Chapter 8: The Bomb is a Brick

“A bomb?” Five Mao’s words immediately terrified He Sen, Zhang Yi, and the others. They were at the headquarters of Fengdu Group’s subsidiary, which housed both Chinese and Western restaurants, a five-star hotel, and was located in the second ring of Beijing. Though they weren't familiar with business matters, they all understood that if a hotel got a bomb threat, no one would dare stay there.

“Notify all security personnel to assemble immediately. Hurry!” He Sen’s forehead was dripping with cold sweat. If something really happened to the hotel, it would be disastrous—at best, the hotel’s revenue would drop, at worst, they might have to shut down and lay off employees.

Liu Ershui, Li Tiezhu, and Five Mao rushed outside. At this moment, they were utterly confused, unsure of what to do, so they could only follow He Sen’s orders.

Zhang Yi followed them out of the gym. As they ran out, the hotel lobby was already in chaos. Both guests and staff were scrambling to flee, while bomb disposal officers were trying to maintain order. Outside, at least twenty police cars had arrived, along with police dogs and bomb disposal experts—all arriving at once.

“Who’s the head of security? Who is it?” A few police officers approached, clearly looking for someone, since He Sen and the others were wearing security uniforms.

“Officer, I’m He Sen, the head of security here at Fengdu. I used to be in the military. Please give me your orders!” He Sen didn’t hesitate, stepping forward confidently. This was a critical moment, and as the head of security, he couldn’t afford to mess up.

The police officer, who seemed to be a district chief, shook He Sen’s hand and said, “Alright, let’s not waste time. Organize your men and guide us. We’ll do a floor-by-floor search starting from the top and the bottom. You’re only responsible for leading the way.”

“Got it! Everything will be as you command, sir!” He Sen responded loudly.

Just then, a sound came from the employee elevator, which went straight to the top floor. The elevator door opened, and several women and men escorted the CEO, Xu Jiayun, out.

Yes, they were escorting her out.

“Commercial competition! This is corporate sabotage—despicable, vile, and cowardly!” Xu Jiayun’s face was pale, but not from fear—she was enraged. When the police informed her of the bomb threat, her first thought was that it was a malicious report from competitors trying to cripple her Fengdu Group’s hotels and restaurants, leaving them unable to recover in a short time.

“My dear President Xu, you’re finally down. Quick, go to the police car outside. We’ll handle things here!” The district police chief walked up to Xu Jiayun with a bitter smile on his face.

“Director Long, this is clearly a case of malicious competition. You must help me find out who’s behind this, or I won’t let it go!” Xu Jiayun seemed to know this district chief well, even calling him "Uncle Long," indicating their familiarity.

Director Long nodded solemnly. “Don’t worry, we’re already investigating.”

After hearing Director Long’s reassurance, Xu Jiayun’s expression softened slightly. She nodded at him and said, “Thank you, Uncle Long. This is really infuriating.”

Director Long smiled faintly. “Go on outside. Whether it’s true or false, we have to check it. This place isn’t safe.”

“Alright, I’ll wait outside for the results.” Xu Jiayun turned and walked toward the door.

However, she hadn’t walked far when she saw Zhang Yi at the corner of the staircase. As soon as Zhang Yi saw her looking at him, he immediately turned and began walking upward!

Xu Jiayun’s chest heaved slightly. This Zhang Yi—he hadn’t gone to the hospital? He had completely ignored her words!

“You wait. You’ll regret it!” Xu Jiayun muttered under her breath. She didn’t call out to Zhang Yi because there were too many people around, and this wasn’t the time to get angry with him. She decided to wait until the situation calmed down before dealing with him.

"If you don't go to the hospital, you’ll have to return the money!" Xu Jiayun immediately made her decision. She had given Zhang Yi 10,000 yuan earlier, but that was for a medical checkup. Since he didn’t go, she figured she might as well demand the money back. If she asked him to return it, that might force him to go after all, right?

At this moment, Zhang Yi had no idea about the CEO’s intentions. He took advantage of the chaos and went up to the second floor alone.

As a hotel security guard, it was his responsibility to maintain order and security. Plus, he was a person who repaid kindness. After all, this morning, Xu Jiayun had given him 10,000 yuan, so he felt obligated to help her just this once because of that.

The third and fourth floors were where the most people gathered, especially in the Chinese restaurants, which were the busiest areas.

The fifth floor had a swimming pool, and the sixth floor had a bowling alley. Only from the seventh floor up were there guest rooms.

Zhang Yi thought that if there really was a bomb, it was most likely hidden on the third floor. The third floor was a bustling area with a lot of traffic, making it easier for someone to plant a bomb unnoticed.

By the time he reached the third floor, the place was empty, and he walked straight into the restaurant lobby. He expanded his mind, covering a 15-meter radius around him.

Hmm, what’s that? As soon as he activated his mind, he immediately saw a canvas tote bag under one of the tables. Inside the bag, there was something resembling a bomb, tightly bound!

This is it! Zhang Yi took a deep breath and focused his mind to probe deeper into the bag.

Damn it, it’s a brick! Zhang Yi cursed loudly, then quickly walked to the table and crouched down to pick up the canvas bag.

Wait, no, no, this isn’t right! He suddenly realized that if he picked up the bag, it would cause problems. The police would likely examine the scene for fingerprints, and his actions would destroy the evidence. So he immediately took out his phone and called He Sen: "Captain, I found something suspicious in the third-floor restaurant. You should send the police to check it out."

Zhang Yi quickly ended the call and lit a cigarette.

Less than a minute later, bomb disposal officers and experts arrived on the third floor. When they saw a small security guard sitting in the western restaurant smoking, they were almost shocked to death.

This little guard has guts! They thought. What if the bomb exploded right now? His life would be in danger!

"Don’t move… Where is the suspicious object?" Two officers in thick bomb disposal suits walked in. Zhang Yi couldn’t even see their faces—these were real bomb disposal experts.

"It’s right here. There’s something in the bag that looks like a bomb," Zhang Yi said with a silly smile.

"You… get out of here, quickly." The two bomb disposal experts immediately knelt down carefully. Zhang Yi opened his mouth to tell them it was just a brick, but then thought better of it. If he said anything, it might cause trouble.

However, what he didn’t expect was that even though he didn’t tell them about the brick, he still got into trouble. After he left the restaurant, the two officers asked him to follow them, and he could see the suspicion in their eyes.
