Chapter 26
Freybelle’s POV
“Good Evening Freybelle.” A melodic voice greeted me, and I recognised Merena, the woman who had been in my mind before.
“Hello.” I said, looking around for Blaze like before but realising she was alone this time. “Where is Blaze?” I asked.
“He is asleep, with Nathan. I didn’t want to wake him.” She said and with a wave of her hand a table and chairs appeared. She signalled for me to sit down, and I did.
“So… What do you want with me?” I asked causing her to laugh a small titter.
“It’s not what I want but what you want.” I looked at her confused. “I am here about the bond between you and Nathan. You are not alone in having this.” I looked at her with even more confusion than before.
“What do you mean?” I asked, looking at her puzzled.
“I mean there are others who share a bond, with people, who aren’t their fated mate. I presume you’ve been reading up on the mate bond that werewolves, vampires and other mythical creatures have?” I nodded and she continued. “Well Nathan isn’t your fated mate, you’ve created a bond instead.”
“Whats the difference?” I asked.
“A mate bond is something created by Selene, the moon goddess. It was created to ensure that the lineage within werewolves, dragons, fairies etc was pure and kept them strong. Vampires inherited it through an extremely powerful witch when she harnessed the goddess’s power but that’s a story for another time. Witches do have a mate bond, but it isn’t called the same. It’s called the soulmate principal but as they are rarely found it has died out over time. You will have a fated soulmate out there somewhere.” I nodded along having read about it but there was little wrote about it. “Well, when my sister, Selene, got a little…. To big for her boots, I was created to watch over that bond. I wasn’t happy with how people were treated within it and…” I could feel sadness emanating from her and I realised I could sense even a goddess’s emotions “Something terrible happened and I broke the mate bond spell she had placed upon her people. I made it so the bond could be created with anyone. However, it is only happening to a select few people right now as my powers are weak. This bond you feel with Nathan is real but its created with my power and between you both. Having seen two other couples deal with it so far, I can tell you that if a fated mate comes along you both will feel that pull too.”
“Oh… so Nathan could still find his fated mate?” She nodded sadly.
“This bond you have is because you care deeply for each other, and I am glad it happened. You seem to need each other and whilst your fated mates could also make you stronger you are different together.” I nodded, not fully understanding what she was saying but it did make sense.
“So, we do have a mate bond but not the original bond?” She nodded. “So, what does that mean moving forwards? How do we make this bond real?”
“I am trying to communicate with the other but the only way I can see is for you all to make a choice. The choice is to be made all together, and you need to decide whether to keep the original mate bond or this new way of finding your own mates?”
“Just like humans?” She nodded again. I frowned. The way Nathan spoke about the bond was sacred and I doubt he would want to give that up, but then again if he truly loved me would he want to keep this bond between us, knowing it was different?
“How do we meet these other people?” I asked.
“I will show you, but not tonight. I believe you have unfinished business, and it will bring you and Nathan closer together. You need to finish this before I can guide you.” I nodded. Merena began getting up and the dream or vision, whatever it was, began to get foggy and blurry.
“Merena?” I asked before she could disappear. “If youre Selene’s sister, how comes no one has heard of you before? What happened?”
“Oh, sweet one, that’s a story for another day but believe me when I say that Selene wanted no one to find out about me.” I bit my lip as she disappeared, and I was instantly transported back into the real world and into a peaceful sleep.
Nathan’s POV
Id been awake for a few minutes, listening to Frey mumble under her breath. She didn’t seem in distress, but she also wasn’t enjoying whatever her dream was about. I left her to it until she went silent then I slowly kissed her, hoping to rouse her from her sleep. She looked peaceful but I knew she would want to document whatever she had dreamt about.
“Nathan…” She said, rubbing her eyes. “What time is it?” I smiled.
“Its only 6am, but I heard you stirring and thought id wake you.” She smiled and reached for me so I could hug her to me. “You were dreaming.” I said as I pulled her into my chest.
“Oh… yeah…” She said, her body getting tense.
“Is everything ok?” I asked and she nodded.
“I spoke to the goddess again. She…” She bit her lip.
“Tell me.” I said, gently.
“She told me about our bond… She says it isn’t the real mate bond.” I saw her close her eyes as if in anticipation for something.
“Ok, what does that mean?” I asked, pulling her closer to me, giving her reassurance to whatever it was she was worrying about.
“Ok well…” She sat up and drew her legs under her chin. I sat up to, positioning myself, cross legged, so I could face her. “She says she is the moon goddess’ sister, and she was created by her to watch over the mate bond in werewolves. She didn’t go into details, but she said something happened which caused her to create a different bond, meaning people could choose a mate instead but still feel the bond. She says that’s what we have but that it’s just as special as the actual bond. Theres’s others affected too and we need to come together to make it more permanent or to get the old bond back. I… I understand if you want to find your real mate.” I looked at her with a furrowed brow.
“You are my real mate…” She went to say something, but I cut her off. “I haven’t found my ‘real’ mate in years. The bond I feel with you now is to me, the real bond. If we created it, then that only means we care for each other. I understand why we have fated mates, but I think we make each other stronger. Don’t we?” I meant everything I said. I wasn’t holding out hope to finding my fated mate and I was perfectly happy with a chosen mate if that’s what she was. She was different in many ways, but I was realising that was a good thing for us both.
“You aren’t even curious?” She asked.
“I can’t deny that I would be intrigued to see who the goddess chose for me, but whose to say it wouldn’t be you?” I asked and she smiled. “What about you? Doest that mean there’s someone out there especially for you?” She nodded. “And?”
“I feel the same as you. I love you, Nathan.”
“There you go then. So, what happens next?”
“She told me we need to deal with this first then she will guide us to the next steps. I assume we need to meet each other to make a decision about the bond.” I nodded, that made sense. It didn’t bother me either way except for a few further questions. Frey was looking at me oddly.
“What?” She shrugged.
“I don’t know, I guess I just expected more questions and a different reaction.” She said, nervously playing with her hands.
“I must admit I have questions, but they aren’t ones you can answer. Like, what happens if we choose to get rid of the fated mate bond. Will all mates lose their bond, or will it be strong enough to continue as a chosen one? Will all the packs be affected…” She sighed and smiled.
“Well, I guess we figure that out after Ive confronted my mother.” She said, smiling and I put my hands on her knees, extremely aware that we were both still naked and we had a full week before we needed to be back within the pack to complete the healing ritual and head out. She laughed before leaning forwards and kissing me.
