"Are you Zelda's brother?" Nan asked, looking surprised. I was about to explain the situation—that Xander was my brother through marriage—but before I could, James spoke up. "Do you have an issue with that?" he asked his tone calm but with an underlying challenge. I frowned. It seemed that James was deliberately letting Nan believe that, without correcting him. I knew this was intentional. Nan, completely unaware, changed his tune, apologizing to James and offering to get drinks for everyone. He turned to James, asking if he was thirsty. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the boy, as James was clearly messing with him. "He's not thirsty!" I cut in, stopping Nan before he went off to fetch drinks. "Don’t worry about him," I added, not wanting to see Nan get used this way.
