Chapter 7 Quarrel

2226 Words
Mark and Emily went back to their home. It was reassuring to see the familiar place. By tacit agreement, the subject was never mentioned again. They pretended casual as if nothing had happened before. As soon as Mark got home, he turned on the computer to deal with his work. Emily was unpacking their bags. There weren't a lot of things in the suitcase except for clothes, and then Emily saw the two dolls clinging together. She could not help but crouch down and pick up two dolls. She gently touched them, and she heard Mark's voice from the top of her head. "Honey, we can buy more different dolls if you like." Mark stopped working, gently hugging Emily from behind and rubbing her arm. Emily felt the warmth of his arms around her. She smiled and said, “No. That's enough, I just thought it would be great if we could love each other forever like them.” Mark wrapped his arms around her even harder, lowering his head closer to her ear. Mark said in a low, sweet voice: “Hey, what are you talking about, honey? We are sweeter than them. If you don't believe me, let me prove it to you tonight.” Mark smiled and didn't go on. He just kissed her on the cheek and went back to the computer. Emily flushed and placed the dolls in a conspicuous place in their bedroom, making sure they could be seen from every angle. In the following months, life didn't seem to change a lot, except that Mark became busier and busier, and his time at home with Emily gradually decreased. At first, Mark would send her several messages or tell Emily that he might come home late, and sometimes he would even video call her to let her accompany him at work. Although Emily felt a little lonely, she could still see the face of her beloved man through the video. But gradually, Mark only occasionally sent a message to tell Emily that he would come home late today. Even if Emily called him, she would just got a busy signal or Mark would hang up the phone. Sometimes, she would take out the doll that represented the male side and touched it gently, as if she could see Mark through it. She was worried that Mark was too busy at work and had forgotten to have dinner. She also worried that Mark would be as lonely as she was. The dolls clung together, which seemed to give her the courage. So she decided to go to the company. Maybe Mark would feel warm with her constant companion. Emily only received a text message from Mark this afternoon: "Dear, I am very busy today. I will stay late at the office, you should go to bed early and have a good rest." She didn't tell Mark her plan because she wanted to surprise him. She replied, "Okay, dear." Then he decided to bring his own homemade dinner and give it to Mark. Since Mark had rarely stayed at home these days. They hadn't had dinner together for a long time. Emily didn't bother to cook for herself, either getting a carry-out or just a few slices of bread to finish her meal. In order to complete her plan, she also learned some new recipes on the internet. And then she went to the supermarket to select some vegetables and meats. She was busy at cooking a delicious meal at home. She remembered that Mark loved exotic food, such as the lemon shrimp that day at the buffet. Although she still couldn't accept that taste, it was not that difficult to learn this dish because of Mark. In fact, Emily was not a very good cook, especially after so many days without cooking. Her skills had become more rusty. Lemon shrimp need to clean the shell of each shrimp, but the index finger of her left hand was accidentally punctured by the hard shell as she was doing it. The blood dripped onto the table. She quickly put down the shrimp and washed away the blood from her index finger with pain. Then she took out a Band-Aid she bought on their honeymoon and stuck it on her finger. She couldn't help but think that Mark might hold her in his arms right now if he were here. Emily shook her head and let these unrealistic thoughts get out of her head. It took a long time, but she finally finished the dish with her wounds. She picked up her fork and tasted it. Even though this dish didn't taste good, at least it's cooked. So maybe Mark won't be too disappointed. After putting the food into the exquisite lunch box and preparing the tableware and other things, Emily also deliberately wore a long-sleeved top, hoping that the sleeves could cover her injured fingers. She didn't want Mark to be worried about it. Then she took a taxi and was ready to go to the company. It had been a long time since she entered the company. She was a little nervous, but she also worried that her former colleagues would notice her. They would provide lots of gossip for a few days. But obviously she worried too much because she didn't even get into the company. When she went to the reception of the company, the staff obviously did not expect that there were guests visiting at the end of the day. Still, she smiled and asked, "Hello, what can I do for you?" “Uh... I'm here to see Mark. Yes, Mark Archer.” Emily's voice seemed to be a little weak. Although they had been married for a while, it seemed that only the two of them knew about it. She now regretted her impulsive behavior and hoped that her unexpected visit would not disturb Mark's work. "Oh!" The staff looked surprised and then asked, "Do you have an appointment?" "No." Emily didn't know she had to make an appointment to meet the firm's top manager. After all, she used to be Mark's secretary. Just across the door, and she could enter his office. At that time, Mark appeared in front of her almost every day, and there was no need for any "appointment." "I see." The staff nodded. “Mr. Archer hasn't been to the company in recent days. I thought you were the guest who made an appointment with Mr. Archer in advance. I'm sorry, but you won't be able to see