Renee’s heart hammered against her ribs from the closeness between them. But she composed herself as she planted her palms against his chest and shoved him back.
“I am quite certain he’ll help me,” she spat, her expression hardening, filled with a cold defiance. She smoothed her blazer, her eyes flashing with a sharp, professional edge.
“And let’s be clear: do not bring personal grievances into this office again. More importantly, refrain from cornering your assistant. If it weren’t for me, it would be seen as harassment, Boss.”
Killian’s jaw tightened. The word harassment was too much, sparking a flare of indignant rage in his chest.
“Who do you think you are!” Killian snapped, his jaw tight with anger. The word 'harassment' was too much for her to say. She was still his wife, no matter how much they fought. He felt like he had every right to be near her, and her accusation felt like a slap in the face.
Renee didn't even blink. She didn't give him the satisfaction of an argument. She just turned and walked toward the door, her heels clicking loudly on the floor.
At the exit, she paused and looked back at him, her expression stone-cold.
“And don’t you ever dare threaten to kick me out of that house again,” she said, her voice low and firm. “If you do, I’ll show you what I’m really capable of.”
She didn’t wait for an answer. She stepped out and slammed the door shut. Killian stood there alone, fists clenched and seething. The room was quiet, but her perfume still lingered.
Killian just couldn’t understand why they couldn’t have a simple conversation for once.

Renee hurried out of the office and headed straight for the restroom. Her heart was still thumping against her chest, and she needed a second to breathe. She ducked into a stall, locked the door, and just sat there, closing her eyes to try and find some peace.
But the silence didn't last long.
The door swung open, and a group of women walked in, their voices echoing off the tiles. Reneefroze, not wanting to be seen, so she just stayed inside.
“I seriously don't get what’s so special about that new secretary,” one of them said, the sound of a lipstick cap clicking open following her words. “I mean, the Boss never lets women work that close to him, let alone as a personal assistant.”
“Right?” another girl chimed in. “She must have done something pretty 'extra' to land that job. I’ve seen her going into his office at all hours.”
Renee clenched her jaw, her knuckles turning white. She wanted to burst out and defend herself, but she stayed still.
“Shh! Keep it down,” a third girl whispered harshly. “Don’t gossip about the Boss like that. He isn't the type to mess around, you saw what he did just the other day, didn't you?”
“Oh, god, don't remind me,” the first girl muttered, her tone shifting from judgmental to scared. “The way he handled them... I’ve never seen him so ruthless.”
They talked for a few more minutes about work before finally leaving. The door creaked shut, leaving Renee in total silence again. She sat there, staring at the back of the stall door, wondering exactly what Killian had done this time.
By the time Renee finally left the restroom, it was already lunchtime.
She decided not to prepare anything for Killian. She couldn't stand the thought of facing him again so soon, so she headed down to the cafeteria to eat in peace.
But the moment she stepped inside, the atmosphere was full of chaos.
Everywhere she turned, people were whispering in small groups. They were all talking about Killian and something he had done, but no one was being clear about the details.
Ignoring the stares, she grabbed a tray and tucked herself into a quiet corner seat, hoping to be invisible.
“My God!” a man at the table behind her exclaimed. “I was standing right there when Assistant Renee ran out of the office in tears.”
Renee froze, her fork halfway to her mouth. What are they talking about?
“Me too,” another guy said, leaning in closer, totally unaware that Renee was sitting right behind him. “I’ve never seen the Boss lose his temper like that. He looked like he wanted to kill someone.”
“‘You are all suspended!’—that’s exactly what he shouted,” a third guy added, sounding impressed. “I have to admit, Boss was so cool. I mean, he didn't just defend his assistant’s honor; he actually suspended his own family members just for speaking poorly of her.”
Renee sat there, stunned. She stared at her food.
Did he really do that for her?
She was angry at him for saying just harsh words to her and not defending her, but… to see that he had suspended those people… Why was she not aware of that?
She was still in her thoughts when a familiar word echoed right above her head.
