  My chest tightened as I stared at Cheng, his words cutting through the noise around me.   "What did you say," I demanded, my voice low and tense.   He swallowed before continuing, "I just received a call from Xavier. Your wife has a high fever and has been sent to the hospital."   I didn’t wait for him to finish.
