Mason POV
I direct Sadie to the chair to the right of my cottage entrance. She looks severely out of place. She sits and looks around my home. It's quaint and has not much for decor. The fire in my hearth has become a small smoldering flame but is doing its job at keeping my living space warm on this crisp fall day. Her gaze finds its way to me; waiting.
“So, this mirror you found….can you explain it to me?” I say.
“Well….” she looks down and wraps her arms around herself as if she is unsure how to explain. “It looked like a regular mirror. It was brassy looking. But worn, like some of the brass finish was scraped off in places revealing blackness underneath. There were spiral patterns along the frame. And….” she stops again, watching me and gauging my reaction to her. “The reflection was different.”
“What do you mean by different?”
“Everything appeared brighter.”
“Hmmm.” This cannot be. I hid that mirror a long time ago. My one job and it seems I may have failed that too. I shake my head, can’t think of that right now. I have to find out how this woman ended up here. Based on her outfit, there’s no way she is from here. I look her up and down again. Women don’t wear tight-fitting clothes, let alone pants. Leaves not much to the imagination.
“Anyways,” she starts, “I picked it up to take it home with me but, I'm actually not sure what happened. I felt like I was spinning and then when I opened my eyes I was here. I followed the smoke from your chimney here.”
“Okay,” was all I managed to reply. I headed towards my kitchen area and started to prepare some tea. She looks like she might need it. I steep the leaves for a few minutes, collecting myself. Should I tell her about the mirror? Clearly it has chosen her. Maybe I should wait. I stir the tea and gather my thoughts. I suppose it couldn’t hurt anything.
I head my way to the seating area where she is warming herself by the fire. I hand her a mug of tea with a soft smile. I take the seat to her left and place my mug down on the little wooden table between the chairs. I clear my throat and look at her face. She has piercing green eyes, that right now have so much confusion and concern swimming in them. Her black hair shimmers with the lights and is a strong contrast to her pale skin. She is beautiful.
“I do know of this mirror. I am not sure how to tell you any of this, but it seems as though I have no other choice. I guess just please pay attention and let me know if any of this makes sense to you.”
She sits up straight and takes a quick sip of her tea and nods.
