Chapter 5: Betrayal By Blood

1031 Words
The words struck Ethan like a thunderbolt. "They've kidnapped your mother." For a heartbeat, the world stood still. The colour drained from his face. His phone slipped from his trembling fingers and landed on the wooden floor with a dull thud. The room fell into a suffocating silence. Amara stepped towards him, alarm written across her face. "Ethan... what happened?" He struggled to speak. His lips parted, but no words came. At last, in a voice barely above a whisper, he said, "They've taken my mother." The sentence hung in the air like a funeral bell. Fear replaced reason. Grief ignited into fury. --- Without another word, Ethan reached for his jacket and headed for the door. Amara quickly moved in front of him. "Where are you going?" "To get my mother." "Like this?" "I don't have a choice." "You do." His eyes burned with desperation. "Every second I waste could cost her life." "And every reckless step could cost yours." Her calmness cut through his panic. She looked directly into his eyes. "Think, Ethan. Since all this began, every move you've made has been anticipated. Every hiding place has been discovered. Someone is feeding them information." The words struck him harder than he expected. She continued quietly. "Who knew you escaped the chapel?" "Daniel." "Who knew about the flash drive?" "...Daniel." "The letter from your father?" "...Daniel." Silence answered the questions neither of them wanted to ask. Ethan shook his head. "No... Daniel wouldn't betray me." Amara's voice softened. "I pray you're right. But if you're wrong, blind trust could destroy everything your father died to protect." --- Just then, Ethan's phone rang again. Unknown Number. He answered instantly. A distorted voice spoke from the other end. "If you want to see your mother alive... come to the old Riverside Factory." Ethan's heartbeat accelerated. "Let me speak to her." There was a pause. Then came a frightened voice. "Ethan... don't come..." It was his mother. Before she could say another word, the call ended. Ethan clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white. "I'm going." Amara stood beside him. "Then you're not going alone." "They ordered me to come alone." She gave a sad smile. "Since when do criminals care about keeping promises?" For the first time since the nightmare began, Ethan allowed himself to breathe. He nodded. "Let's go." --- The abandoned Riverside Factory looked like a graveyard for forgotten dreams. Rust covered every beam. Broken windows stared into the darkness like empty eyes. The wind whistled through shattered walls, carrying an eerie silence that made every step feel dangerous. Ethan and Amara entered through a side entrance. Every sound echoed. Every shadow seemed alive. Then... A familiar voice emerged from the darkness. "I knew you would come." A man stepped into the pale light. Ethan froze. His heart refused to believe what his eyes had already confirmed. "Uncle Richard..." Richard Okafor looked older than Ethan remembered. His hair had turned grey, but his eyes still carried the same calm expression that had comforted Ethan after his father's funeral. For years, Ethan had loved him like a second father. Now that same face felt unfamiliar. "Where is my mother?" Ethan demanded. "She's alive." "I want to see her." "You will." "Now!" Richard sighed deeply. "I wish things had turned out differently." Ethan's voice trembled. "Did you betray my father?" Richard lowered his head. "He left us no choice." "No choice?" "He wanted to expose everyone." "He wanted justice!" "He wanted to destroy everything we built." Ethan's eyes filled with tears. "No... he wanted to save innocent people." Richard looked away. "Some dreams are too expensive." Ethan stepped closer until they stood face to face. "You sold your own brother." Richard closed his eyes. "I never wanted him dead." "But you watched it happen." Silence. That silence became his confession. The man Ethan had admired all his life had betrayed his own blood. --- Slow, mocking applause echoed through the factory. Chief Victor Dike emerged from the shadows with a cruel smile. "What a touching family reunion." Dozens of armed men surrounded the building. There was nowhere to run. Victor's eyes settled on Amara. "So... this is the young woman who believes honesty can change the world." Amara met his gaze without fear. "Truth always outlives lies." Victor laughed loudly. "Your courage will make your funeral memorable." He turned to Ethan. "You still haven't figured it out, have you?" Ethan stared at him. "Figured out what?" "The person who betrayed you wasn't only your uncle." Victor smiled with chilling satisfaction. "It was Daniel." Ethan felt the words tear through him. "No..." "Oh yes." "He told us where you were." "He told us about the chapel." "He told us about the flash drive." "He even helped us plan tonight." Every sentence shattered another piece of Ethan's heart. The boy who had shared his childhood... The man he had trusted with his life... Had sold him for money. Victor spread his arms triumphantly. "You see, Ethan... enemies are dangerous." "But betrayal..." He smiled wickedly. "...always wears the face of a friend." He raised his hand. "Take them." Armed men advanced. Suddenly— BOOM! A violent explosion ripped through the upper level of the factory. Steel beams crashed to the ground. Concrete shattered. Smoke swallowed the room. Screams erupted from every direction. In the confusion, Amara seized Ethan's hand. "Run!" They sprinted through the collapsing building as bullets ripped into the walls behind them. Richard shouted desperately, "Ethan! Wait!" Ethan looked back. For the first time, he saw genuine remorse in his uncle's eyes. But it was too late. Another deafening explosion shook the factory. Flames burst through the roof, turning the night sky crimson. As Ethan stumbled outside, he looked back at the inferno. Then he heard it. A faint cry. "Ethan..." His blood froze. Through the wall of fire, he caught the silhouette of a woman trapped inside—her hands stretched towards him. It looked exactly like his mother. Without hesitation, Ethan broke free from Amara's grasp and ran straight towards the burning building. "Ethan, no!" The flames roared. The roof began to collapse. And the fire swallowed him whole.
