I left Metro General with my shoulders tight and my mind still stuck on the doctor’s voice. Elodie had survived and was awake but the rest of the news sat heavily in my chest.
The doctor gave no clear timeline or a promise about the stage. Only careful words about rehabilitation and the next forty-eight hours.
