Chapter 12: The Offer

1273 Words
Selena sat on the edge of the bed, her body tense, heart pounding with anxiety. The unfamiliar room around her felt suffocating, as though the walls were closing in. She was still trying to wrap her head around the fact that she had been taken—by Mark Adrian Gallo, no less. Her mind raced with possible ways to escape, but deep down, she knew there wasn’t much she could do. Mark was powerful, influential, and incredibly determined. She was in his world now, trapped by circumstances that had spun wildly out of her control. Her stomach growled, a sharp reminder that she hadn’t eaten since the event last night. The knot of hunger twisted with the tension inside her, making her feel nauseous. She had barely slept, fear gnawing at her as she lay in the massive bed, constantly listening for any sound that might signal Mark’s return. As if on cue, the door creaked open, and there he was. Mark walked in with an unsettling calmness, carrying a tray in his hands. The aroma of food filled the room, making her realize just how weak and starved she was. The tray held a delicate stack of Japanese pancakes, fluffy and golden, along with a tall glass of milk. His eyes flickered over her, reading her like a book. “You didn’t eat last night, so I thought you’d like something light.” Selena said nothing, her mouth dry, her throat tight with apprehension. She could feel his presence, towering over her, radiating an authority that she had no way to challenge. “I’m not going to hurt you, Selena,” Mark said, his tone softening, as if trying to reassure her. “You need to eat.” She hesitated, but her hunger won out. Slowly, she reached for the fork, her hands trembling slightly. The first bite of the pancake was like a relief—soft, sweet, and warm. She hadn’t realized just how starved she was until that moment, and for a few seconds, she let herself focus on the food, trying to block out everything else. But Mark’s presence remained, looming over her thoughts. Once she had eaten a few more bites, Mark spoke again, his voice calm but insistent. “We need to talk.” Selena swallowed, setting down the fork. She had known this was coming—whatever game Mark was playing, it wasn’t over yet. Her hands rested in her lap, her fingers clutching the hem of the blanket as if it could somehow shield her from what was coming next. “I know you’re afraid,” Mark began, pulling a chair over and sitting down across from her. “But this doesn’t have to be as bad as you think. You see, you’ve put yourself in a very dangerous situation, Selena. But I’m offering you a way out.” Her gaze flickered up to his, cautious, searching for any sign of deception. “What do you want?” she asked quietly, her voice hoarse. Mark leaned back slightly in his chair, his expression unreadable. “My grandfather believes you’re pregnant with my child,” he said, each word deliberate. “He was overjoyed at the news. It’s the one thing he’s been waiting for—an heir. He doesn’t have much time left, and this… this lie, as dangerous as it was for you to create, gave him something to hold onto. Now, I have to decide how to handle it.” Selena’s stomach churned. She knew where this was going, and she wasn’t ready to hear it. But Mark didn’t stop. “I’m giving you other options,” We continue with the lie for now—you pretend to be pregnant. We announce our engagement to keep my grandfather happy, and then, over time, we stage a miscarriage. You’ll lose the baby, and my grandfather will be heartbroken, but it’ll give him time to come to terms with it.” Selena felt a chill run down her spine. It was a calculated plan, cruel in its precision. The idea of lying further, of manipulating a man’s emotions like that, made her sick to her stomach. But what choice did she have? “You want me to pretend to lose a baby that never existed?” she asked, her voice thick with disbelief. Mark didn’t flinch. “It’s better than the alternative. You’ve already put yourself in this position. I’m offering you a way out that doesn’t involve ruining your life any more than it already is. Think about it, Selena—if my grandfather finds out you lied, he won’t be the only one coming after you. The media will tear you apart, and the scandal will follow you for the rest of your life.” His words hit her like a slap. She had known this was bad, but hearing it laid out so clearly made the full weight of the situation settle on her shoulders. She felt trapped, cornered with no escape. “I can’t do this,” she whispered, shaking her head. Mark’s jaw tightened. He leaned forward, his eyes locking onto hers with a fierce intensity. “You don’t have much of a choice, Selena. You’ve already made a mess of things. If you hadn’t stormed into my wedding with that insane story, we wouldn’t be in this situation.” Selena’s heart pounded, her mind racing. He was right—she had done this. But it had never been about Mark, or his grandfather. She had only been trying to help Oliver, to protect him from the consequences of his messy breakup with Vivian. But now, she was paying the price for it. Tears stung the corners of her eyes, but she blinked them away. She couldn’t afford to break down, not here, not in front of him. Mark watched her closely, his gaze unwavering. “I know this isn’t what you want,” he said, his voice softer now, almost sympathetic. “But I’m giving you a way to fix it. We can make this work, Selena. You won’t have to face the consequences alone. But you need to make a decision.” Selena’s chest tightened. The weight of his offer hung heavy in the air, suffocating her. She couldn’t marry him—she couldn’t tie herself to a man she didn’t love, a man who had kidnapped her and was now manipulating her into further lies. But the alternative was no better. Lying to his grandfather, stringing him along with false hope, only to devastate him later—it was cruel. “I… I don’t know,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Mark stood, his movements slow and deliberate. He walked over to the window, staring out into the distance, as if giving her space to think. “I’ll give you some time,” he said, his back still turned to her. “But don’t take too long. My grandfather isn’t going to wait forever for an engagement announcement.” He turned back to face her, his eyes cold but determined. “Make the right choice, Selena. I’ll be back later.” With that, Mark left the room, the door closing behind him with a soft click. Selena stared at the closed door, her mind reeling. She was trapped in a web of lies and manipulation, with no clear way out. Her only options were both devastating, and the weight of the decision pressed down on her like a crushing force. She had to decide. But no matter what choice she made, ther e was no escaping the fact that her life was no longer her own.
