Chapter 2 Unforeseen Consequences

334 Words
In my graduation gown, I slumped on the steps outside the lecture hall, my eyes glued to my phone in disbelief. Just two months earlier, Samuel had made the trek to my city on a snowy day, undeterred by the weather. He arrived weary from the journey, with snowflakes sprinkled on his hair and lashes. As soon as he saw me, he folded me into his embrace. "Nina, I couldn't wait any longer," he confessed. The vast distance between us hadn't stopped him from hopping on a train that night to see me. His resolve touched me, and that night, we gave in to the moment. Just as things heated up, I suggested he get protection downstairs. Samuel merely chuckled, cupped my face with gentle hands, and said with a grin, "It's alright. If we have a baby, I'll marry you. Once we graduate, we'll settle down. I'll build a family with you." Lost in the softness of his gaze, I could never have guessed that our shared warmth would lead to what it did—a pregnancy I hadn't foreseen. As new graduates, we were without steady jobs and financial stability, making the notion of marriage and raising a baby seem impossible. Nevertheless, with a baby on the way, one of us had to consider a career shift. If we decided to keep the little one, a long-distance relationship was out of the question. I texted him about the pregnancy, and he replied instantly. Samuel: Don't worry. We'll tie the knot right after graduation and start a family. Though I couldn't see his face, his words enveloped me like a hug, as if he stood there, holding me close and whispering softly. I grinned. Since Samuel was eager to marry me once we graduated, I was ready to leave my job for him. I had just sent in my resignation, canceling my afternoon return ticket. I planned to spring the news on Samuel after his workday ended, hoping to catch him by surprise.
