Chapter 2: The Broken Promises

847 Words
The rain had stopped. But the storm inside Amara had only just begun. She stood motionless under the flickering streetlight, her fingers wrapped tightly around the sealed envelope. The three men had disappeared into the darkness after Ethan, leaving behind only silence and the distant rumble of thunder. "Who was he?" she whispered. "And why did he trust a complete stranger?" She slipped the envelope into her handbag and hurried toward the bus stop. Every passing vehicle made her heart race. She could not explain it, but she felt as though invisible eyes were watching her. The government hospital smelled of antiseptic and despair. Mrs. Grace Eze lay weakly on the narrow hospital bed, her once radiant face now pale from months of illness. When Amara entered, she forced a smile. "My brave daughter... how was the interview?" Amara swallowed the lump in her throat. "It went well, Mama." It was a lie. A gentle lie. She could not bring herself to tell her sick mother that she had been rejected again. Grace reached for her daughter's hand. "Don't lose hope. Sometimes God delays a blessing because He is preparing something greater." Amara smiled through tears. "I hope you're right." At that moment, a nurse walked in with a clipboard. "Miss Eze..." "Yes?" "The hospital management says the outstanding bill must be settled within forty-eight hours. Otherwise..." She hesitated. "...your mother may have to be discharged." The words struck Amara like a hammer. Discharged? Where would she take her mother? Their rented room had no electricity, no running water, and barely enough space for two people. She thanked the nurse quietly, but inside she felt her world collapsing. Across the city, Ethan sat alone in a private room inside a secure hotel. His shoulder was bandaged where a bullet had grazed him during the chase. His lifelong friend and lawyer, Daniel Obi, paced nervously. "Ethan, this has gone too far. They tried to kill you." "They're afraid." "Afraid of what?" Ethan looked out the window. "The truth." Daniel lowered his voice. "Do you still have the evidence?" Ethan's eyes darkened. "No." Daniel froze. "What do you mean 'No'?" "I gave it to someone." "You what?" "She was the only person they wouldn't suspect." Daniel stared at him in disbelief. "You trusted a stranger?" "I trusted her eyes." Daniel sighed. "Eyes can deceive." Ethan shook his head. "Not hers." Many years earlier... A teenage Ethan stood beside his father, Chief Michael Okafor, during the inauguration of a community school. His father smiled proudly. "Son, wealth is meaningless if it cannot wipe someone's tears." Those words stayed with Ethan. But only a year later, tragedy struck. Chief Michael died in what police described as a "car accident." The case was closed within days. Everyone accepted the verdict. Everyone... Except Ethan. As he grew older, he discovered inconsistencies in the investigation. Missing files. Witnesses who vanished. Business partners who suddenly became richer. He began digging quietly. The deeper he searched, the more dangerous the truth became. His father's death had not been an accident. It had been murder. And the people responsible were among the most powerful figures in the country. Back at the hospital, Amara finally opened the envelope. Inside were a flash drive... ...a handwritten note... ...and a photograph. The photograph showed four smiling men standing beside Chief Michael Okafor. One of them had a large scar running across his left cheek. Amara gasped. She recognized him instantly. He was Chief Victor Dike, the influential businessman who had promised to sponsor her university education years ago. Instead... He had demanded that she become his secret mistress. When she refused, he laughed. "No one rejects me and succeeds." Within weeks, her scholarship disappeared. Every opportunity she pursued mysteriously slipped away. For five painful years, she had believed it was bad luck. Now she wasn't so sure. Her trembling hands unfolded the handwritten note. It read: "If anything happens to me, this flash drive must reach journalist Rebecca Lawson. Trust no one—not the police, not politicians, not even people who claim to be my friends. The truth inside this drive has already cost lives. Please... don't let it die with me." — Ethan Okafor Amara's heartbeat quickened. She suddenly understood. This was no ordinary envelope. It was evidence. Evidence powerful enough to make men chase a stranger through a storm. At that very moment... A black SUV pulled quietly to a stop outside the hospital. Three men stepped out. One of them had a long scar across his left cheek. Chief Victor Dike. He looked toward the hospital entrance and smiled coldly. "I know she's here." Amara looked through the window and froze. Their eyes met. For one terrifying second. He pointed directly at her. "There she is." End of Chapter Two Coming Up in Chapter Three – Love That Came Too Late As Amara flees with the evidence, Ethan races against time to save her. Their paths cross again, but every step toward each other draws them deeper into a deadly conspiracy that could cost them everything.
