Chapter 10
Freybelle’s POV
I was wondering deep down about what he said, part of me hoped it wasn’t what I thought it was but there was also a part of me that was excited too. Riding on the back of the wolf seemed both exciting and terrifying all at once. We had walked through the town, gathering a few supplies we needed for the cabin, and we had discussed getting me more clothes. However, Nathan had said we could call to get them before we headed back to his pack. He had bought me a set of PJs and some more underwear though. Seeing his face turn red as I bought them had made me laugh again before I turned sour at our conversation earlier.
“Are you ready?” I heard Nathan ask as we reached the edge of town. I nodded, still not 100% sure what I was supposed to be ready for but nervous anticipation growing in my chest. I knew my thoughts were right as soon as Nathan walked behind some bushes and began taking his clothes up. He folded them before throwing them at me to put in the backpack I was wearing.
“So, I just get on?” I asked as Blaze walked towards me. He nodded and I smiled, highly amused that a wolf could understand me. I knew they were different, but I had only ever encountered real wolves. I made sure the backpack was secure on my shoulders before throwing a leg over the already laid down wolf. I wasn’t sure where to grab so I settled on holding some of his neck hair. I heard a gruff and he shrugged me off. He then twisted his shoulders as if telling me to hold there. I leant down and grabbed the hair on his shoulders, but he shrugged again, making me nearly fall. I instinctively grabbed around his neck with a little scream. That seemed to please Blaze as he made a sound like a gruff before setting off. I held on tighter.
“Wow!” I laughed out loud as I felt the wind pelting my face. The scenery was blazing past me in a blur, and I realised we were going fast. Maybe that’s why hes called blaze, I thought to myself. As I became more confident, I sat up higher. I was still holding his neck but no longer lying flat on him. I would put pressure on his shoulders if I felt like he needed to turn in a specific direction and he ran through the forest as quick as a flash.
Nathan’s POV
This is really awkward. I grumbled to Blaze as we both felt the tingles of the mate bond shooting through our back.
But pleasant. He replied and I knew he was enjoying every second of having Freybelle on our back. We did move in incredible synchronicity once she got her confidence.
Imagine her riding skills elsewhere if you enjoy this. Blaze growled in a playful tone, and I was glad he was in charge right now as I would absolutely have tripped over at that comment. I didn’t dignify him with an answer, mostly because the thought had crossed my mind too.
“It’s about another mile in this direction.” I heard Freybelle shout and Blaze barked an answer to her. After about a half mile Blaze slowed down and let me beck to the front so I could guide us there slowly. After Freybelle escaped there was little doubt in my mind that they would still be around, but I wanted to be cautious. I laid down, signalling her to get off and I raced behind some more bushed to change.
You should let her see us naked, she would swoon into our arms. Blaze growled with lust in my mind as I transformed back and dressed quickly. Freybelle had throw my clothes onto the bush for me. We slowly made our way forwards and I heard Freybelle muttering words behind us. I didn’t know how, but I knew they were words of protection.
“Are we close?” I whispered and she nodded, I could see fear in her eyes, and I glanced at her sadly before continuing forwards. I felt bad for her, she was returning to the place she had lost her best friend, her entire family and nearly her life. “You don’t have to come with me you know.” I said.
“I do.” She answered flatly and I wondered if she needed some closure by seeing the place. As we approached it was clear the settlement was empty but here were signs that there had been life here only days before. Part of me was kicking myself that they had been so close to me, but another was glad that they had moved on before I did something stupid and that Freybelle had managed to escape. We stopped crouching but walked slowly towards the campfire in the middle. Freybelle grabbed my arm as we moved closer, and I saw remnants of a body.
“George…” I whispered in question, but she shook her head.
“He was burned up by the black fire, there would be…” a gulp. “Only ashes left if anything.” I nodded and pushed her behind me.
