Elodie's POV
The adrenaline crashed the second I stepped out of the subway station.
It didn't just fade. It evaporated, leaving me hollow and shaking. I pulled my thin trench coat tighter across my chest, shivering as the damp evening wind bit at my face.
I kept my head down and walked as fast as my toes would allow. But every few seconds, I couldn't stop myself from looking over my shoulder.
A stray cat knocked over an empty soda can in an alleyway. I flinched as my heart leaped into my throat.
A man in a dark hoodie walked out of a laundromat across the street and I stopped breathing until he turned the opposite corner.
