chapter 2

Morning light peaks up through the trees, causing me to stir awake. I untie myself from the tree and climb down. Even with the forest still partially dark I can make out the trees and shrubs on the ground. Our eye sight is much better than most humans so navigating the forest at this time is easy. Once my final shift happens I'll be able to navigate the forest at night as well. I start walking though the brush trying to add more distance between me and that little town. I'm not sure if they would have started a search party for me or not but I don't want to take that chance. I quicken my paste to a small jog, which is a bit difficult for any human in the forest. Anything from a tree root to a hole in the ground would be difficult to spot. However with my enhanced vision I am able to spot and avoid these obstacles. I cover about twenty nine miles before I have to stop and make camp again. I had portioned out my can food just right to prolong my supply. I can eat a canned food tonight and hunt tomorrow. If I switch between the two I will be able to have enough food for a week. I gather up some wood and start my fire. It's tricky if you don't know basic survival skills. After I got the fire started I gathered some water from the stream and purified it while my food was warming up. As I watch the flames dance around I remember whining about how I had to learn survival skills. I realized that I owed my parents for a lot. They weren't the best but they were better than some parents. When my food was ready to eat, I munch down as I gazed up at the stars. Just as I'm about to take my last bite I hear a stick snap a few yards away. I quickly put my fire out and scrambled up the tree. I mask my smell so nothing could notice my presence while I waited to see what was coming by. A few minutes go by before I see three large wolfs look around my little camp site. (I'm close to another's pack because these aren't any normal wolfs.) I think to myself. They smell around the camp for a little while before a couple of the wolfs scatter in different directions. (They probably decided to split up to try to find me.) I noticed that one of the wolfs stayed at my camp site waiting to see if I would come back. I weighed my options as I sat there waiting for them to leave. ( If I catch the wolf below me off guard I would have to knock him out which would alarm the other wolfs. If they leave here shortly I can climb down and make a run for it but I couldn't guarantee that I would be able to leave if they caught a smell or glimpse of me.) I'm broken away from my thoughts as the other two wolfs come back into view. A few minutes go by before they head back the way they came. I stay seated on the branch for about ten minutes before I decided to climb down and try to move away from the spot. It's risky to move at night since I can't fully shift but I can't risk waiting until day break. They would most likely come looking again during the day. I can't handle three wolfs right now. Only trained fully shifted wolfs can handle more than two wolfs and that's a struggle for them. I hit the ground and immediately do a partial shift. I take off running in the opposite direction trying to put more distance between us. Even with my vision I still stumble a couple times over some covered roots. After about twenty minutes of running I'm starting to feel safer so I slow my pace to a small jog. I glance around and don't notice anything out of the ordinary. However they were watching me, waiting for the perfect time to attack. MARKS P.O.V When the others came back and told me they hadn't found anyone and couldn't find a scent trail I was put on alarm. We had all smelled the intruder here at the camp site. She was a young wolf and she had been here for quite some time. I thought about our next plan of action for a moment before I mind linked the others. (She is still here so in order to weed her out we are going to circle back and sneak up on her. Make no noise whatsoever!) I hear them agree with my plan and follow me away from the area. Once we were a ways out we circled back and quietly re-approached. When we were a few yards away we waited. We had only been gone for about five minutes and we stayed crouched down for about four minutes when a young girl jumps down from the very tree I was standing under and partially shifts. She takes off running in the opposite direction we had originally left. (She was right above us for ten minutes while the others looked for her!) My wolf barked out. (I know shadow I know!) I huffed at my wolf. We followed behind her for a while until she slowed down. She had been running non stop for about twenty minutes. She never fully shifted so I assumed she was a young wolf who hasn't had her first shift yet. (We are not to kill yet. Capture for questioning.) I mind linked the others. This was going to be a unpredictable capturing and I didn't want any fatal damage done to us. We waited until she fully stopped before we all got in potion. We circled in around her before we pounced. I knocked her down which caused her to partially shift and claw at me. She picked herself up and