Chapter 4: The Secret Latter

868 Words
The pounding on the chapel doors grew louder. Bang! Bang! Bang! "Ethan Okafor!" a commanding voice shouted. "Open the door immediately!" Father Matthew looked through a narrow window. His face turned pale. "There are too many of them." Police vehicles surrounded the chapel. But Ethan noticed something strange. "They're not behaving like trained officers." Some of the men wore police uniforms, yet they carried themselves like hired thugs. Victor Dike had done exactly what Ethan feared. He had bought the law. Father Matthew hurried toward the altar. "Follow me." He pushed aside an old wooden cross, revealing a narrow stone staircase leading underground. Amara gasped. "A tunnel?" "It was built during the civil war," Father Matthew explained. "Many families escaped through it." The priest handed Ethan an old leather satchel. "I've kept this for many years." Ethan frowned. "What is it?" "It belonged to your father." Before Ethan could ask another question, the chapel doors crashed open upstairs. Heavy footsteps echoed through the building. "Search everywhere!" Father Matthew pointed toward the tunnel. "Go!" Ethan and Amara disappeared into the darkness just as armed men entered the sanctuary. The tunnel stretched beneath the earth for what felt like forever. The air was damp. The silence was broken only by the sound of dripping water. Finally, they emerged behind an abandoned farmhouse several kilometers away. Both of them collapsed onto the grass, exhausted. Only then did Ethan remember the leather satchel. He slowly opened it. Inside were old photographs... A faded Bible... A silver pocket watch... And a sealed envelope. Across the front were handwritten words. "To my son, Ethan. Open only when your life depends on the truth." Ethan's hands trembled. "This is my father's handwriting." He carefully broke the seal. The letter read: My dear son, If you are reading this letter, then I have likely been taken from you. There are men I once trusted more than brothers. We built businesses together. We dreamed of changing this nation. But greed entered their hearts. They began stealing from the poor, laundering money, and using innocent people to hide their crimes. When I refused to join them, they decided I had become their greatest threat. Ethan, never seek revenge. Seek justice. Remember this: hatred destroys the one who carries it. There is one more truth you must know... The greatest betrayal did not come from outside our family. It came from someone who bears our name. Trust carefully. Love wisely. Forgive freely. And never allow wealth to become your master. I believe God will send someone into your life whose honesty will protect you when money cannot. When that day comes... Don't let her go. Your loving father, Michael Okafor Tears streamed down Ethan's face. He had waited twelve years to hear his father's voice again. Even if only through ink on fading paper. Amara quietly wiped away her own tears. "He knew..." Ethan nodded. "He knew they were coming." At that same moment... Inside Victor Dike's mansion... A servant entered nervously. "Sir..." "What is it?" "We searched the chapel." Victor leaned forward. "And?" "There was nothing." Victor's eyes narrowed. "What about Father Matthew?" The servant lowered his head. "He refused to tell us where they went." Victor smiled coldly. "Then perhaps his memory needs encouragement." Hours later... Father Matthew sat alone inside the damaged chapel. The door opened. Victor Dike walked in slowly. "So..." "You helped them escape." Father Matthew looked him straight in the eye. "I helped the truth survive." Victor laughed softly. "You priests never learn." He leaned closer. "Tell me where Ethan is." "I don't know." The lie was convincing. But Victor wasn't interested in truth anymore. He nodded to one of his men. The man struck Father Matthew across the face. Blood stained the floor. Still... The old priest remained silent. Meanwhile... As dawn approached, Ethan and Amara found shelter in an old village guesthouse. Neither of them could sleep. The weight of the letter lingered between them. Finally, Amara spoke. "Your father said someone in your own family betrayed him." Ethan stared into the darkness. "There is only one person I can think of." "Who?" "My uncle..." "Richard Okafor." He had helped raise Ethan after his father's death. He had managed the company. He had always appeared loyal. But suddenly... Certain memories no longer made sense. Missing documents. Strange financial transactions. Conversations that stopped whenever Ethan entered a room. Could it be true? Could the man he called "Uncle" have betrayed his own brother? As Ethan struggled with the question, his phone vibrated. It was an unknown number. He answered cautiously. A frightened voice whispered. "Ethan..." It was Daniel. "They've kidnapped your mother." The line went dead. Ethan sprang to his feet. His face turned ashen. Amara knew immediately. Something terrible had happened. The battle was no longer just about justice. It had become deeply personal. End of Chapter Four Coming Up in Chapter Five – Betrayed by Blood Ethan races to save his mother, but every clue points toward an impossible truth.
