The doctor enters, her eyes scanning my body and injuries, an empathetic twinkle in her gaze. She takes a quick observation, seeing the mess and destruction, tension clenching her shoulders. “Hello, Avery, is it?” She whispers, her voice soft, and delicate. “I’m Dr. Julia Harper.”
“Dr. Harper? As in Jude Harper?” I ask, tilting my head, staring her down, not seeing the family resemblance. Then again, I look nothing like Jackson. Hell, Davina looks more like him than I do. So what do I know about genetics?. “Are you his wife?”
“God, no, and lord help the woman who catches his attention.” She bursts with laughter, the room filled with the lightness of it, and I can’t help but smile. “He’s my cousin, but in this room that doesn’t matter. Your safety does. Are you safe here?”
