Chapter 2: The Truth He Never Told

400 Words
Camille stared at her phone, her heart pounding so loudly she could hear it in her ears. John: There’s something you need to know about what happened back then. She clenched her jaw. Five years. Five years of silence. Five years of trying to forget him. And now he wanted to talk about the past? Camille: I don’t think there’s anything left to say, John. A few seconds passed. John: Please, Camille. Just hear me out. She laughed bitterly. Hear him out? Where had that request been when she was crying herself to sleep after receiving that devastating message? Where had it been when she desperately needed answers? Camille: You had your chance five years ago. The typing indicator appeared and disappeared several times. Finally, a message arrived. John: You never gave me a chance to explain. Camille froze. Her fingers tightened around her phone. The memory she hated most came rushing back. A woman had messaged her from an unknown account. The woman had sent photos of a baby. Photos of John holding the child. Then came the message that shattered Camille’s world. “John is the father of my baby. He belongs with us now.” Camille remembered crying the entire night. She remembered calling John over and over again. But his phone had been unreachable. After days of waiting and suffering, she made the hardest decision of her life. She ended their relationship. Changed her number. And disappeared. Now, five years later, he was telling her she never gave him a chance? Camille: What explanation could possibly change anything? The reply came immediately. John: Because that child isn’t mine. Camille’s breath caught. Her eyes widened. For a moment, she thought she had read it wrong. Camille: What? John: I swear to you, Camille. The child was never mine. Her heart began to race. No. That wasn’t possible. If it wasn’t his child, then why did that woman send those pictures? Why did she claim John was the father? And why had John never contacted her afterward? As if reading her thoughts, another message appeared. John: I spent years looking for you because I needed to tell you the truth. Camille stared at the screen. For the first time in five years, doubt crept into her heart. What if she had been wrong? And what if the love she buried years ago had been built on a lie?
