Hallways & Heartbeats
Chapter 6 — “Study Session Sparks”
After school, the library hummed with the low murmur of students finishing homework or quietly cramming for exams. Amy found a corner table near the windows and set down her bag, pulling out her notebook and textbooks. Today, she had a mandatory study session with Ethan for their history project, and while she tried not to think about it, a small part of her felt… nervous.
“Hey,” Ethan greeted as he arrived, carrying his backpack neatly over one shoulder. He gave her a quick, polite smile before setting down his materials. “Ready to get started?”
Amy nodded. “Yeah…ready.”
Ethan opened his laptop and organized his notes with meticulous precision. He had always impressed her with his focus and discipline, but today, sitting across from him, she felt the weight of the scholarship pressure more than ever.
“I think if we split the research sections, we can finish half today,” Ethan suggested, pointing to a chart he’d sketched out. “I’ll take the political changes, you handle the cultural aspects. Then we’ll meet again tomorrow for analysis and writing.”
Amy scribbled notes, trying to match his energy. “Got it. Political—Ethan. Cultural—Amy. Sounds simple enough.”
As they worked, the quiet library atmosphere was punctuated only by the scratching of pencils, the occasional whisper of a page turning, and the soft tapping of keys. Amy found herself stealing glances at Ethan — the way he concentrated, lips slightly pursed, hair falling neatly over his forehead. She shook her head, trying to focus on her research.
Unbeknownst to her, Jayden had been watching from the hall outside the library. He had intended to prank a friend in detention, but when he saw Amy sitting with Ethan, head bent over her notebook, a sharp pang of jealousy hit him. His usual grin faltered, replaced with a scowl.
“Figures,” he muttered under his breath. “Perfect Ethan, helping my girl…of course.”
Jayden leaned against the wall, arms crossed, pretending to check his phone while watching the pair. Every small laugh Amy shared, every approving nod from Ethan, made his chest tighten. It was irrational, but he couldn’t help it.
Meanwhile, inside the library, Amy felt the first sparks of frustration. Ethan, despite being kind and patient, had a way of correcting her subtly, reminding her of deadlines and precision. She appreciated his help, but part of her missed the lightness she felt with Jayden — the jokes, the chaos, the sense that mistakes were allowed.
“You’re overthinking this,” Ethan said, glancing at her work. “Just summarize the points and move on. You don’t need to get every detail perfect.”
Amy forced a small smile. “Thanks…guess I just want it to be good.”
Ethan nodded, satisfied. “It will be. You’re smart — you just need to trust yourself.”
Across the hall, Jayden’s grip tightened on his phone. He had no idea what she was thinking, but seeing her with Ethan made him feel… expendable. He pushed off the wall and started pacing quietly, thinking of a way to get her attention, to remind her that he existed outside this perfect, disciplined bubble.
After a while, Amy and Ethan finished the bulk of their work. Ethan leaned back in his chair and stretched. “I think we’re good for today. Same time tomorrow?”
Amy nodded. “Yeah, sounds good.”
Just as they packed up their things, a soft voice startled them from the other side of the table.
“Hey, Amy!”
Jayden had slipped into the library quietly, leaning casually against a nearby bookshelf. He held a small stack of sticky notes and a pen. “Thought you might need some…extra help.”
Amy blinked at him. “Jayden? What are you doing here?”
“I thought you could use a break from Mr. Perfect over there,” he said with a grin, tossing a sticky note onto her notebook. “Consider it moral support.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly, not hostile, but alert. “Moral support?”
Jayden shrugged. “Library rules: everyone deserves a cheerleader.”
Amy laughed nervously, caught between the two boys. She felt warm from the attention, confused by the tension in Ethan’s expression, and secretly thrilled by Jayden’s mischievous arrival.
Jayden leaned closer to Amy and whispered, just loud enough for her to hear, “Don’t let him make you forget how fun life can be.”
Amy’s heart skipped a beat. She wanted to answer, but Ethan cleared his throat and said, “We should head out before the library closes.”
Jayden straightened, pretending to grab his own things. “Of course, Mr. Perfect. Don’t want to interrupt your…uh, perfect study session.”
As Amy walked out with Ethan, she couldn’t shake the flicker of frustration and excitement that lingered from Jayden’s words. Her heart was pulling in two directions, and she realized just how complicated her feelings had become.
Outside the library, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the courtyard. Ethan spoke about tomorrow’s schedule, assignments, and deadlines. Amy nodded, but her mind wandered to Jayden — his teasing grin, the way he made her laugh, the little spark of unpredictability he brought to her life.
She realized, with a mix of dread and thrill, that this love triangle was only going to get messier. And somehow, she had a feeling that Jayden wasn’t going to let her forget it.
