Chapter9

The sound of combat dwindled as I raced through the trees, branches slamming into my face and ripping my clothes. Like a wolf, my instincts drove me forward, and the desperation sharpened every breath. Since I can remember, Bustane has ruled these territories as an unstoppable Alpha warrior, making him a force to be reckoned with. But the sheer agonizing power of our new enemies moved even him, if only slightly. It was clear that none was safe from the Hunters' deadly rage, not even the formidable Lycan King, even when they used strong magic or technology. This meant that before they could unleash that black energy once more, we had to move quickly to gather enough protections. My mind was buzzing with ideas and plans as I got closer to a fallen tree. Where should I look first for allies in this upcoming battle? There were a lot of Bustane's soldiers and civilians gathered at the main settlement, but I wasn't sure if the Hunters had also attacked there. The fear of innocent ones being dragged into violence shook me. Pups, new mothers, seasoned warriors, and elders, they were all precious members of our family. We urgently needed to find them and keep them safe, even as we prepared to join the fight again. The image of Bianca's obedient face suddenly flashed through my mind as if I was reading my suspicious thoughts . In fact she was the one who facilitated my own attempts to escape! Somehow, somehow, she had an inside knowledge of the hunters’ activities, safe houses, and so on. If Bianca was still out there and not captured, finding her would not only help strengthen our forces but could also give us important information to aid our cause. As my path became clearer, that thought brought some comfort. If I reached the cell where Bianca and I had been held captive and followed the path back to the Hunters' camp. Hopefully, there would be signs or clues indicating if she had also escaped. And if she was still captured... For her sake, mine, and Bustane's, I had to find a way to rescue her or risk everything. I couldn't lose hope, not when so much was at stake. With determination, I took a deep breath and pushed forward through the dense forest. My senses heightened, I focused on spotting any signs of danger as I headed towards the outskirts where I had spotted the Hunters near the fortifications. The forest changed, filled with the scent of humans and machinery, the air heavy with oil and sweat. My muscles tightened, ready for any hidden threats. I hid behind trees and bushes, keeping an eye on the gaps in the undergrowth. Just a short distance away stood the familiar wooden bridges and fence posts from my first escape. This was it Hunters' Castle, and perhaps the place Bianca is still attached to if she hasn't been able to recover. My heart rate sped up as I searched the place with a tiny probe. No street guards were visible on this side, but light spilled from a few dirty windows. Landing quietly in a crouched position, I crept closer, ready to find a way in... when suddenly, a piercing scream tore through the air behind me. Turning around with a loud scream, I saw a terrifying sight: a big creature covered in gray, slimy hair. Its wide mouth had sharp, red teeth, and its angry orange eyes glared at me. "Oh my goodness ," I breathed, struggling to snap my fingers, easily avoiding becoming a monster. "Is that in eternal flame?" The animal completely ignored my words and seemed to clench its fists and prepare to attack. Whenever I reached for any weapon or tool to stop this unexpected attacker, I watched him carefully. Trying to turn the afternoon wild, something strange appeared on the creature's face, making it look scared for a moment, along with its scary breathing. Suddenly, the big creature vanished without a trace... and then there were just two flat feet where it had been crouching, appearing out of nowhere. I looked at the strange mirror, hardly believing what I saw. But soon, it became clear that it was just a person wearing familiar old clothes – clothes I remembered but had forgotten about. One of the hunters. Help me, please! That amazing creature isn't a wild animal; it's not even alive. It's an enemy agent using forbidden technology to become invisible and change its appearance. As the creature, Hunter, I corrected myself, straightened fully to confront me, a mocking grin appeared under the armored hood shielding their face. "Well, let's..." they rasped in a low voice that quickly sent chills down my spine. "What do we have here?" They slowly took a step forward, prompting me to take a few angry steps back. But the threatening person scolded in false alarm. "Oh, little baby...did you really think you could get back to our cave so soon? That we wouldn't be alert enough to see strangers like you crawling around in there?" Another laughed mercilessly. "You're underestimating us, I'm afraid." My jaw tightened as a surge of obedient fury flooded through my veins. "I'm not interested in your use of magic or unholy technology," I spat back at it, baring my teeth and falling into a defensive knee. "I will not allow you to endanger the lives of the people of this region again!" The seemingly confident hunter smiled openly and reached out to grab something from their belt. When their hands returned, they seemed to be holding some kind of high-tech steel rod or cane. I looked at them warily, but refused to back down. "Foolish child," the figure murmured, "You speak of a power you barely begin to understand. We command more than simple magic..." They gripped the wand tightly, making it glow with a bright violet light. I felt a deep sense of unease, every part of me reacting to the sinister energy of the device. "We control the essence of the Life Stream. We can manipulate the ancient powers that give life to unnatural creatures like you. Do you think your brave soldiers can handle that kind of power?" Suddenly, around the first hunter, four more identical hunters appeared out of thin air, encircling me. Like their boss in the center, they were armed with flame weapons and had weird undersides that floated slightly. "Now, tell me, you pitiful creature..." They pointed the pulsing wand at my chest with a sneer, their lips twisting in hidden delight. "Would you like to experience the exquisite torture we have in store for your beloved Alpha King?" Realization hit me like a bucket of cold water. It was these insane Hunters and their dangerous weapons that caused Bustane so much pain, the force that nearly consumed him and fueled my own fear and anger. "Alpha…Bustane…" I groaned through sharp stings, my rage giving me courage. No matter how warped the laws of reality, if this twisted tape was the source of my partner's threat, I would find a way to rip it apart with my teeth and claws. The Leader Hunter laughed aloud, signalling that his four assistants should move forward as they noticed my provoking aggression. With their flaming eyes full of hate, the warriors surrounding them raised their swords and advanced toward me.
