Luke folded the eviction notice and tucked it away in his pocket. He wasn’t going to let Vanessa see it. She has done so much already and he decided this time, it was something he should take care of.
“Who was at the door?” Vanessa rolled over, burying her whole body into his chest, voice laced with sleepiness. Luke pulls her close and covers them with a blanket. His grip was tight, like he was afraid of loosing her but also gentle as not to hurt her. He sniffed the scent of her ruffled hair which he was already used to and rested his chin on her head, patting her gently. “It’s nobody. Go back to sleep baby,” his voice low, almost inaudible.
Vanessa stirred lightly beneath him, her lips slightly open. Luke looked at her, he could see the exhaustion of working double shifts weighing on her, gently he caressed her cheeks with his thumb. She was too young for that kind of stress. Suddenly he blames himself for that being capable enough to provide for the woman he loves so much, but her words came to his mind.. “They lost, not you. Anyone in their right senses would love to work with you.” She would say while staring deeply into his eyes as if it bore answers to her unanswered questions about life.
He kissed her forehead lightly as he continued watching her sleep, “that’s my baby,” voice barely over a whisper and eyes filled with unshared affection.
“Lasagna in the fridge, the milk is fresh and I made your favorite dessert. I will be back by 8. Love you baby.”
“Wait,” Luke ran towards her. “Aren’t you forgetting something.” He said with a boyish smile on his face.
Vanessa smiled, pulled him by the shirt and crashed their lips together. It was soft and intimate at first but soon escalated as their tongues exchange saliva and their lips hot kisses.
“We will finish this tonight?”
“Definitely.” Luke whimpered as Vanessa gently squeezed his b***r. Their lips met again in one last peck before she hurriedly left. Luke waved at her though she wasn’t seeing him.
“I’m sorry man, just a second.”
“What took you so long. Be knocking fir ages.”
“Shut up and get your ass inside.”
Luke dashed into the room to find his old pair of Adidas right next to the new pair of NB Vanessa bought last week. She said she was going to get a pair for herself that way they can match but she hasn’t since then. He smiled before putting on his Adidas, tucked some worn out clothes into his backpack and headed out.
“We are not going there for some fashion show boy, you are making me look bad.”
“Keep quiet Jamie. Get out let me lock up.”
“How’s Ness?”
“She’s alright.” Luke answered after a pause, a little smirk visible on his lips. After a pause he remembered the chocolate dessert and went back to get some, wrapping it carefully, into a box then his backpack.
“She made those?”
“Yeah.”
“You are one lucky bastard.”
“I know.” A huge smile now evident on his structured face.
“Does she know?”
“She doesn’t . Don’t plan on telling her. Let’s go.”
It was a construction site not too far from home but far enough from the route Vanessa takes home, he will get an earful if she finds out.
Working for eight hours without a break, the cake he carefully wrapped still untouched. He worked tirelessly when he learnt that you get paid according to how much you worked. Why not? The harder he worked, the more money he makes so as to not be sent packing.
With the eviction notice still tucked in his pocket, Luke worked as though his life depends on it, technically it does. By the end of the day, sweat glued to his body, glittering as exhaustion took over. He quickly changed into his casual clothes, tucking the dirty ones into his backpack.
The workers lined up as the supervisor handed payments in cash. He stopped abruptly when he got to Luke and Jamie. “Who are these guys?”
“I don’t know, thought you hired them,” his assistant answered with a shrug.
“This is not how things are done here. This is a big ol’ construction site but things are done in order here boys. You gotta register first before working, the other fellas did it.” The unlit cigarette hanging loosely from his mouth gave him an accent it maybe he already had one.
“We apologize. We weren’t aware. We thought..…” Jamie nudged Luke, eyes pleading for backup, but Luke was not having it. If they don’t get paid, he is definitely knocking teeth down Jamie’s throat.
“It’s alright. Just follow procedures next time.”
“Been watching you man, really worked your ass off. Take it easy though, just imagine all this just to end up dying young huh?”
He laughed at his own joke. Luke kept a stoic expression not really in the mood for his bullshit. He just wanted the money and to get home before Vanessa does.
He gave Luke a 100 dollars and Jamie 60. Luke clutched it tightly, if he could make this a few more times, then he can pay the rent and buy Vanessa the pair of shoes. The picture of her broad smile showcasing her little fangs she always brags about plays in his head leaving him with a shy, tight smile.
“Hey man, what about our daily tip huh?”
“Well I ain’t got any and you can’t blame me for that. Clean your s**t up and head home boy.” He lit the cigarette, got into his rusty truck and drove away.
“Hey, pretty boy, I think you and your homie right there owes us something,” he chuckled, “you have our money and we would like to have it back.” He spat, his Canadian accent prominent. He stared menacingly as the other five lines up behind him.
