CHAPTER 9: CROSSING THE LINE

354 Words
Valeria tried to sleep. She failed. Her body was tired, pleasantly sore from the gym, but her mind refused to rest. It replayed everything—the way Tomás had looked at her, the deliberate calm in his voice, the awareness that lingered long after he was gone. I’m not betraying anyone, she reminded herself. And still, something inside her trembled. The next afternoon, she saw him again. “You look distracted,” Tomás said as she finished her workout. She smiled faintly. “Is it that obvious?” “Only to people who are paying attention.” They walked outside together, the city warm and alive. Neither mentioned coffee. Neither needed to. They stopped on the sidewalk, standing close enough that Valeria could feel the heat of his body through the thin fabric of her clothes. “I’ve been thinking about you,” Tomás said quietly. Valeria didn’t pretend surprise. “I know.” His hand lifted slowly, deliberately, giving her time to step back. She didn’t. His fingers brushed her cheek—warm, grounding, sending a quiet shiver through her. “If this feels like too much,” he said, “tell me.” Valeria searched his face. Younger, yes—but steady. Honest. “It doesn’t,” she replied. The kiss was slow. Exploratory. Not desperate. Not hungry. Her body responded instantly, warmth blooming low in her belly, breath catching as his hand settled at her waist—firm, respectful, sure. When they pulled apart, her forehead rested against his chest. “I haven’t done this in a long time,” she admitted. “I know,” he said softly. “We can go slow.” She looked up at him, really looked. “I don’t want to stop,” she said. He smiled—not victorious, not rushed. “Neither do I.” They didn’t go further that day. And that restraint made it unbearable in the best way. As Valeria walked home later, lips still tingling, heart racing, she understood something vital: Desire didn’t erase her grief. It reminded her she was still capable of feeling. And that changed everything.