“Stay behind me.” I whispered again as we moved slowly forwards, she did so, grabbing the bottom of my t-shirt. There weren’t signs of houses anywhere, only a dishevelled tent and an unkempt garden patch as well as littered food remnants and a few pages of torn books. As we got closer, I felt Freybelle stiffen before she finally ran around me. “Frey!” I shouted in anger. I shot forwards after her, surprised at her speed. However, when I reached her, she was already at the body.
“Good!” I heard her say with more venom than I had heard from her and then she spat, yes spat on the body. I looked at the feminine figure but was took aback by the black eyes. Then I noticed the grey hair which seemed to be falling from the body and then the black veins snaking all over her body.
“Frey…” I started but then realised who it must be. “Your grandmother?” I asked.
“Don’t call her that.” She turned on me, an orange flash in her eyes before she softened. “Sorry!” She said immediately before turning away and examining the area around her.
“I…” I didn’t know what to say so I just followed her around the campfire, sniffing the air for remnants of the coven or for anything I could to use as a marker.
“Nathan!” I heard Freybelle shout, and she picked up something small and shiny. I tilted my head at her. “It’s one of my mother’s gems from a necklace I have never see her take off. I can track her with it.” She smiled and I looked at her in awe.
“Really?” I questioned, trying to contain my… excitement. I wasn’t sure that was the emotion I was feeling but it felt similar. She nodded, her smile widening.
“This will help, right?” She asked and her face was that of a child, looking for praise after doing well at school. I frowned, before putting my hand on her head.
“Absolutely.” She smiled brightly then did something I hadn’t expected. She wrapped her arms around my waist and hugged me.
“Good… I want to make things right.” I slowly put my arms around her shoulders and hugged her back. The warmth from her heating me and the tingles from our contact coursing through us. Suddenly Freybelle pulled back and faced away from me, but I could see her ears turning a shade of red.
Freybelle’s POV
I had to move away from Nathan’s body. I don’t know why I had felt the urge to hug him, but this seemed like a win. I placed the gem into my pocket, still aware that my face and probably entire body was red. His body had felt safe and warm and there were tingles that shot straight into my stomach. Like cold water over a burn or the feeling of fire licking at my fingers as I handle it with my magic.
“We should head back.” I heard Nathan say. I nodded, wishing I could have a few more minutes to recover but I had noticed the sky turning a darker shade of blue. I was confused as to how I was feeling these things called the mate spark when witches didn’t have mates. I vowed to research it as soon as I could, maybe Nathan’s pack had a library.
We got back to the cabin just as the sun set and Nathan set about making food with the supplies we had bought from town. He was making a hearty chicken and vegetable soup with homemade bread. I sighed, smelling the aroma as it cooked and my stomach rumbling ridiculously loud.
“It will be ready soon, go wash up.” Nathan said, his usual gruff tone. I nodded, not really sure what to say now we were back at the cabin. The last time we had been here we had argued, and I knew Nathan was feeling it too. He was radiating awkwardness. “I’m sorry.” I heard him say as I opened the bathroom door, cradling my pyjamas.
“For what?” I asked, genuinely curious.
“For saying you weren’t showing your anger. I saw it earlier…” He said and he looked and felt worried.
“I told you… I don’t bottle things ups. I just release them as I need them.” He nodded but I felt he was holding back something. “What?”
“Well… I felt power within you, rising to the surface when you displayed your disgust earlier. When I referred to… well you know.” I nodded, not sure what he was getting at. “I saw the power very slightly in your eyes and it was, frightening…” He said and I was shocked.
“What do you mean?” I asked, feeling sick.
“I don’t know, almost like anger fuels your powers and would make it ten times worse if you ever burst.” I had to hold back my worry. I nodded.
“Well, I don’t get angry often, so you’re safe.” I joked before quickly locking myself into the bathroom. My breathing was shallow, and I sat on the floor with my head in my hands. My dream… could it come true? Had it been a vision, not a simple dream?
