9 I did everything I could to avoid James and O’Kelley’s for the next week. The last thing I needed was Piper, or anyone else, thinking anything was happening between James and me. Piper didn’t come to girls’ night that weekend either, so it was even better. But it left me feeling off. I couldn’t get her words out of my head, and I couldn’t stop dreaming about James. All night I imagined him climbing into bed with me and burning up the sheets together. During the day, I pushed thoughts of him ruthlessly out of my mind, but the number of times I had to do so was alarming. Like five alarm fire alarming.
