NO WAY OUT

The compound fell silent. Even the rain seemed to pause. Ryder stepped out of the clubhouse, his boots crunching across the gravel. The members of Iron Haven spread out behind him, each taking their position without a word. Some carried baseball bats, others chains, while a few discreetly rested their hands near concealed weapons. They weren't looking for a fight—but they were ready for one. Beyond the gates, five black SUVs idled with their headlights blazing through the darkness. The man standing in front of them lowered his sunglasses and smiled. "Long time no see, Ryder." Ryder's expression didn't change, but his shoulders stiffened. "Damien Cross." The name rippled through the bikers behind him. Several exchanged uneasy glances. Ava watched from the clubhouse window. She had never seen Ryder look at someone with such cold hatred. "You know him?" Claire asked quietly. Ava shook her head. "No." Claire folded her arms. "Then you're about to witness history." Outside, Damien spread his hands. "I've been looking for you." "You should've stayed lost," Ryder replied. Damien laughed. "Still the same. Always protecting people who don't belong in your world." His eyes shifted toward the clubhouse. "Hand over the girl." "No." "I wasn't asking." Ryder took another step forward. "And I wasn't negotiating." For a moment, neither man moved. The tension was so thick that even the wind seemed to hold its breath. Then Damien sighed dramatically. "You've always had a hero complex." Ryder ignored the remark. "What does Victor Bennett want with her?" Damien's smile faded. "That's above my pay grade." "So you're just his messenger now?" A flicker of anger crossed Damien's face. "Careful." "No," Ryder said calmly. "You be careful." Behind Ryder, Samuel quietly signaled the guards to lock every entrance to the compound. The heavy steel gates clicked shut. Damien noticed. "So that's your answer?" "It's the only answer you're getting." Damien turned toward one of his men. "Bring it." The man opened the back of an SUV and pulled out a black briefcase. He carried it to Damien, who set it on the hood of the vehicle and opened it. Stacks of cash. More money than Ava had ever seen in one place. "Five million dollars," Damien called out. "Take it." "Give us the girl." A murmur spread through Iron Haven. Damien smiled. "Enough to rebuild this place twice over." Ryder didn't even look at the money. "You came all this way..." He slipped his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket. "...to insult me?" Damien's smile disappeared. "I was hoping you'd be reasonable." "I am." Ryder's voice was steady. "My answer is still no." Ava's heart pounded. She couldn't understand it. Ryder barely knew her. He had no reason to risk his club, his people, or his life. Yet he refused to sell her out. Why? Just then, Claire gently touched Ava's shoulder. "You should know something." "What?" "When Ryder gives someone his word..." Claire smiled faintly. "...he'd rather die than break it." Ava looked back through the window. For the first time since her nightmare began... She believed she might not be alone anymore. --- A cold breeze swept through the compound, carrying the scent of rain and gasoline. Damien slowly closed the briefcase with a snap. "So, you've chosen her over your club." Ryder remained still. "I chose what's right." Damien chuckled. "That's funny. I remember another time you chose what was right." His voice grew quieter. "How did that work out for your brother?" The laughter around the compound died instantly. Ava noticed Ryder's jaw tighten. Samuel's face darkened. Even Mason lowered his eyes. Claire whispered, "Don't..." But Damien continued. "Lucas believed people deserved saving too. He trusted the wrong people, and where did that leave him?" Ryder took one slow step forward. "Don't say his name." "Why not?" Damien asked with a mocking smile. "He's dead. Everyone here knows it." The muscles in Ryder's hands tensed into fists. Ava could feel the pain radiating from him. There was more to this story than anyone had told her. Damien tilted his head. "Victor Bennett sends his regards." For the first time that night, Ryder's calm mask cracked. "You work for the man who murdered my brother?" Damien shrugged. "I work for the man who pays me." A heavy silence followed. Then Ryder spoke, his voice low and dangerous. "Leave." Damien laughed. "I don't think I will." He raised one hand. Immediately, the doors of every SUV flew open. More than twenty armed men stepped out. Some carried rifles. Others held shotguns. Ava's breath caught in her throat. Iron Haven's members didn't back away. Instead, they formed a line beside Ryder. Mason spun a wrench in his hand with a grin. "Looks like we're outnumbered again." Samuel cracked his knuckles. "Just like old times." Claire sighed dramatically. "I really hate stitching bullet wounds." Despite the danger, a few bikers laughed. Ava stared at them in disbelief. They weren't fearless. They simply refused to let fear control them. Damien pointed toward the clubhouse. "Last chance." "Hand over Ava." "No," Ryder answered. "I won't ask again." "You already did." Damien's smile vanished. "Fine." He lowered his hand. "Take her." The armed men charged toward the gates. At that exact moment, a deafening siren echoed through the compound. Floodlights blazed to life. Steel barriers rose from the ground behind the gates, sealing the entrance completely. One of the attackers slammed into the reinforced barrier with a curse. Samuel smirked. "Welcome to Iron Haven." Gunfire erupted. Bullets struck the steel gates in a shower of sparks. Club members scattered behind cover. Ava dropped to the floor as Claire pulled her away from the window. "Stay down!" Claire shouted. Outside, Ryder stood perfectly still. He reached beneath his leather vest. Instead of drawing a gun... He pulled out a small radio. His voice was calm. "Phase One." Seconds later, the sound of dozens of motorcycle engines thundered through the night. Ava looked up. From every road leading into Iron Haven, motorcycles appeared. One after another. Then another. And another. Within moments, more than fifty bikers surrounded the compound. Damien's confident smile slowly disappeared. Ryder slipped the radio back into his pocket. "You came with an army." He looked around at the arriving riders. "So did I." Damien took an uneasy step backward. For the first time... He realized he had walked into Ryder Kane's territory. And Iron Haven never abandoned its own. --- Just as Damien reached for his phone, it rang first. He answered. His confident expression disappeared. "What?" A long silence. Then he looked up at Ryder with genuine shock. "The flash drive..." He swallowed hard. "...isn't the only evidence."