Luke turned around totally ignoring them, he wore his backpack when a brick hit his head, hard. He crashed to the ground, blood dripping down his chin.
“Luke! Luke…. Answer me! Look what you have done bastards!!”
“Ughh..You are too loud.” Luke groaned as he struggled to see through the blood that was blinding his sight.
“You alright?”
“What time is it?”
“Huh?”
“What time is it Jamie.”
“6-6:30. Why?”
“Vanessa…..”
Luke stood up, half of his face covered with his own blood. With the money held tightly on one hand and a brick on the other, he took long strides forward holding the brick tightly on the other hand, he swung and hit one, hard, right on the head, leaving him on the floor with a lot of blood dripping down his face. A smile of satisfaction visible Luke’s face, he stared at the others, eyes dripping with pure agility, a sadistic smile on his thin lips as he charged at them.
Jamie was surprised at first but instinctively joined in immediately and things got ugly. Luke punched hard, until he saw blood dripping down their faces…Jamie made a mental note not to get in his bad book. But it wasn’t just a fist fight, solid bricks were used, rods too, Jamie scooped the balls of one with a crowbar, God knows where he got em.
Vanessa rushed into the station, eyes searching frantically until they landed on the pair of familiar hands gripping the cell bar. He was locked up. Apparently the local police decided it was a good day to patrol and they met an unspeakable sight.
“Baby, what happened.” Eyes wet with tears that are ready to fall.
“I’m sorry….. I’m sorry V.” Luke caressed her cheeks with his bloody hands.
“I’m here too.” Jamie said waving his hands.
“Shut up Jamie!!” The two yelled causing them to laugh in the midst of chaos.
“This way Ms Hathaway.”
Vanessa followed immediately signing bail papers, apparently she served as a guardian and emergency contact for the two. Although Luke didn’t start the fight, he severely injured someone and has to pay an accumulated fine of 200 dollars. Vanessa paid, she did, with her last penny. She would do that, than have him locked up.
Luke woke up, memories of last night replayed in his mind like a stereo. He was given an earful….
“V…”
“Baby, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to……I mean I wanted to…...”
Vanessa stared at him and he immediately chocked on his words.
“Vanessa…” he held unto her hand when she tried to stand.
“Would you like to go get the towel yourself?..... Now let go.”
“I’m sorry V, please…talk to me.”
Her fierce look suddenly turned soft as she carefully placed a band aid on his forehead blowing little air on it with her mouth.
“What are you sorry for.” She asked, tone calm.
Luke stared at her, speechless, only pouting lightly as he bent his head
“Baby, I don’t care that you got into a fight and that is cause you won. You didn’t let them treat you like trash and let it slide. I know being in jail is nothing to be proud of, but I was. The blood on your hands wasn’t yours, I bet you punched them hard and I don’t care what people say but I love me a strong man. And you are an amazing example.”
Luke was calm and somewhat emotional as tears were visible in his eyes. Vanessa slowly wiped them off and placed soft kisses on them.
“Don’t you dare let that tear fall. A face like yours should be on the f*****g covers. You should really put it to work by the way.”
“Why, I know you won’t let anyone near me.” Luke teased.
“You know me so well. Again, don’t get me wrong nigga, fighting is not a good thing. I don’t even want to get started with why and what you were doing at a construction site but I get it. It isn’t easy staying home all day. But I’m dead serious when I say this, if they had you down and you didn’t beat their ass off, you would have to face me when you get back and I won’t go easy on you.”
Luke chuckled, suddenly feeling light, happy. Though his intentions were not met and he ended up making her spend more than he earned, but he was happy to do something that she could brag about even if it isn’t right.
“I love you baby.”
“I know.” She smiled pulling him into a warm hug.….the rest of the night was, blissful. Memories of her slim body riding on his body played over and over again that he could still remember how it felt. Their breaths on each other, her soft lips on his, the little moans that occasionally escaped her lips and their bodies being tangled up in sweat and dirt.
He took a sip of coffee, his lips curving into a shy smile as he read her sticker note. The doorbell rang jolting him back, he stared at the door from across the room, reality began to settle in, they might be evicted soon. It rang again, this time accompanied with a loud bang on the door. He reluctantly walked to it, but was sure to make the person pay for that loud bang…well, if they are not the evictors. He twisted the knob and threw the door open.
Sitting on his doormat was a box with his name on it in an unreadable hand writing. He took it inside and shut the door behind him. Placed the box which felt somewhat heavy for a mail on the table and tore it open with a knife.
His stomach dropped and he suddenly felt dizzy…
Wrapped neatly in a bubble wrap and still dripping like it was freshly cut from it’s body was a head which Luke recognized the face.
Why not, his Canadian accent was undeniable when he asked for his f*****g tip.
