Chapter Six: Rain in the Piazza

334 Words
The rain arrived softly, like a whispered warning. It started with a few drops on the terrace canopy, then came steady and sure, soaking the old stones and quieting the chatter of the city. Most people rushed for shelter. Isabelle, however, stood still in the middle of the Piazza Santa Croce, camera pointed skyward, catching the blurred silhouettes of raindrops against cathedral spires. Luca watched her from beneath the overhang of a nearby colonnade, his violin case clutched to his chest. She looked unbothered by the storm—hair damp, dress clinging to her knees, a faint smile ghosting her lips as she adjusted her lens. “Crazy woman,” he murmured with a grin and stepped out into the rain. She didn’t notice him approach until he was right beside her. “You’ll ruin your violin,” she warned without looking. “It’s in the case,” he replied, squinting at the sky. “Besides, I couldn’t let you have all the dramatic moments.” Isabelle lowered her camera. “This city feels different in the rain. Softer. Quieter.” “Sad, maybe,” he offered. “No,” she said, shaking her head slightly. “Honest.” They stood together as the rain came down, surrounded by puddles reflecting old stone buildings and flickering lights. Time seemed to slow again, like it always did around him. “You ever wonder,” Luca said, voice barely audible over the patter, “why we meet certain people in certain places?” Isabelle met his gaze. “You think there’s a reason?” “I think… some souls recognize each other. Even if they’ve never met.” Her heart skipped. She didn’t know if it was the rain or his words or the way he said them. But she felt something shift. Something open. And for the first time in a long while, Isabelle didn’t want to run. She just wanted to stay—in the rain, in the music, in the moment. With him.
