pretending not to see him.Even standing among four men, as petite as she was, Logan spotted her immediately. Jane? No. It couldn’t be her. The woman in front of him was far too elegant, too polished, too breathtaking. Not the quiet, country girl he had once married. This woman dressed sharply, exuding power couldn't be the same person he’d lost. But she was. The moment their eyes briefly met, something inside him twisted painfully. His chest tightened, a familiar ache rushing back. She looked even more beautiful than he remembered. More confident. More distant. He hadn't realized how much he loved her… not until she left. Not until he searched endlessly for her. Not until madness had nearly consumed him. And that photo— the one that shattered him—her in bed with another man, taken right after the divorce. He had believed it was her revenge. "Mr. Anderson? Mr. Anderson?" Manager Kim called twice, snapping Logan from his thoughts. The woman beside Logan—Vanessa Young, his rumored fiancée—followed his gaze and locked eyes with Jane. Her eyes flickered with emotion, but her voice remained calm. "Let your team settle in first."Manager Kim nodded quickly and gestured to the group to sit. Jane, being the head of the project, should’ve taken the seat beside Logan. But without hesitation, she moved to the far end of the table. Logan's eyes followed her subtly, lingering on her before he cleared his throat. "Manager Kim, please introduce your team." Manager Kim smiled and began, "This is Andrew Smith, one of our top programmers. Beside him are Brent Carter, Lucas Underwood, and Wyatt Jones. And finally—our newest member, transferred in just for this project—she’s the lead and our most valuable asset. She recently designed the electric propelled rocket that’s made headlines globally. A true genius." He still didn’t mention her name. Jane showed no reaction. Her expression was calm, unreadable, as if Logan were a stranger in the room. Logan couldn’t stop staring. He searched for even a flicker of emotion, a c***k in her mask—anything to tell him she still remembered. Still felt something. But he found nothing. Except those eyes. Those same blue eyes… that once looked at him with love. Now, they were cold stars in a night sky. "Logan, we have other appointments. Shall we begin?" Vanessa said, her voice a bit tighter now. Logan tore his gaze away, nodding slowly. "Yes. Let's begin."Andrew rose to present, addressing Logan’s earlier concerns, but his words were hollow to Logan’s ears. His mind was still with Jane, seated at the far end like she didn’t once belong to him. When Andrew stumbled slightly over a technical detail, Logan’s voice cut through the room. "Let the new girl take over." His eyes never left Jane. There was a heavy pause in the room. Andrew glanced at Jane, irritation flickering in his eyes. He had worked on this project day and night, and now he was being pushed aside. “Mr. Anderson, I was just about to—” “I said,” Logan repeated, his tone calm but firm, “let her speak.” All eyes turned to Jane. She didn’t flinch. Instead, she rose from her seat with graceful composure, collected her tablet, and walked slowly to the head of the table without so much as a glance at Logan. The room fell silent. She stood confidently, her voice cool and professional. “ Regarding the Galax-Zee project,"she began her voice steady,"I ran a duel-framework stimulation and discovered that your current prototype is likely to fail under external interference above 3.6 terahertz. That margin is enough to collapse the core system if deployed." The room grew still. Engineers mouth dropped in disbelief. This was something they were not able to detect in months she spotted the errors under few seconds. Logan's brows drew together. Jane continued, swiping to a diagram. "This redesign shifts the control sequence into a tiered buffer with quantum redundancy something your previous model obviously lacked. It is faster. Cleaner. And it's won't implode mid-orbit." As she continued, Logan didn’t hear a word of the presentation. He was watching the movement of her lips, the calm precision in her tone, the way she commanded attention. This wasn’t the same woman who used to wait up for him at night, hoping he’d stay a little longer. This woman... had become a storm. When she finished, she stepped back without waiting for praise. Logan leaned back, his gaze unreadable. “Impressive,” he said at last.Jane didn’t smile. “I know. You can either continue with your flawed model or trust someone who actually knows how to build it right” she replied and returned to her seat. Manager Kim glanced nervously between them. No one said a word. Logan stood slowly "you're show about this analysis?" Jane looked directly at Logan for the first time, cool and poised. "I was the lead systems architect for the ZenithX mission. You know it because your company tried to buy it last year." A Sharp intake of breath swept across the room. Logan stared at her. He didn't know whether to be furious or awe. "Then prove it," he said at last with a low voice. Jane gave a faint, cold smile. "I already have." Manager Kim gave a nervous chuckle, clearly trying to ease the tension. “Well then, shall we move on to the budgeting projections?” But Logan wasn’t listening. His thoughts were spiraling. How could she look at him like he meant nothing? Vanessa leaned closer and whispered, “You’re distracted.” Logan didn’t respond. Because in that moment, watching Jane flip through her notes like he was invisible, one terrifying thought settled in his chest— She’s really not the same woman anymore.
