Test &The Breaking Point

613 Words
Mia’s POV My hands wouldn’t stop shaking as I stared at the pregnancy test on the marble bathroom counter. Two bright pink lines stared back at me. Positive. I was pregnant with Damien Voss’s child. The anonymous message had guided me straight to the tests hidden in the cabinet. My body still carried traces of last night’s passion, and now that passion had created a life inside me. Fear and a strange, terrifying warmth twisted together in my chest. “Oh god…” I whispered, sliding down the cold wall until I sat on the floor, knees pulled to my chest. I was carrying the baby of a man I barely knew — a man who could be dangerous. The penthouse door slammed open. Heavy footsteps echoed through the suite. “Mia!” Damien’s voice was sharp with urgency. I quickly hid the test in my robe pocket and stepped out. He looked exhausted and fierce — bruised knuckles, torn collar, eyes stormy. Before I could speak, he pulled me into his arms and kissed me hard, almost desperately, as if he needed to reassure himself I was still there. “You’re safe,” he growled against my lips. “I made sure of it.” “Damien… what happened at the club?” I asked as he held me close. “Later.” He led me to the bed, his touch urgent but gentler than usual. We came together in a heated rush, his body claiming mine with deep, possessive intensity. For those moments, the world outside disappeared. Afterward, we lay tangled together, breathing hard. My heart pounded as I reached into my robe pocket and pulled out the test with trembling fingers. “Damien… I’m pregnant.” He went completely still. Slowly, he took the test from my hand and stared at the two pink lines. Shock, raw possession, and something almost like fear crossed his face. “Already?” A low growl rumbled in his chest. He placed a hand gently on my lower belly. “Good. This changes everything.” For one fragile moment, he kissed me softly, his touch almost reverent as he stroked my stomach. Tears stung my eyes. In that instant, he didn’t feel like a monster — he felt like someone who might truly care. Then his phone rang. He answered on speaker, still holding me close. Harrington’s smug voice came through. “Congratulations on the quick news, Voss. But your father-in-law hired the hit on me. Pay what you owe or I’ll make sure both of you go down for attempted murder.” Damien’s hand tightened protectively on my belly. After the call ended, his voice turned rough. “Two years ago, I lost a woman named Sophia. She was pregnant with my child… and Harrington was responsible. That’s why I needed this contract. Why I demanded an heir so fast. But you, Mia… you’re becoming more than just a contract to me.” My heart clenched. I wanted desperately to believe him. Then my phone buzzed on the nightstand. Unknown: Damien killed Sophia. Check the sealed files in his private safe tonight. The truth will destroy your marriage before it even begins. Damien read the message over my shoulder. His entire body tensed with fury. “Someone is playing a very dangerous game with us,” he growled, pulling me tighter against him. “And when I find out who… I’ll make them pay.” He kissed me again — deep and possessive — but as his arms wrapped around me, one terrifying question consumed my thoughts: Was I falling in love with the man who might have murdered his last pregnant lover?
