Harry POV
“I apologize for abandoning the perimeter search Alpha. I just couldn’t trust a warrior to bring her back her” I started immediately after the door was closed.
“Stop, Harry. You’re my gamma, you found an injured child and wanted to protect her. I’d be more worried if you had pushed her off on anyone else. “He said with a small smile. Alpha Nolan and I had grown up together. Along with our Beta, Adrian. However, I was the only one without a child of my own. I was often the butt of jokes because of it.
“Were there any survivors?” I asked getting back to being serious. Scarlett had been screaming for her mother. I needed to know if there was any chance, she had survived the attacks. I needed to know if I was going to have to break that girl’s heart even more so.
“No. Not that we can tell anyway. There were roughly twenty homes attacked last night. Our guess is the collective that attacked had targeted these houses on purpose. Unfortunately, all the houses attacked were loners. Wolves not belonging to a pack but not rogues either. That makes it harder because we don’t have records. “He explained.
“So, what now? All we know is this girl wants her mother who is most likely dead. And her name is Scarlett. “I said with annoyance.
“This is just a thought. And forgive me if I’m speaking out of turn, Alpha, Gamma… But perhaps until we find more information, Gamma Harry and his mate Lucille, could watch over the girl?” Dr. Grace spoke up boldly.
Alpha Nolan didn’t correct the doctor for speaking out of turn. He hadn’t sent her away because he needed all the information he could gather. “I mean it would be unusual, but being she doesn’t belong to a pack, I agree she would be safest staying with Shadow Moon. Until we could find a relative.”
“I…” I started stumbling a bit. I felt connected to the girl, I wanted to protect her. I would need to speak to Lucille. We had been trying for a pup for some time, but to take on a pup without asking her would land me in all sorts of trouble. “I agree she is safest at Shadow Moon, Alpha. As far as staying with me, I would need to discuss it with Lucille and with Scarlett. The child has been through enough without us forcing more on her.” I said with determination.
Alpha Nolan nodded in understanding. “I would expect no less, but we need to make a decision quickly, or she will need to go to one of the orphanages. I suggest you mind link Lucille and discuss this with her immediately.”
I was surprised he didn’t command it. He could have. Thankfully, Alpha Nolan, respected us enough to allow us the freedom of choice more than not. “I’ll go discuss it with her immediately. Then I will bring her down to meet Scarlett. We’ll have an answer for you by dinner, Alpha.”
Dr. Grace nodded at the same time as Nolan did. She turned back to the room, and back to us once more. “Alpha, Gamma, I would like to keep her here in the meantime to monitor and assess. We need to be certain she doesn’t have any unseen injuries.” With that she excused herself and headed back to treat other patients.
Alpha Nolan offered me a smile and placed his hand on my shoulder. “I understand this is a big ask. I also know of your struggles with having a pup of your own. You’re like my brother. I just want to see you guys happy, and perhaps, this could help make your family feel full. But the decision is entirely yours. I won’t force it on you or Lucille.”
I nodded. He knew all too well the pain Lucille, and I had suffered over the years. We’ve been trying for a pup for nearly 5 years now. We were only 23, we found out we were mates in our senior year of high school. So we had plenty of time, but watching all of our friends have children often left us feeling empty. Like the moon goddess was punishing us for some unknown reason. I left the pack hospital to go find Lucille up in our quarters. Perhaps, this was the moon goddess’ plan the entire time. I just hoped Lucille would agree. I couldn’t stand the thought of sending that poor girl to an orphanage.
