Harry POV
“Are you f*****g kidding me?! She’s not only an alpha, but you’re also telling me that she’s the only surviving member of the Stone River Pack?” I was practically yelling at Nolan sitting in front of me. He had finally filled us in more thoroughly on what was discovered with further investigation.
Every pack in the area new the story. About five years ago there were so many rogue wars happening. No one had any idea exactly how many wolves lost their lives in them. The worst of it though happened to the Stone River pack. Everyone had believed for years that no one survived. The rogues had fought dirty. Led by some rejected, banished Alpha. Most only knew of him as the rogue king. He kept his identity hidden. He had his rogue followers attack the pack from all angles while someone snuck passed all the warriors and placed bombs. The packhouse, and all the panic rooms in it were demolished. There was no way there could have been any survivors.
It was the greatest tragedy this territory had ever heard of. There were rumors that the Luna had been with child. Harry raked his hands through his hair trying to remember more. He’d only just turned 18 when the attacks happened. It couldn’t be possible, could it?
“Harrison! Listen to me. It adds up okay. This picture “he shoved it back into my face “was found in the home closest to where Scarlett was discovered. Do you see her eyes? Her hair? They’ve got to be related. It doesn’t make sense. It was by far the most secluded home out of the recent raids.”
I stared at the picture. My eyes scanning over the woman in the photo. She had the same hazel green eyes. Her hair was darker, but still a soft blonde shade. If I looked at it long enough, I could almost see Scarlett’s button nose. He was right. This had to be Scarlett’s mother. “Nolan, if she had survived why didn’t she seek asylum from one of the other packs though? Why would she live in some tiny cottage in the middle of the woods?” I groaned loudly holding my head in my hands.
“Everyone has always said the attack on Stone River was retaliation. For what at this point I can’t be sure. I can assume if we’re right, if this is in fact Luna Gentry, and we have her daughter that we must do everything in our power to keep her hidden. If the Luna didn’t seek asylum, she had good reason to keep herself and her daughter hidden. We need to honor that. We need to keep Scarlett safe. “. Alpha Nolan stood up crossing his arms and scanning the room. “No one can know of this. Not even our mates. Especially Scarlett. We must keep her secret. “
I nodded standing up as well and extending my hand to Alpha Nolan. “I understand, Alpha. Scarlett will be raised as a gamma child. She’ll take on the Blake name, and no one will know where she was discovered. We’ll tell everyone my mate and I adopted from one of the orphanages.” I didn’t like the lie, but it would be necessary. If someone really was after the pup’s mother, they would likely be after her as well and It was my duty to ensure that child’s safety.
Beta Adrian had stayed silent for the majority of my outburst. He stood now with us and nodded. “Goddess Bless that child.” He was a man of few words especially in serious situations. However, it felt right. She had been blessed. She managed to escape in extreme conditions and somehow found her way onto our pack land and to a spot where she would remain safe at least for that night. At only five years old.
Scarlett was without a doubt blessed. Someone was watching out for her. Now that the task had passed on to be I’d have to do the same. “Is it safe to assume that all we know is where her blood line originates?” I asked wanting to be certain that I had all of the information.
“Yes, that’s all my team gathered from the home. We found the picture and I recognized her from one of the Alpha Summits.” Adrian explained. I didn’t even think of that. They would have recognized the Luna. She would have traveled with her husband to the summit that year before the tragedy took place. It was common for the Beta’s and Luna’s to join the Alpha. Rarely did us Gamma’s attend, we usually looked after the pack during them.
The three of us parted ways. I made my way out of the Alpha quarters on the topmost floor, passed the Beta’s and finally the third floor down to the Gamma quarters. I wanted to see how much the omegas had accomplished on Scarlett’s room. I walked down the hallway pleased to see a couple of young male omegas assembling a white 4 poster bed in the once empty room. They really had made short work of making this room more child friendly. A couple young women were arranging some clothes that looked to be about Scarlett’s size in the closet and dresser.
“Thank you all for getting this together so quickly. Lucille and I had no idea we would be bringing home our daughter so soon. “I spoke clearly with intent. I wanted to be certain that the story of adoption started to spread among the pack. The easiest way to do that was through omegas and their gossip line of telephone.
I turned on my heel and walked down the hall further to the main living quarters to find Lucille. While she couldn’t know the whole story, because the Alpha had commanded it, she did need to know the story of how we came to adopt Scarlett. I would fill her in on that and justify it as a precaution since we have no idea where she came from. To avoid gossip and prying eyes from the pack. It would have to do. I didn’t really have any other option. Too many people already knew who Scarlett really was. It was now my job to protect that child as though she were my own. To ensure whatever dark force came after her mother couldn’t find her as well. This would be my burden to bear.
