Chapter 3

With a bitter chuckle, I lay down on the sofa and fell asleep in my clothes. At seven in the morning, I walked out of my room wheeling my suitcase. Kally had posted another update. She shared a picture of Dustin sleeping on the edge of a hospital bed. The caption read: Thank you for staying with me all night. I don't know what I would've done without you. I let out a helpless chuckle and screenshotted the photo. Suddenly, Dustin walked through the door. Seeing the suitcase by my side, a flicker of panic crossed his eyes. I said calmly, "Let's break up." "Just because I didn't come home to eat with you?" He looked at me as if I was making a big deal out of nothing. "Scarlett, I've been really busy lately..." "Yesterday was my birthday." I cut him off. Dustin froze for a second, then quickly explained, "You know the company has hit a bottleneck lately, and I've been looking for new partnerships. Loyal Tech has been growing rapidly over the past six months, and I had dinner with their CEO last night. It got too late, and since I didn't want to disturb your sleep, I just stayed at a hotel nearby for the night." "Loyal Tech's CEO?" "Yes, Ms. Brooks." "And you stayed at a hotel?" "Yes." Staring at his earnest expression, I pulled out my phone and opened the two screenshots. Dustin's expression shifted through a flurry of colors. "Kally Miller is someone I poached from abroad. She doesn't have any friends here, so I have to take responsibility for her." "So you lied to me?" "Yes." "I'm only now realizing what kind of person you are." I smiled. "My decision stands. We're over. A piece of trash like you belongs in the dumpster." Seeing that I was serious, Dustin finally lost his temper out of sheer embarrassment. "Scarlett Brooks!" he barked, "Look at yourself. What else can you do besides huddling in the kitchen cooking all day? When the company hit a bottleneck and faced issues, or when I was getting pushed around, what were you doing?" I stared at him calmly. "I lost control of the company three years ago, and six months ago, you transferred my shares to Kally Miller. Do I have even a penny's worth of connection to the company now?" "Because you are nothing!" Dustin said coldly, "You and I haven't belonged to the same world for a long time. All you care about is pots and pans, while I'm looking at the vast world out there." See? Once someone falls out of love, even your virtues turn into flaws. He seemed to have forgotten. He was the one who had originally encouraged me to do what I loved. He was also the one who used to say my cooking was the best in the world. And now, he was the one insulting me, saying I was nothing. "Fine." I grabbed my suitcase and headed out. "Just wait and see." Goodbye, Dustin Hayes. Goodbye to my youth.
