The First Betrayal

The royal gala looked exactly the same, this scared her the most. The gold golden chandeliers hanging above the ballroom looked exactly the same, the musicians playing the same beautiful melody, the nobles laughing as if the night was nothing more than another night of celebration
They really had no idea. They didn't know that amidst this beautiful night, there was a tragedy waiting to happen, but Selene knew because she had already lived it before
Tonight was the night Luna Helena would be poisoned with wine
Tonight was the night that Selene's life would start falling apart, tonight was the night she would lose every single thing, but not again, not this time, she tightened her grip on her dress and walked into the ballroom
The old Selene would have entered this room searching for one person, Brandon. She would have kept wondering if he noticed her, she would have hoped he would look at her and smile, she would have believed that no matter what happened, he would be there for her
The woman who loved blindly has died, and now the woman standing here remembered exactly how death was
"Selene," a voice said as her heart stopped. She knew that voice, slowly she turned around, and it was Brandon. For a moment, everywhere was strangely quiet, because her heart remembered him even before her mind could stop it
The man who held her when she cried, the man who promised he would never ever leave her no matter what. The man whose silence hurt more than the blade that had ended her life, he hasn't changed at all, he looked exactly the same, and that was the curious thing about betrayal
The person who always betrays you doesn't always look like a monster, sometimes they look like the person you trusted the most
"You look different" Brandon said calmly
She tried to force herself to look away from the memories. He looked at her like she was a book he was studying.
"You changed overnight," he said. If only he knew that she had died. If only he knew she had spent her final moments, wondering why the person she loved didn't save her or at least tried to
"What do you want, Brandon?" she said as she noticed a flicker of sadness filled his face
"I wanted us to talk," he said. Those words? In her first life, those words came before an excuse, before a betrayer, and before another piece of her heart was broken
"We have nothing to talk about" she said as she noticed his expression change immediately
For a second, she saw something she wasn't prepared for. Regret, but regardless, she pushed it
Regret didn't bring her back when she was dying, before he could say anything else, the royal bell rang. Selene looked at the time 10:00pm, seven minutes away.
She turned away, not because she was afraid of seeing him, but because tonight... was the night, and she had to be fast
Luna lifted the glass to her mouth, Selene's entire body started shaking
Luna was already putting the glass near her lips. Selene ran with every strength in her, she had taken one step, more steps, she was going to make it, she was going to save her, then suddenly...
A figure moved past her. A hand hit the glasses and it shattered onto the floor, the sound echoed through the ballroom as the wine spilled all over the marble floor
For one terrifying second, nothing happened. Then there was smoke coming out from the liquid. A scream came from someone in the crowd: "Poison!"
She stared at the broken glass. She didn''t stop it, but someone else did
Her eyes slowly moved towards the person standing beside Luna. He stopped towards her, and that moment, both of their eyes met and something inside her broke
"I don't know you" she said "No" he said with a smirk
"You don't remember" he said, his eyes still on her
"Remember what?" she asked. He reached into his coat, then he pulled out a necklace. It was her necklace. The one she wore the night she died, the one she was buried with. She felt cold all over her
"Where did you get that?" she asked as his fingers crossed around it. "You gave it to me," he said.
She shook her head. "No, that's not possible. I have never met you" she said. The sadness in his eyes became very deep. "That's because you forgot" he said
Her heartbeat became louder. "Forgot what?" she asked, as he stepped closer. "The night you died" He said as her stomach began to scrumble
Everyone who knew about her death was supposed to be an enemy, they were supposed to be the people who betrayed her, who wanted her gone, but this man, he looked like someone who had genuinely lost her
"Who are you?" she asked. And for a moment, he said nothing, then he answered: "Andrea Vale"
Immediately he said that her blood froze. Andrea Vale? The man who was executed three years before her death, the man who was accused of a crime he never confessed to, the man who was supposed to be dead
She looked at him, confused. "You are dead," she said. She saw a sense of fear on his lips. "So are you" he replied
For a moment she couldn't breathe, suddenly she understood, she wasn't the only person who had been given a second chance, someone else remembered the past, someone else remembered what happened the night she died, and someone else knew the truth she was yet to discover
Andrea leaned closer. "Selene" he said as his voice became a whisper. "You came back to change your fate," he said.
"But you don't know who wrote it"
A cold fear settled in her chest. "That night you died wasn't the end of your story" he said as he took a pause
"It was the beginning of the war"
