CHAPTER 3: THE HOUSE HE LEFT BEHIND

372 Words
The house should have felt empty. Instead, it felt exposed. Valeria stood just inside the front door, keys still warm in her hand, as if crossing the threshold required permission she no longer had. The familiar scent of clean linen and coffee lingered in the air, but it didn’t comfort her. It felt staged. Like a house prepared for an audience that no longer existed. Sofía set her bag down slowly, eyes scanning the living room with a careful distance that made Valeria’s chest tighten. Diego followed, dropping his backpack with more force than necessary. “So,” he said flatly. “Is it true?” Valeria closed the door behind them. The sound echoed too loudly. “There are things we don’t understand yet,” she replied carefully. “Your father made choices he never explained.” “He had another kid,” Diego snapped. “That’s not confusing. That’s lying.” The word hit harder than Valeria expected. She took a breath. “I need you both to hear me. None of this is your fault. Not mine either.” Sofía swallowed. “Did you know?” “No.” The answer came out sharp. Immediate. “If I had known,” Valeria continued, her voice quieter now, “I would never have stayed. Not for a moment.” That night, after the house finally went still, Valeria opened Andrés’s closet. Everything was exactly where it had always been. His shirts aligned by color. His watches laid out like trophies. His shoes polished, untouched. She sank to the floor, clutching one of his jackets, and let out a hollow laugh. “Of course,” she whispered. “Even your things knew how to pretend.” Her phone buzzed. A message from Lucía. We need to talk about the apartment. Valeria stared at the screen. The words pulsed like a threat. She didn’t reply. Instead, she walked into the bathroom and faced her reflection. The woman staring back at her looked older than she remembered. Not weaker— just stripped of illusion. For the first time in twenty-eight years, Valeria understood something terrifying: She had been married to a stranger. And now, she had to learn who she was without him.
