Chapter Four Late that afternoon Marion visited Daniel’s home again. She wore her good green cote but no hood. She fancied the bright spring sun would catch in her hair. The garden lay empty, so Marion knocked. As she straightened her clothes and licked her lips, a chair scraped inside. Daniel opened the door and looked down at her, his face suggesting she was the last visitor he expected. “Mistress Marion,” he said. He did not move to give her room to enter. “Good day to you Master Daniel. I have come to apologise for my behaviour yesterday. I was rude and offensive. You did not deserve such treatment.” He said nothing but looked uncomfortable. Marion held up a fine white loaf of bread. “I paid Tom to bake this, from the dough I made this morning.” She smiled as warmly as she could.
