Chapter 3: Electrocuted

Zhang Yi was an electrician. Before he came to Beijing to send his sister off to school, he had worked as a plumber and electrician in his hometown county. This was a skilled job, paid well, and was relatively easy. In today's world, having a trade is more valuable than being a university graduate.

A month ago, he had spent a few days at the job market, attending interviews with several companies. However, he was only told to wait for a response, but none of the companies hired him. Although he was an electrician, he didn't have an electrician's certificate, and without it, he couldn't be employed.

Then, by accident, he was hired by Fengdu Group.

Logically, not just anyone could be a security guard. Usually, security guards were recruited from among veterans. Zhang Yi, however, had never been in the military. But fortunately, he was tall and strong, had practiced martial arts, and had even won awards. When he presented his award certificates at the interview, the HR staff immediately passed him.

After joining the company, there were several forms to fill out, including a section about other skills. Zhang Yi listed "electrician" and "driving" as his skills. The HR supervisor remembered him, so when the company’s electrician was absent due to a leave, the HR department thought of Zhang Yi.

Soon, Zhang Yi and He Sen, the head of the security department, entered the elevator and headed up to the 28th floor without exchanging any words. At the elevator, they were met by the secretary of General Manager Xu.

The secretary was a young woman. Zhang Yi had only been at the company for a short time, but he had seen her a few times. Her surname was Dong, so everyone called her "Secretary Dong" or "Dong Da Mi."

"General Manager Xu is in a bad mood, so He Section Chief, you should wait outside. Zhang Yi, go in and immediately check and repair the office’s electrical system. This is the second time this has happened. Last time, Engineer Shi said he had fixed it, but it broke down again in just a few days. The HR department has already notified Engineer Shi that he is fired. If you can fix this properly, you may take his position." Secretary Dong spoke in a mechanical tone, without showing much enthusiasm, but she was being cautious. Despite being a secretary, the general manager was not someone easy to deal with.

Zhang Yi had never seen General Manager Xu. Though he had been at the company for a month, most of the time, he was guarding the lobby or working in the outdoor parking lot. General Manager Xu usually took the elevator from the underground parking garage, so up until now, Zhang Yi had never seen her.

Indeed, in the eyes of many people, General Manager Xu was a legend. Zhang Yi had heard other security guards gossiping about her, calling her the "Cold-Faced Goddess" or "Ice Queen," or sometimes "The Tiger."

Whenever people spoke of General Manager Xu, they often said, "Don’t let the tiger see, hear, or know."

The tiger was the queen, the queen of Fengdu.

Secretary Dong gently pushed open the office door, and Zhang Yi, holding pliers and a screwdriver, quickly glanced inside.

There were two people standing in front of a desk, their heads lowered, while a woman’s voice could be heard scolding them.

"Fire him immediately. His skills are a problem. The company doesn’t keep useless people. And what’s going on with your HR department? Didn’t I tell you the company needs two electricians? How come there’s still only one? Your HR department’s bonus for this month is canceled!" The stern criticism made Zhang Yi grin. The tiger was truly fierce—when the tiger roars, everyone can only bow their heads.

"Xu, the young security guard Zhang Yi is here. His resume says he knows how to install water and electricity." Secretary Dong whispered as she stood at the door.

"Alright, let him take a look and see where the problem is. But be careful, you all leave now, and immediately recruit another electrician. Plumbing and electrical work is a top priority for our hotel, we cannot afford any mistakes!" Xu’s tone seemed a bit softer.

"Yes." The two HR department heads nodded and quickly left.

At this point, Zhang Yi had already been led by Secretary Dong to the wall near the desk, where the power supply connected to the computer was located.

"Is there still power in the room? Are the other outlets working?" As Zhang Yi began to disassemble the power supply, he quietly asked.

"The lights are still on. Apart from this power supply and the bedroom outlets, everything else is fine," Xu’s voice came from behind him, cold and low.

"Oh, just a minor issue, it’ll be fixed soon. But this power socket is of poor quality, and the previous connection was not secure. It’s quite dangerous and could easily start a fire. If all the hotel rooms have these types of sockets, I suggest replacing them immediately. Also, this socket must be replaced with a new one," Zhang Yi said as he removed the burned-out socket, noticing that the hot wire had not made a proper connection, causing it to melt and deform.

"What's your name again? Look up and let me see." Suddenly, as Zhang Yi was working with the wires, Xu spoke, her words seemingly out of the blue, even catching Secretary Dong off guard.

"My name is Zhang... uh..." Zhang Yi turned around, and then he saw a familiar face.

"Ah, it’s really you!" Xu almost jumped up in disbelief, her eyes filled with surprise and joy.

When Zhang Yi realized that the beautiful woman was the one he had teased at the spicy hot pot restaurant, his hands trembled. Today had been unlucky enough already—how could he run into this beautiful woman, who was also his boss? Zhang Yi felt like he was about to explode, and his smile was more painful than a cry as he tried to greet her.

However, just then, perhaps by accident, he touched the live wire, and suddenly, his whole body went numb. His body started to convulse uncontrollably.

"Ah..." The two women screamed in panic as Zhang Yi’s body jerked and twitched as if he had been electrocuted. His hair began to singe, and smoke rose from his scalp...

"Crack—" After a few seconds, with his body jerking and the two women screaming, a loud crack was heard as Zhang Yi’s hand finally detached from the power supply. He fell to the ground, unconscious.

"Call an ambulance..." The beautiful boss screamed.

"He Section Chief, He Section Chief..." Secretary Dong was so frightened that she ran out in a panic.

At this moment, Zhang Yi felt his consciousness leaving his body. He saw his motionless body on the ground, his hair burned, and he saw the beautiful boss covering her face, shouting. He also saw the head of security, He Sen, rushing in.

"s**t, am I... am I really going to die?" Zhang Yi was suddenly filled with an overwhelming sense of fear.
