Chapter 6: Price Of Loyalty

868 Words
"Ethan, no!" Amara's scream was swallowed by the roaring flames. Without a second thought, Ethan charged into the burning factory. The heat struck him like a solid wall. Smoke clawed at his lungs, and burning debris crashed around him. Every instinct screamed at him to turn back, but one thought drowned out every other voice. Mother. "Mother!" he shouted. His voice echoed through the inferno. Then he heard it again. "Ethan..." Weak. Faint. Barely audible. He followed the sound deeper into the collapsing building until he found her. Mrs. Elizabeth Okafor was tied to a steel pillar, unconscious, with thick ropes around her wrists. Flames danced around her as smoke filled the room. "Mother!" He rushed forward and pulled at the ropes with desperate strength, but they refused to give way. A burning beam crashed only a few feet away. The ceiling groaned. The building was dying. With trembling hands, Ethan picked up a jagged piece of metal from the floor and sawed furiously at the ropes. "Please... hold on..." At last, they snapped. He lifted his mother onto his shoulders. She was weak, almost lifeless. Every step towards the exit became a battle against smoke, fire, and collapsing concrete. Just as daylight appeared through the doorway— CRASH! A massive steel beam fell directly in front of them. The exit was blocked. Ethan's heart sank. There was no way through. --- Outside, Amara stood helplessly. The fire brigade had arrived, but the flames had become uncontrollable. "No!" she cried. "They're still inside!" The firefighters held her back. "The building could collapse at any moment." Tears streamed down her face. She folded her hands and whispered through sobs, "Lord... You saved Daniel in the lions' den. You walked with the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace. Please... don't let this fire become Ethan's grave." --- Inside, the smoke thickened. Mrs. Okafor slowly opened her eyes. "Ethan..." He smiled through tears. "I'm here, Mum." She reached up and touched his soot-covered face. "I knew... you'd come." He tried to smile again, but his eyes betrayed his fear. "We're getting out." She looked around. "There is no way." "There has to be." She noticed the panic in her son's eyes. For the first time since he was a little boy, she saw not a billionaire, not a businessman, but simply her frightened son. She gently held his hand. "Listen to me." "No." "You must." "I'm not leaving you." "You have to." Ethan shook his head violently. "I've already lost Dad." "You won't lose me." "I can't." "You must." She smiled weakly. "Some people spend their whole lives protecting their children." She paused. "Today... allow me to protect mine." Before Ethan understood what she meant, she pushed him with all the strength she had left. He stumbled through a narrow opening between two fallen beams that he had not noticed before. "Ethan!" He turned. "Run!" The weakened structure gave way. The opening closed instantly beneath tons of burning steel. "No!" Ethan threw himself against the wreckage. "Mother!" No answer. He clawed at the debris with bleeding hands. "Mother!" Only flames replied. --- Minutes later, firefighters finally dragged Ethan away by force. He struggled wildly. "Let me go!" "My mother is still inside!" Three men could barely restrain him. Then... A firefighter emerged from the smoke carrying a woman. She was unconscious. Barely breathing. Mrs. Elizabeth Okafor. "She's alive!" someone shouted. Ethan fell to his knees. For the first time in many years, he wept openly. Not because he was weak. But because love had stripped away every mask. --- Across the road, hidden inside a black luxury vehicle, Victor Dike watched the rescue unfold. His jaw tightened. "They survived." Richard Okafor stood beside him, his face heavy with guilt. "This has gone too far." Victor turned slowly. "Too far?" "They almost died." "They were supposed to." Richard looked horrified. "You told me Elizabeth would never be harmed." Victor's eyes grew cold. "I told you whatever was necessary to keep you obedient." Realisation hit Richard like lightning. For twenty-five years he had believed he was protecting his family. Instead... He had become a pawn in a far darker game. Victor leaned closer. "If your conscience has finally awakened..." His smile became frightening. "...I'll simply bury it with you." --- Later that night, Ethan sat beside his mother's hospital bed. Machines beeped softly. She remained unconscious but stable. Amara quietly entered the room. Neither spoke. Words felt unnecessary. After several moments, Ethan finally broke the silence. "My father trusted my uncle." She nodded. "I trusted Daniel." Another painful silence. Ethan looked down at his hands. "I don't know who I can trust anymore." Amara gently placed her hand over his. "You can trust the truth." He looked into her eyes. For the first time since this nightmare began, he found something stronger than fear. Hope. Neither of them realised that someone standing outside the hospital door had witnessed the moment. Daniel. His face was filled with jealousy. He clenched his fists. "If I can't have her trust..." He whispered bitterly. "...neither will Ethan." Daniel turned and disappeared into the darkness, already planning a betrayal more devastating than anything that had come before.