him today.” The smile froze on her lips. The staff noticed it keenly. She put on an apologetic smile and asked, “Would you like to leave your name and the details of your visit? I can call Mr. Archer later and ask him to contact you when he is free.” Emily did not remember how she finally replied. Only because her mind was blank and her heart seemed to explode, and it was convulsing with pain. She ran away from the office, clutching the lunch box with one hand. She took out her cell phone with the other and called Mark. Furthermore, she was ashen and trembling. However, the mechanical female voice coming from the mobile phone made her stop thinking. "The number you have dialed is busy, please try again later..." After walking for hours, Emily walked home alone. The sky was completely dark. Mark never contacted her again. When she opened the door, the room was dark and exactly as it was before Emily left. Mark did not return. After turning on the light, Emily put the lunch box on the coffee table and poured herself a glass of water. The cool water flowed into her mouth, and her fatigue suddenly eased. But not long after sitting on the sofa, the door opened. “Hey, my dear Emily, why are you waiting for me so late? God, I am so tired today. My fatigue disappeared as soon as I saw you at home!” When Mark saw Emily, he immediately put on a smile of surprise. But for Emily, this smile was really a bit harsh. Mark took off his coat and put his phone on the coffee table. He sat down next to Emily and hugged her. Emily smelled some alcohol on him, then she smiled back reluctantly and asked: “Hmm.... Where have you been these days?” "What?" Mark didn't understand. “Of course I'm always at the office, honey. Why do you ask?” After hearing his answer, Emily was at rock bottom. But she still kept on asking, “No. Nothing. I made some food. Would you like to try it?” She opened the lunch box on the table, and the color of the shrimp had become a little pale because of the long time that had passed. But Mark was still constantly eating them as if he were the most considerate husband, and then he finished most of his meal. “That's great, honey! After working all day, I was hungry. You can always make me love you more!” Emily looked at him. She clenched her fists to stop herself from trembling so that she was bleeding again from the wound she had suffered hours before. But the pain of the wound didn't compare with the anguish from her heart. "I was supposed to bring this to your office today, honey." Emily spoke slowly, looking at the lunch box. Mark dropped his fork and asked every word with great care, as if to confirm something: “So you didn't go to the company, did you.?” "Yes, I went to the company. But you weren't there.” That was not the answer Mark wanted to hear. He thought about the solution in his mind: “Uh... Yes, I did go out for a while. You know, I need to see a lot of clients and talk business with them. It's not an easy thing.” "You haven't been to the office in a few days, have you?" Emily asked lightly. She had lost the strength to argue or cry, and she really did not want to see the man in front of her. He seemed to have forgotten the oath he had promised, and the wedding was never mentioned again. “Honey, just like I said, I need to see a lot of clients. You can't just wait for a good business deal in an office. No matter where I am, I just work hard!” Mark started to get a little manic, weird, and uptight. Emily didn't respond. “Ok, I see... You still don't believe me, do you? Maybe I can give you a list of these clients, and you should contact them yourself. Where do you think the necklace and the ring come from? It's the money I earned! Oh, I forgot, you have been out of the workplace for so long that you may have lost track of the meaning of the word 'work'. Or do you think that all I have to do every day is just sit in front of the computer and use the keyboard like you used to do?” As if being insulted, Mark got up angrily and walked around the living room, shouting and holding his head. Emily was so shocked that she burst into tears. The man she love has turned into a "crazy person." Those words hurt Emily deeply. She never thought that she was so unbearable in Mark's heart. Or that anyone could look down on her, but Mark couldn't. But Emily didn't go on. She didn't want to provoke Mark anymore. All they could hear were her sobs and Mark's footsteps. After a while, perhaps Mark finally noticed Emily's sobs, or perhaps his anger had subsided, and he sat back on the sofa as if nothing had happened. “Honey, I'm sorry... I didn't mean to say that. That is, by no means, what I really thought in my mind. I just. I was just too eager to prove myself, honey. I don't know why you doubted me so much. We're married. We should trust each other, right?” Mark shook his head in pain, then pressed his head against Emily's collarbone. He whispered, “You know I love you, Emily. I will always love you. Please trust me, okay?” Now that the smell of alcohol had not completely dissipated from Mark's body, coupled with his words, Emily felt a little nauseous. She held back her desire to vomit and sat rigidly. At that moment, the mobile phone that was put on the tea table suddenly rang. Mark suddenly raised his head. Before he could pick up his phone, Emily saw the message on the screen - "Dear Josie." Then the phone was grabbed by Mark, and even knocked over the lunch box that had not been eaten clean. The remaining soup was sprinkled on the surface of the coffee table, and the ringing stopped. Mark gave Emily an ugly smile, as if nothing had happened. "It's not an important phone call. It's late. Let's rest, sweetheart." Emily broke out in a cold sweat, wondering if the marriage was necessary to continue. Even though she was now the wife of a famous CEO and had countless fortunes.