scampered away from me to be meet by my other warrior, Ethan. She was obviously trying not to fully hurt us but was desperate to get away. I finally had enough of her little attempts and knocked her out. Her little body goes limp and she turns back to her human body. (We are taking her back to the pack. Pick her up and secure her.) I mind linked. We picked her up and tied her to Ethan's body. We all run back to our base where we take her to the cells. Unlike what you might have heard we don't have dungeons but cells. It isn't dark, damp or gross. A cell consist of a bunk, a toilet and a sink. They are in a building off from the pack house and highly secure. The metal bars are made from wolfs bane which as some of you may heard can kill a wolf. This is true if it a lot of it is consumed. It can weaken a wolf causing them to not be able to break through the bars. We lay her down on the bunk and lock her in the cell. Jace, our alpha is out on a pack meeting with the other leaders right now so when he gets back he will be able to decide what to do with her. In most cases we knock her out and move her far away from the pack grounds and erase our location from her memory. We do accept stray wolfs if they don't have anywhere to go and don't pose a threat to the pack. We lock her up and leave waiting for our alpha to return. CRYSTALS P.O.V I wake up what feels like day later and realize I'm in a cell. My head is hurting a bit from the attack from the other wolfs. When they attacked me I was startled and acted on reflex. I had held my own for a little while as I tried to escape but one of them caught me off guard and hit my over my head. I was sure I was dead as my vision started to fade. I don't know why they kept me a live or what they plan to do with me as I circle the cage. (Wolfs bane, danger. Danger, hurt wolf.) Summer, my wolf says. Our wolfs can't speak well until they find their mate. It's broken speech until they find and bond with their mates. Apparently the mate bond matures a wolf almost instantly. (Can we get out of here?) I ask her. All I see is her big wolf head shake and I hear (no, wolf bane strong, stronger than wolf.) I sigh feeling defeated. (What can we do if we can't break out of the cell? What will they do to us or make us do?) So many thoughts kept bouncing around in my mind. What feels like hours go by when someone comes I hear a door open and foot steps approach. " Ah, so your awake. I have to say I find that amazing for a young shifter." A tall skinny man states. He had short brown hair that hung around his ears and dark brown eyes. He stood to be at least six foot tall and although he seemed skinny, at closer look he was buff. " What do you plan on doing with me?" I ask fear lacing my words. He sighs and grabs the stool and sits down. " That will be up to our alpha when he returns. Until than you will remain in here." He states in a raspy tone. "Until than how about we get to know one another." He states watching me very closely. He never moved from the stool as he watched me for a moment pondering something. He scrunched his eye brows a couple times before he asks " what's your name?" I don't answer right off the bat wondering why he needed to know my name. After seeing that man be side my house I can't be sure who is there to help or hurt me. " What's your name?" I asked dodging his question. He chuckles at my tactic and say " My name is Mark, now can you tell me yours?" After a few minutes I respond " My name is crystal." He nods his head " Well, crystal until our alpha gets here you will stay in your cell. We don't believe in torture methods and as of right now you won't be killed." He states letting what he said sink in he's about to say something when he jumps out of his chair and runs out of the building. Shortly after he leaves I hear a bunch of yelling and screaming. This continues for a while until everything stops. I have an idea what had happened and I was worried sick about the results because if they were defeated was was good as dead. The door to the building opens and I hear the slow tapping of someone walking up the hall. I slowly back myself up in to a corner afraid to see a hideous rouge about to emerge. When marks limping body comes in to focus I sigh in relief. I noticed that most the blood isn't his and that there aren't any major signs of injury. " Are you ok?" I ask I a small squeaky voice. He chuckles and plops down on the stool. "Are you worried about me?" I cross my arms and huff. He chuckles again before he states " I'm fine, just fractured my ankle during the attack. It will be fine in a couple hours." We sat in silence until I gave in a bit. " I come from a small pack north of here. My pack was killed and I have no where else to go. I was passing through when we bumped in to each other." I decided if I left it at that it would ease their minds a bit and we could come to an agreement. I didn't want to go in to detail about how they died or about the man I saw. He was about to say something when he just smiles. " The alpha has returned so we will be seeing about what to do here soon." He states before walking out of the building.
