Chapter 8; Tears Behind The Smile

1019 Words
The church that had echoed with songs of celebration only moments earlier was now filled with cries of terror. "Ethan!" Amara dropped to her knees, catching him before his body struck the marble floor. Blood stained her cream-coloured dress. Her trembling hands pressed against the wound on his chest. "No... no... stay with me!" Ethan looked into her tear-filled eyes and forced a faint smile. "I'm... sorry..." "Don't you dare apologise!" she cried. "You're going to live!" His lips moved again, but the words were too weak to hear. Within minutes, the sound of ambulance sirens pierced the air. Paramedics rushed inside, carefully placing Ethan onto a stretcher. As they wheeled him away, Amara refused to let go of his hand. "I'm coming with him." --- The emergency department of St. Gabriel's Specialist Hospital became a scene of frantic activity. Doctors and nurses raced through the corridors. "Blood pressure is dropping!" "Prepare the operating theatre!" "We're losing him!" The doors swung shut, leaving Amara standing outside with blood on her hands and fear in her heart. For the first time since she had met Ethan, she felt utterly powerless. She slid down the wall and buried her face in her hands. Her whispered prayer was simple. "Lord... don't let our story end before it has truly begun." --- Mrs. Elizabeth Okafor arrived at the hospital despite the doctor's advice to remain at home. The moment she saw the bloodstained engagement ring in Amara's palm, tears streamed down her face. "My son..." Amara embraced her tightly. "I'm sorry, Mama." Mrs. Okafor gently lifted Amara's chin. "This isn't your fault." "But if I had never entered his life..." "No." She shook her head firmly. "You didn't bring danger into Ethan's life." "You brought him hope." Those words broke the last wall around Amara's heart. She wept openly. Not because she was weak... But because love had made another person's life more precious than her own. --- Elsewhere, Daniel sat alone inside his apartment. The pistol lay on the table before him. His hands would not stop shaking. The image of Ethan collapsing replayed again and again in his mind. "I never meant to shoot him..." He covered his face. "I was aiming at Amara." The confession sickened him. Whether Ethan or Amara had died, he had crossed a line from which there was no easy return. His phone rang. Victor Dike. Daniel answered reluctantly. "Is it done?" Daniel remained silent. Victor's voice hardened. "Speak." "Ethan was shot." A smile spread across Victor's face. "Excellent." "But he's still alive." The smile disappeared. Victor slammed his fist against the table. "Then finish the job." "I can't." "You can." "No." Victor's tone became icy. "You seem to have forgotten something." He pressed a button. A video appeared on Daniel's phone. Daniel's younger sister sat tied to a chair, tears streaming down her face. Behind her stood two armed men. Daniel's heart nearly stopped. "Leave her out of this!" Victor leaned closer to the camera. "You have twenty-four hours." "If Ethan survives..." "...your sister dies." The call ended. Daniel stared blankly at the screen. For the first time, he realised he had never truly been Victor Dike's partner. He had always been his prisoner. --- Back at the hospital, the surgery had lasted nearly five hours. Every minute felt like an eternity. Finally, the operating theatre doors opened. The lead surgeon stepped outside. Everyone rose to their feet. Doctor Chinedu removed his mask. "The operation was successful." A collective sigh of relief swept through the waiting room. "But..." Every heart froze. "The bullet narrowly missed his heart." "He lost a great deal of blood." "The next forty-eight hours will determine whether he lives." Mrs. Okafor clasped her hands in prayer. Amara closed her eyes and whispered, "Thank You, Lord." --- Later that night, the hospital corridor grew quiet. Most visitors had gone home. Amara remained seated outside Ethan's room. She had not eaten. She had not slept. She simply watched the door, hoping to hear good news. An elderly cleaner approached her. "My daughter..." Amara looked up. "You've been crying all day." She managed a weak smile. "I'm fine." The old woman smiled gently. "No." "You're pretending to be." She handed Amara a small cup of tea. "Sometimes the strongest people smile so others won't see their tears." Those words lingered in Amara's heart. She realised that was exactly what Ethan had done for years. Behind every confident smile... He had carried the pain of losing his father. The burden of protecting his mother. The loneliness of wealth. The betrayal of trusted friends. She whispered softly, "You've carried enough pain alone." "I'll help you carry the rest." --- Just before dawn, a nurse hurried out of Ethan's room. "Miss Amara!" She jumped to her feet. "He's awake." Amara rushed inside. Ethan slowly opened his eyes. The first face he saw was hers. He smiled weakly. "I guess..." "...you said yes." Amara laughed through her tears. "And I'm not changing my answer." She reached for his hand. Before Ethan could speak again, he noticed something on the bedside table. A small brown envelope. "There was no sender," the nurse explained. "It was delivered while you were unconscious." Ethan opened it carefully. Inside was a single photograph. His face turned pale. The picture showed his late father... Standing beside Victor Dike... Richard Okafor... And one more man whose face had been crossed out with black ink. On the back of the photograph, written in red, were chilling words: «"The fourth man is still alive... and he is closer than you think."» At that exact moment, the lights in the hospital room suddenly went out. Darkness swallowed the room. A cold voice echoed from the doorway. "Don't bother looking for me..." "...because I'm already here." End of Chapter Eight Coming Up in Chapter Nine – The Millionaire's Proposal As Ethan struggles to uncover the identity of the mysterious fourth man, an unexpected billionaire enters Amara's life with an irresistible offer. But behind the promise of security lies a dangerous agenda that could tear Ethan and Amara apart forever.
