CHAPTER 2 - TWO LIFELINES

1593 Words
"What - what the hell happened here?" Elvira struggled to sit up on the bed and that was when she noticed her hands were syringed all over. "What the heck is happening here?" She raised her voice a little, having a hard time remembering what had happened a few hours ago. Kristin pulled her into a deep tight hug immediately, stylishly wiping the tears in her eyes away. "What happened?" Elvira repeated, looking around the hospital ward. Her stepmother and daughter were sitting three feet away from her bed like she caught some kind of plaque. That has always been their behavior ever since her mother died giving birth to her brother and her father married Martha in less than a year with the excuse that her baby brother needs a mother figure. "This man brought you here after he found you lying unconsciously in the woods." Kristin pointed to a man standing outside the ward. Elvira recognized him immediately to be the driver that his car miserably ended up faulty in the middle of nowhere. "I should thank him." She sighed, he was still the reason she was alive. What if that wolf had killed her? Talking about the wolf, she wasn't sure if it was a lion she saw or a human. It seemed confusing to her, especially the change of eyes. "The doctor will discharge you tomorrow, you still need to rest." Kristin rubbed Elvira's hands, giving her a basket packed with food and fruits. "No, she should get back to work." Clara, Martha's daughter rolled her eyes while picking her manicured nails. Kristin threw a glare at her, wanting to fire back words but Elvira shook her head as she took an apple from the basket. "You are fine right?" Kristin asked for the third time and Elvira looked at her suspiciously, "Why? I am fine." She replied. "Maybe she's asking because the doctor said you have got only one month to live." Clara made a sympathetic tone laced with mockery. "That's what the doctors said. Why didn't you tell me you had such an ailment? I asked you several times whenever you looked pale, weren't eating, sleeping a little, or lost lots of weight." Kristin burst into tears. Elvira held her friend's hands though she was trembling inside, how soon is she going to die? Just a month? Just a month to live. Just a month to stay with her baby brother. Just a month to work in the hotel, to get her salary. Just a month to fulfill her dreams. "I could have talked to my father to fly you out of the country and treat whatever thing it is! You can't just have one month to live? You can't leave me after one month!" Kristin broke into loud sobs and Elvira pulled her into a hug, consoling both her friend and herself. What plans does she make for a month? It was way too short for her to live. A few months ago, Elvira noticed she started bleeding severely and daily. She gathered enough money and the doctor ran some tests on her, it showed that she was suffering from an ailment they had no idea of which also meant there was no cure. Twice a week, they ran several tests on her, collecting different tables of assumptions just to figure out what type of disease she had to figure out the cure. "This disease was born with you, it has no cure except we perform a surgery on you which is a 50/50 chance for you to live." Her last hope was cut short by the doctor's words which made her stop her treatments. Her baby brother has sickle cell disease and he is always on a hospital bed. She uses all her salary and savings to pay the doctors so his life can at least be preserved but she didn't expect she wouldn't live very long. Just a month. ×××××××××××××××××××××××× Elvira tried to cheer up as Kristin filled her ears with boring talks while they were being driven to the estate where they lived. "What do you want to eat? Your favorite?" Kristin asked, assisting Elvira in walking. Without waiting for Elvira's reply, she dashed into the kitchen. Elvira rushed upstairs, trying not to trip. She shut her room door and quickly loosened her shirt. If she's got one month to live, she can just sell off the bracelet and pay for her brother's bills so the doctors will do whatever they can to make him live. Removing her shirt and bra, she expected the bracelet to fall out but it didn't. She thrashed the shirt and bra upwards and downwards but there was nothing there. "Where the heck is the bracelet?" She muttered, removing her skirt and pants too. "Did it suddenly disappear?" She fondled her boobs as it disappeared into them. Elvira was panting already, the doctor advised she shouldn't do any hard work or stress herself but the bracelet was more important. "Are they stealing in a hospital now?" There is no way the bracelet would have dropped and she wouldn't be aware of it. It is a dangling one, it will surely make some noises. How on earth can I lose such a valuable thing? She thought. The driver! The driver claimed he carried her to the hospital, what if he only did that good deed to steal from her? No, it doesn't sound true. Elvira ruffled her hair tiredly, racking her brain on how she had lost such important stuff. Her phone suddenly rang and she placed it on her ear after swiping the green button upwards. "I'm sorry but it seems your brother needs your attention now." Even before the caller could end the call, Elvira fixed her clothes on and rushed out of the house. "Carlos? How are you? Are you hurt anywhere? Carlos!" Elvira could only reveal her pathetic side when it involves her only brother. "You have to calm down. We need to fly him out of the country as soon as possible." The doctor said and Elvira nodded, tears streaming down her eyes. The only hope she thought she could hold on to and make use of was already gone. The bracelet that would pay her brother's hospital bills is already gone. "Vira, where did you disappear to?" Kristin screamed on the phone and Elvira bit her lips to prevent her friend from hearing her sobs. She feels bad for not telling Kristin the truth but what can her friend do when she can do nothing? She couldn't fill Kristin's ear with another saddening story when she's only got one month to live, to accompany her. KRAKEN PACK ✓ "You are not supposed to be seen going in and out of the pack when you just became Alpha a few days ago." A sneaky voice sounded in the hallway but Alpha Wayne didn't even stop. "I became an Alpha, not a caged puppet." Alpha Wayne replied, making his way to his bedroom. Graham, his childhood best friend and just initiated Beta snorted, following him into the room. "Where did you go this time?" He asked. Alpha Wayne sat on the couch, raising the shiny bracelet to his face. "I met a sneaky b***h today who turns out to be an unbelievably sexy thief." He answered. "A sexy thief? When did ladies start to steal?" Graham chuckled at his friend's choice of description of whatever lady he had met. "She's sneaky. She stole my bracelet. I wouldn't have found her if the cab she entered didn't break down and she went into the woods for water." Alpha Wayne replied. Graham shook his head, "What if someone had seen you in your Cougar form?" He asked, looking at the doorway to make sure no one was eavesdropping. "She already saw my human form, what's so bad about showing her my cougar form? Besides, I needed to threaten her with my appearance to get my bracelet back." Alpha Wayne replied. Kraken pack has been a large favorable community for different levels of large cats, big dogs, a small percentage of wolves, and cougars but the highest of them all are the cougars, the mountain lion. The pack resides very far from the city where normal humans live and they have always lived in harmony following the rule that all of them are equal. Alpha Wayne was crowned Alpha a few days ago and has been monitoring the pack under the influence of his friend, Graham who was also given the position of the Beta. A rule in Kraken's pack must be followed after a few days of Alpha's break, he must go through a mating process whether he has a mate or not. "Well, the woman isn't a threat anymore since you already took your bracelet back. The pack matters await your attention." Graham informed. "It's just a few days since I became Alpha, is it necessary now?" Alpha Wayne rolled his eyes, threw the bracelet on his bed, and walked into the bathroom. Graham chuckled. He didn't understand when Wayne, his best friend, turned out so lazy. Maybe after his mother died and his grandfather forced him into becoming Alpha, stopping his other brothers from getting the position. "Grandfather wants you to get a mate and get married." Alpha Wayne growled as a reply from inside the bathroom. A mate and a wife?
