Chapter 7: Unexpected Encounter

Selena clutched her glass tightly, her knuckles white as she took a deep breath. The weight of the evening pressed down on her as she sat at the bar, the tension in the air palpable. She could feel Mark’s presence like a magnet in the corner of her eye, and it made her heart race with a mixture of excitement and fear. The last thing she wanted was for him to recognize her after the chaotic scene she had caused at his wedding. “Are you sure you’re okay?” Miranda asked, her brow furrowed with concern. “You seem a bit on edge.” Selena forced a smile, grateful for her friend’s care. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just… a little overwhelmed from everything today. I think I should head home. I have an important appointment tomorrow.” Miranda frowned slightly but nodded in understanding. “Alright, if you’re sure. We’ll definitely catch up soon, though! I can’t wait to hear about your upcoming collection.” “Absolutely. I promise,” Selena replied, her heart pounding as she stood up from her stool. As she walked toward the exit, she kept her gaze downcast, her mind racing with thoughts of how to navigate this precarious situation. She couldn’t let Mark see her—couldn’t let him put the pieces together. But as she stepped into the bar’s dimly lit hallway, her heart sank at the realization that she was heading straight for him. In her distracted state, Selena failed to notice someone approaching from the opposite direction. Just as she turned the corner, she bumped into a solid chest, the impact causing her to stumble back slightly. “I’m so sorry!” she exclaimed frantically, her voice filled with panic as she looked up. To her horror, she found herself staring into the familiar hazel eyes of Mark Adrian Gallo. Time seemed to freeze as she registered the shock on his face, his expression a mixture of confusion and curiosity. “Wait—” he started, but Selena’s instincts kicked in. “I’m really sorry!” she blurted again, this time the words tumbling out as she quickly turned and dashed toward the exit. “Stop!” Mark called after her, his voice cutting through the din of the bar. But Selena couldn’t stop. She felt a rush of adrenaline surge through her as she pushed through the bar’s door and into the parking lot. The cool night air hit her like a splash of cold water, and she sprinted toward her car, her heart pounding in her chest. She fumbled for her keys, desperately trying to maintain her composure as she glanced over her shoulder to see if Mark was following her. He was, and the urgency in his stride only heightened her panic. “Wait!” he shouted again, desperation lacing his voice. As she unlocked her car door and practically threw herself inside, her hands were shaking. The engine roared to life, but before she could pull out of the parking space, she caught sight of Mark striding toward her, determination etched across his handsome features. “Wait!” he called again, his tone more insistent now. For a moment, she hesitated, her foot hovering over the accelerator. But the weight of her deception loomed large, and fear overpowered her curiosity. She couldn’t let him in; she couldn’t allow him to unravel the tangled web of lies she had spun. With a sharp intake of breath, she pressed the accelerator and sped out of the parking lot, the sound of Mark’s voice fading into the distance. As she drove away, her heart pounded in her chest—not just from the fear of being recognized, but from the thrill of their brief encounter. The world outside blurred as she raced through the city streets, her mind replaying the moments from the bar. She couldn’t shake the image of Mark’s eyes, wide with confusion, and the way he had called after her. “Why did I run?” she whispered to herself, gripping the steering wheel tightly. “What’s wrong with me?” But as the adrenaline subsided, reality came crashing back. She had made a mess of things, and now she was in deeper than ever. The chaos of that wedding day hung over her like a dark cloud, and the truth loomed larger than ever. When she finally pulled into her driveway, the weight of the evening settled heavily on her shoulders. She parked her car, still feeling the rush of the encounter coursing through her veins. As she stepped inside her home, the silence enveloped her, and she let out a deep breath. She sank onto her couch, the weight of her emotions crashing over her like a tidal wave. What had started as a reckless plan to help Oliver had spiraled into something far more complicated. Now she was entangled in a web of deception, and the man at the center of it all was undeniably captivating. Selena grabbed her phone, her fingers hovering over the screen as she contemplated reaching out to Oliver. She needed to talk about what had happened—needed to find a way to make sense of everything. But the thought of discussing Mark filled her with dread. She glanced at the time, realizing it was getting late. With a sigh, she placed her phone down, deciding to give herself a moment to breathe. She couldn’t think straight; her mind was still racing with memories of Mark’s gaze, the way he had looked at her in the bar. The ringing of her phone pulled her from her thoughts, and she sat up, her heart racing. It was Oliver. “Hey,” she answered, trying to sound casual. “Hey! I just wanted to check in and see how you’re doing,” he said, his voice laced with concern. “Did everything go okay?” Selena hesitated, unsure of how to even begin to explain. “Yeah, um… it was fine. Just a little chaotic.” “Chaotic? More chaotic than your usual chaos?” he teased, but she could hear the worry in his tone. “Let’s just say I didn’t make any friends at that wedding,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “Did something happen?” Oliver pressed, sensing her hesitation. “I ran into that guy from the wedding,” she admitted, her heart racing at the thought. “And I panicked. I didn’t know what to do, so I just ran.” “Selena, you have to be careful,” he warned, his tone serious. “You know this could blow up in your face.” “I know, I know!” she replied, frustration creeping into her voice. “But I just… I couldn’t face him. I couldn’t let him recognize me.” “Have you thought about what’s going to happen next? You can’t just hide from this,” Oliver urged. Selena sighed, feeling the weight of her friend’s words. “I don’t know, Oliver. I never planned for this to get so complicated.” “Then let’s figure it out together,” he said, his voice softening. “You’re not in this alone.” As Selena hung up, she felt a flicker of hope amidst the chaos. With Oliver by her side, she could find a way through this tangled mess. But as she sat in the silence of her home, she knew that the storm was far from over. The next day would bring new challenges, and the specter of Mark Adrian Gallo loomed large in her mind. She had crossed a line, and there was no turning back now. With that thought, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever lay ahead. The game was just beginning, and she would need all her courage to face it.
