Chapter 8 Josie

2409 Words
Emily tried to keep her distance from Mark while cleaning the coffee table. Mark became polite and courteous again, as if what had happened had just been Emily's dream. “Dear... I'm sorry to upset you...” Mark walked over to Emily and put his arm around her waist. "I know that since the honeymoon, the mess has made our marriage get a little frayed around the edges, but." Speaking of this, he even choked up a little, “But I'm gonna heal the rupture and repair the damage, okay? Dear...” Emily felt a dull pain in her head. There was an aching emptiness in her heart, and then her heart beat faster and faster. She said through her teeth, "Okay..." Then she quickly changed the topic, "Go take a shower, Mark." Mark nodded obediently and left. Emily was like a drowning girl who could finally breathe fresh air. Her nerves were settled. After a while, Mark had finished his bath and went into the bedroom to lie down. So Emily hurried into the bathroom. The small space seemed to give her some sense of peace and security. The water on her body also let her body and mind feel relaxed. However, she was surprised to find that she was somewhat getting fatter than before, and she didn't know why her belly had became bigger. It seemed that she needs more exercise. She washed her body, thinking that her health had gradually worsened. She was always prone to feeling nauseous and her period was not as regular as before. Actually, she didn't have a period for a long time. Maybe she should go to see a doctor and check her body sometime. As time passed, Emily finally finished the bath and went into the bedroom. Lying on the bed, Mark gave her a wink. Then he smiled and patted the bed. "Hey, sweetie, come on!" This was something that used to happen almost every night, and now Emily felt that the man in front of her was strange. After a few seconds of hesitation, she lay down next to Mark, and then Mark leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. "Good night, darling." "Good night..." Then they turned off the light and both closed their eyes. The next morning, Mark gave Emily a morning kiss: "Honey, I'm going to work, remember to miss me." Then Emily slowly opened her eyes and saw Mark, who was standing beside the bed in a suit, bending over and talking to Emily. “Oh... Okay...” Emily was still half asleep and responded weakly. Then Mark smiled and left the house. After lying down for a while, Emily woke up and stretched lazily. She remembered the changes of her body. She wanted to see a doctor to check. But it was difficult to make an appointment. She decided to call the doctor and seek some advice first in case she wasted her time. She got the phone number on the Internet. Emily tried to dial the number. The phone did not ring for a long time before connecting. A sweet voice came from the phone: “Hello! This is the General Hospital. May I help you?” “Uh... Yes. In fact, I want to ask something. I feel that my belly has become bigger recently, and I often have the feeling of nausea and vomiting. Oh yes, my period hasn't come for a long time. What tests are needed for these conditions?” Emily was nervous. She didn't want anything strange to happen to her. “Oh! Ma'am, from what you've described, I think there's a strong possibility that you're pregnant. It is recommended that you can buy a pregnancy test and test yourself at home, and if the test results show that you are indeed pregnant, you can make an appointment for the corresponding examination.” The hospital staff's tone was relaxed, but Emily's heart was suddenly heavy. “Oh! Oh, my God! You mean, you mean pregnant?” Emily was in shock, she never thought about it, “Uh... Ok, thanks... I see.” Then she quickly hung up the phone. It was certainly thrilling news, and she hesitated for a moment before testing it. She was wondering if she should go buy a pregnancy test right now to get the final result. Even though she waited until the last moment, the result, which had been determined, would not change. So she quickly decided to take action and went to a nearby pharmacy to buy a pregnancy test. Emily, who had never used this before, carefully followed the instructions on the package to start testing. The result finally showed that she was pregnant, and she didn't know if that was good or bad. "God..." She stared at the result, as if a lot of thoughts ran through her mind and then it all disappeared. She didn't even think that she would become a mother. But apparently this was not the right time, and her marriage is even somewhat in jeopardy. Maybe the test wasn't accurate. Emily comforted herself and called the hospital again. The good news is that the basic pregnancy test can be done the same day and doesn't take much time. So Emily quickly disposed of the pregnancy test and then took a taxi to the General Hospital. There were not many people in the hospital, which saved Emily a lot of time. She waited nervously for the test results. Then the doctor took the report and congratulated her: "Honey, you are in good health and you are more than three months pregnant!" Emily took the report and she forgot how she replied, only feeling her mind blank for a few seconds. Emily went home, clutching the report and sitting on the big sofa. She was counting. When did she get pregnant? It was during the honeymoon. The results of the report were undoubtedly correct, and she did not know what to do with her unborn child. Should she abort it? No! She couldn't, and she did not want to. She always imagined that Mark would have a cute baby with her and they lived a happy life together. Furthermore, Mark promised yesterday that he would change, didn't he? Emily still loved Mark and wanted to trust him again. Plus, there was a cute baby in her belly. It can stand for the love between Mark and her. Mark always wanted to have a child, and perhaps after having a child, he would spend more on family. Even if only for the sake of the children, Emily decided to stick to it and protect the family. After adjusting the mood, she put the report into the cabinet. Emily felt so much brighter now that she was even thinking about her baby's name. Even though she hadn't figured out how to tell Mark the news. The doorbell suddenly rang while she was doing the housework and indulging in the beautiful imagination of her future life. Emily thought that Mark had come home from work early, but