The room was dimly lit, illuminated only by the faint light filtering through the curtains. The clock on the nightstand read 1: 37 a.m., but sleep seemed elusive tonight. Lying on my side, I watched Daphne as she shifted restlessly in bed. Her breathing was irregular, and her subtle movements told me she couldn’t fall asleep.
There was something in her silence that worried me. Daphne wasn’t usually one to have trouble sleeping. She always said my presence calmed her, that the warmth of my body helped her relax. But tonight was different. I could feel the tension in the air, as if her thoughts were as unsettled as her movements.
