Chapter 12

Chapter 12 Freybelle’s POV To say I was nervous was an understatement. I had only ever met one werewolf before and obviously that was Nathan. We had spent the day tidying the cabin, shopping for supplies and generally chatting about the pack. Nathan had told me about his Luna and Alpha, about the Beta and some of the other wolves. Luna Sylvia and Alpha Fenn were in charge. They rule the Steel Thistle pack with care but also rules and regulations. He told me what they looked like so I could tell it was them and also how to conduct myself in front of them. Whilst they had no power over me and my actions it would still be good for me to follow some orders and show respect. He then filled me in on the packs Beta. I could feel how much he disliked him, but not in an aggressive way, more of a disappointed way. He talked about their past and how they all used to be close, but it seemed as if the death of the pack’s gamma had torn them all apart then the Beta, Jack, finding his mate in another pack had messed things up. “Usually, the mate would go to the others pack, generally the female comes to the male’s pack unless they are a higher rank. Alex isn’t a high rank but her sister is mated to the Beta of their pack, so she doesn’t want to leave. Jack is loyal to Alpha Fenn but misses her when shes not here so its difficult.” Nathan explained as we trudged through the thin forest back towards his pack. “So why doesn’t he just go to her pack?” I asked and Nathan huffed. “Hes a beta, the second in command…” He said, like it made sense to me. “I understand but surely if he loves her then he would follow her no matter what. Can’t you get a new Beta?” Nathan turned to look at me with his mouth agape as if I had just sprouted horns. “What?” I asked, genuinely confused. “No, the alpha, beta, gamma and delta train their entire lives for their roles within the pack. The omegas too. Its not like a job. Think of it as your training to become the maiden, I know it might have all been a rouse, but I imagine you have been training your entire life for it…” I nodded, furrowing my eyebrows in thoughtfulness, he was right, even if the end game had been different, I was sure that my mother hadn’t always been evil, and I had trained for a long time. “So, what happens if a lead role gets killed?” I asked cautiously, knowing about Spencer. He thought it over for a second, a wave of emotions hitting me. “There are rare circumstances where there may be someone trained to take their place. A gamma is a little easier to replace as their main job is to protect the luna and work with the omegas. Ive kind of taken over that role for now as being the Delta I was already working with most of the pack to train them to protect themselves and to fight. However, most replacements tend to be the children of the original role. The Beta before Jack could take over, but no ones asked him. I think…” He gulped, and I could sense he didn’t want to speak bad of his fellow wolves. “I think part of the problem is that Fenn knows there’s a problem with Jack, but he doesn’t want to admit it.” I nodded. “I understand. Especially after everything he has been through, he is probably just happy that he still has half a beta if not the whole package.” Nathan looked at me, his face studying mine. “I mean because he could have lost his luna and then he lost his gamma.” He nodded. “Come on, we aren’t far now.” Nathan’s POV We continued walking from early morning until early evening before I could see the packs borders. We were one of the few acks that were so far away from civilization. A lot of our allied packs were linked closely with the cities and towns around us. The snow had been falling more up on the mountains, but it actually worked in our favour as Freybelle was able to climb the mountain easier with the grip of the snow. “Are we there yet?” She moaned but then giggled, knowing she was doing it on purpose to annoy me. I shot her my annoyance and heard another giggle. Now I remembered she could sense my emotions I was more cautious with what I was feeling but I didn’t hide anything from her. “Nearly, See that smoke.” I pointed and she looked up, nodding. “That will be the main house’s fireplace.” She smiled and started walking again, heading in that direction. Nathan is that you? I heard through a mind link but I heard panic. Yes Fenn, its me. Who is with you… that energy. I frowned and stopped, causing Freybelle to stop, looking back at me with concern. “I should have known.” I growled out loud. “Known what?” Freybelle asked, her face now worried. I held up a hand to signify I would be a few minutes. Someone who is here to help us. I would never put anyone in the pack in danger Fenn. I answered and there wasn’t an answer straight away but then I heard Luna Sylvia’s voice. Shes a witch! I could hear the fear in her voice. She is Luna, but a good one, she went through the same thing as you and was betrayed by her coven. She bares the same scars as you and more, but she can also heal them. She wants to heal you and help us take down the coven. Why? She stammered. Because the coven was her family, her own mother and sister tried to kill her and succeeded in killing her best friend. Again, there was silence and Freybelle was looking more and more worried. “My Luna is afraid.” I said and she nodded. “Is there anything I can do?” She asked, her eyes open wide. I shook my head, there wasn’t. It was for the leaders to decide whether we could enter the pack borders or not. Ok Nathan, we trust you, but come straight to the pack house. Freybelle’s POV I was sat in a warm, fluffy chair in a large living room that was decorated with pastel pink curtains and cushions. There were pictures on nearly every single wall and I could tell that a lot of them had been done by children. I was cradling a cup of hot chocolate in my lap and being stared at intently by who I could only assume was Jack whilst Nathan was talking to the Alpha and Luna in another room. “So… you must be Jack?” I asked, trying to be polite. He narrowed his eyes at me but nodded. “Its nice to meet you. Id never met a wolf before I me Nathan.” I smiled but he still didn’t say anything to me. Well, this isn’t awkward. Instead of attempting to talk again I just concentrated o drinking my hot chocolate. I could feel anxiety bubbling within my chest but for some reason I knew Nathan would keep me safe. I had nearly finished my drink and wondered what was happening in the other room. I knew I could cast a spell to increase my hearing, but I was worried that if I remotely moved in a magical way that Jack would tear me apart. I shuddered thinking about it. Then the doors opened, and Nathan and the leaders of the pack walked in. The Luna was looking at me and I could sense fear spewing out of her, taking over everyone else’s emotions. I head to put a hand to my head as it actually hurt, for the first time ever. “Are you ok Frey?” Nathan asked, placing his hand on my shoulders. I smiled at the use of the nickname again and nodded. “The fear is just a little overwhelming, I’ll be ok.” Then I sensed confusion before it was quickly replaced with fear again. “Freybelle…” Nathan looked at me and I realised I had never told him my surname. “Thorne” I answered, still holding my head as Nathan sat beside me. “Well, Freybelle Thorne, I would like you to meet Alpha Fenn and Luna Sylvia.” I looked at them both and smiled, nodding as their names were said. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I am sorry…” I didn’t know what else to say. Nathan looked between me and the leaders. “Freybelle is an empath, she can sense your emotions, it can be a tad annoying, but it helps communications. She can sense your fear, Luna.” Nathan said and Luna Sylvia took a sharp breath in. Then I saw her look at her husband, he nodded then she left the room. I breathed out a gasp as the pain stopped in my head. Now I could feel concern coming from Nathan and a touch of fear, anger and curiosity coming from the Alpha.