on second thought, Mark had the key, there was no need to ring the doorbell. It made her feel strange that she had lived here for so long and had never had a visitor. Who could it be? Is she looking for Mark? The doorbell rang again. Emily cut off her thoughts and opened the door. There was a young and pretty lady who was dressed in sumptuous fabrics standing at the door. She was wearing a very exquisite dress and a pair of high-heeled shoes. Her bag was one of those expensive designer products. Although Emily was the wife of the CEO, she couldn't recognize too many famous brands and had never worn expensive clothes. But even so, she could still recognize that the woman was wearing something expensive. Even with those small jewelries, Emily knew that it was something she could never afford. Not knowing why, the name "Josie" popped into Emily's head. "You're Emily, right?" The lady took the lead, and Emily was stunned by her haughty airs. “Uh... Yes, that's right. May I ask who you are?” Emily asked with appropriate courtesy. “Even if poor children become rich, they still lack proper etiquette.” The lady rolled her eyes upward. After seeing that Emily was still not making any movement, she shouted angrily, “I've been standing here for so long, and I wasn't even invited to have a cup of coffee! Oh, my God! If it weren't for God's sake, I would...” The lady's words had not finished, Emily finally responded. She invited her into the room. When the lady sat down, Emily did not forget to pour her a cup of coffee, and then she sat down. “Who are you? Are you looking for Mark?” Emily asked again patiently, as if she were going to teach her baby how to receive a guest. “Mark…… It does have something to do with him. But I'm here to see you, Emily.” The woman stroked her hair, glancing at Emily, and then she said, "I'm sure you've heard who I am. You know the name Josie, don't you?" Emily was surprised that the woman was really Josie, that rich daughter! But why did Josie come to see her? Before Emily could ask, Josie continued, “I know what you're thinking. Mark and I have known each other longer than you have. And Mark's wife was supposed to be me, you understand? Hey, don't look at me like you are the hostess. It's disgusting!” Hearing this, Emily was completely dumbfounded. Are those so-called rumors really true? Her eyes were moist, like tears. But she didn't cry and asked: “Josie…… Mrs. Heron, I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean...” “Oh! Oh, my God! Don't call me like that! I'm not married!” Josie turned her head away in disgust and stared into Emily's eyes. “This is how you entice mark? That's impressive. But I'm not here to talk about this nonsense.” Josie stood up and walked over to Emily, looking down at her: “You should know that you are not good enough for Mark because of your family. There is no real love between you and Mark. He married you just for his parents.” Because the distance between Emily and Josie was so close. Emily could easily smell Josie's perfume, which was the same smell that night on Mark. Her words stung Emily exactly the way Josie hoped it would. Her head began to tingle again. She lowered her head slightly to avoid eye contact with Josie and said, “No. I believe the promise Mark made to me. Even if the marriage is for the parents, what does it matter? He said he loved me, he gave me a lot of warmth, he took care of me...” “Wow! You're so naive. I know everything that happened between you and Mark, including your first night.” Josie smiled. Emily's face was red and she couldn't say a word. Looking at Emily like this, Josie continued without pity: “Don't you want to know where Mark was when he wasn't at his office? Let me tell you, honey, he's always with me.” Josie accentuated the last sentence. “If it is true. Then why didn't he marry you? Why did he choose me?” Emily raised the question that had been hidden in her heart for a long time. “I already told you, honey. He married with you for his parents. As you probably know, I had an unhappy marriage before. Of course, this is nothing to be ashamed of for me. Mark and I loved each other, but his parents... How dare those two old bastards scorned me!” With that, Josie stared fiercely. “And you, poor thing, even if those two old fools agreed to your marriage, you're just a cleaning machine. You are just a person who could give him a child. As ordinary people, you may not know...” Speaking of which, Josie paused to get a better look at Emily's face, and then continued, “Mark took the company from his father, and he needed a child as his successor to continue the Archer family business. “ Emily shook her head in pain, and she could no longer hold back her tears: “No! I won't believe you! I want to hear Mark tell me that! I don't trust you.” Josie sighed with profound resignation and said: “Oh! God. How stubborn you are!” “Why are you telling me this? Since Mark and I are married, and we have not yet had a child, his plans are not yet complete. Why are you coming?” Emily's pain turned to anger, and she began to question Josie. “Hey, I'm just trying to remind you of who you are. You are just a tool!” Josie also stopped smiling and stared at Emily with a straight face. “So you came here to warn me when Mark wasn't around? I'm sorry, I'm still Mark's wife, and I hope you can remember your own identity!” Emily's hand stroked her belly, and the warmth of her palm seemed to give her endless power. Josie glanced at her, only snorted and turned away. The clicking of high heels upset Emily. After making sure that Josie was really gone. Emily collapsed on the table and sobbed. She didn't know if she had made the right decision to keep the baby. She didn't know if what Josie had said was true. She didn't know if she should continue. All the preparations that had been made before, after the sudden change, became shaky again. Time passed quickly after her conversation with Josie, and it was already dark outside. Mark came home on time today. “Hey, honey, did you miss me? It's been a busy day. Because of you, I decided to come back early.” He took off his coat with a cheerful expression and leaned over to Emily and kissed her on the cheek. Then he noticed that one of the cupboards had not been closed properly, so he went and pulled it open to see what was inside. He saw the report. “Oh, my God! Honey! Tell me, is this true?! You're pregnant!”
