A Big Mistake

‘’Jermaine, I gave you a lot of time and several chances to better your life.’' Abigail Smith was packing Jermaine’s clothes by the time he got back home. Half of Jermaine’s belongings were already outside by the time he arrived. ‘’What are you doing? That’s my most expensive shirt.’’ Jermaine’s eyes widened as he saw the way Abigail squeezed his shirt into his torn travelling bag. Abigail shook her head at the sight of the bag. ‘’I fought for us, Jermaine.’’ Stopping for a moment, she turned to look at Jermaine, and spoke directly to her husband, who would soon be known as her former husband. ‘’Where do you expect me to go?’’ Jermaine asked. Looking closely, he realized that he had bigger problems than a piece of clothing. ‘’I don’t know, dear. I have given you a home for five years. I gave you a job, I even gave you a social life, but you could not do anything with it.’’ ‘’I’m sorry, but I cannot continue to have you around. Maybe you’d do better when you are out there in the cold.’’ By the time Abigail said the last word, she had taken out the last of Jermaine’s belongings while the young man just stood there, speechless. ‘’I’ll call you a cab. I’ll pay for it. Where should I tell him that your destination is?’’ Abigail asked. At this point, Jermaine was genuinely short of words. With the way Abigail always stood up for him against her family anytime they humiliated him, he thought that she would never turn her back on him. What had suddenly changed? Also, where did all the warmth in her eyes go? Did she realize that he did not have anywhere to live for even a second? If Jermaine walked out of that door, he would not even know if he should go left or right. Didn’t Abigail know that? ‘’You’re a man, Jermaine. Try to act like one. Your first task? Survive this!’’ With that, Abigail shoved Jermaine outside into the chill of the evening. It had been raining for three straight days, so the weather was icy. Apart from the icy weather, Jermaine felt alone. He had nobody to call, and honestly, nowhere to go. Not even to a dilapidated house. Drained beyond words, Jermaine took his bag and swung it over his shoulder. He was lucky enough to have no more than ten clothes, so his luggage was light. Jermaine walked a distance until he arrived at the elite part of town. His stomach grumbled, and he knew that he would not survive the night if he did not eat. ‘’You should have made this noise when Abigail was kicking me out. Maybe she would have fed me first before asking me to leave.’’ Jermaine rubbed his stomach as he spoke. Besides, of all places to become desperately hungry! At the elite part of town, where a plate of food costs 2000 dollars. Jermaine decided to give it a try, so he walked for a mile before he saw a restaurant that looked nothing like the others around the area. This restaurant was old and had a few people inside. ‘’Aha! This is one of those,’’ Jermaine said as he dropped his luggage at a hidden corner and started to enter the restaurant. Without checking the menu and pricelist, Jermaine ordered food. ‘’Since this is the beginning of a very long road, I had better spoil myself.’’ Jermaine got comfortable at the back of the restaurant while he watched with glee as the waiter brought his food to him. ‘’There you go, sir.’’ A smiling gentleman served Jermaine with pleasure and respect. When Jermaine saw the food, it was as if his senses came back to him, so he asked the waiter, How much does this cost?’’ ‘’Oh, it’s just 3,800 dollars, sir,’’ the waiter replied. Jermaine’s mouth dropped open when he heard what the waiter said. Just 3,800 dollars? Jermaine started sweating. ‘’But, I thought this was the cheapest restaurant around here because of the way it looks.’’ While Jermaine said that, the waiter shot him a surprised look. ‘’Old?’’ The waiter laughed. ‘’Sir, this restaurant was deliberately designed to buttress the olden-day architecture. It is designed to lure in those with old money, and as you can see, not a lot of people have the type of money that this restaurant envisages its customers to have.’’ With all the heavy English that the waiter was speaking, Jermaine knew that he was doomed. ‘’Can I return it?’’ Jermaine asked, but his face sank when he saw the waiter shaking his head. ‘’Already ordered and recorded as served, sir. Enjoy your meal.’’ The waiter walked away, leaving Jermaine to think about his issues. Jermaine could not remember how hungry he was when he walked into that restaurant. His hunger immediately disappeared and was replaced with fear and confusion. He looked at the dish that had been served. The lobster was dripping with juice and sauce. He understood why the food cost so much by the time he took a closer look. ‘’I’ll pay for it.’’ A voice, feminine and smooth like milk, made Jermaine snap back to reality. He looked to his left and saw a lady smiling at him. The lady was so beautiful and gentle. Jermaine was sure that there was no way she could have been the person to have spoken to him. But it was just both of them in that space, so? Jermaine continued to look at her. ‘’Enjoy that meal, I'll pay.’’ When the pretty lady spoke to Jermaine, she also got up and started to approach his table while Jermaine glared at her in shock. The next thing that Jermaine witnessed was that she had taken a seat in front of him. ‘’This lobster looks too good for you to abandon it. I’ll love for you to have it.’’ The lady stuck a fork into Jermaine’s lobster and looked at him. Then she said, Go on, open your mouth,’’ as she stretched the lobster in front of Jermaine’s mouth.
