Hallways & Heartbeats Chapter 10 — “The Secret Challenge” By Thursday morning Ridgeway High was buzzing again. Posters appeared overnight announcing The Hawk Hunt, a week-long scavenger game designed by the Student Council to boost school spirit. Each day, clues would be hidden around campus. Teams who found them all could win free tickets to the Homecoming Dance and gift cards to the local café. Amy smiled at the flyer taped to her locker. “This looks fun,” she murmured. Jayden appeared behind her, twirling his car keys. “Fun? It’s destiny. You and me, clue-hunting champions.” Amy laughed. “You already sound like you’re planning a heist.” “I prefer ‘heroic mission,’” Jayden said with a mock bow. “Besides, you’ll need me. I’m the only one who knows all the secret hiding places.” They signed up as a team and got their first clue at lunch. It read: Where books sleep but whispers wake. “Library,” Amy said instantly. Jayden grinned. “Knew you’d get it.” They darted through the halls like spies. The library was mostly empty except for a few students and Mrs. Porter, the librarian, who eyed them suspiciously as they wove between the stacks. Jayden crouched near the old globe by the reference section and plucked a small envelope taped underneath. “Got it,” he whispered triumphantly. Amy giggled, adrenaline buzzing in her veins. “You’re ridiculous.” “And yet,” Jayden said, tucking the envelope into her hand, “you’re smiling.” The clue inside sent them to the trophy case in the gym. They sneaked in between classes, dodging a group of basketball players. Jayden gave Amy a boost so she could reach the top shelf, where another envelope was wedged behind an old plaque. Their laughter echoed in the empty gym. Jayden steadied her as she climbed down, hands firm on her waist. The warmth of his touch made her heart skip. “I think we make a good team,” Amy said softly. Jayden met her eyes, the playfulness fading into something gentler. “We always have.” Just then Madison stormed in, flanked by two friends. “Of course you’re here,” she drawled. “Trying to cheat your way to the prize?” Amy rolled her eyes. “We’re just playing like everyone else.” Madison smirked. “We’ll see. Some of us actually know how to win without…distractions.” Jayden’s arm slipped protectively around Amy’s shoulders. “Funny, Maddie, because you always look distracted when you lose.” Madison’s cheeks flushed. “We’ll beat you. Watch.” She spun on her heel and stalked off. Amy exhaled. “She’s not going to make this easy.” Jayden squeezed her shoulder. “Let her try. We’ll still win.” By the end of the day, Amy and Jayden had collected four of the five clues, laughter and whispered strategizing weaving them even closer together. The hunt felt less like a game and more like their own adventure, a secret world where only they existed. As they left the building under the dusky sky, Jayden pulled her close. “Win or lose, this has been the best week I’ve had in a long time,” he said quietly. Amy smiled up at him. “Me too.” hum And in that moment, surrounded by the of evening crickets and the fading shouts of students in the parking lot, Amy felt it again — the certainty that no gossip, no rival team, no Madison could shake what she had with Jayden. Her heart was his. Completely.
