Chapter 19
Nathan’s POV
I glared at the person I had called my Alpha for so long and saw a different person from the man I had grown up with. Sure, when he had thought he had lost Sylvia he was wounded and her not being the same after the a*******n had played heavily on him, but he was different too. I realised now that the reason I could say with such confidence to Freybelle that I would leave with her was because the pack was broken, and I don’t think it could be fixed.
“What is wrong with you?” Fenn said once everyone was out of the room. I looked at him with a raised eyebrow.
“Me?” I asked, genuinely confused.
“Youre acting weird. Youre fighting with Jack and showing me attitude. Youre hiding things from us and siding with a witch.” I had to resist the urge to roll my eyes.
“I’m not siding with Freybelle. She has come here with no ill intentions. She wants revenge against her coven, the ones who tortured her and killed her friend. I dot know what else I can tell you. Shes done everything you’ve asked of her so far. Stayed locked up, wrote lists, found the right spells to help the Luna and to find the coven. Meanwhile, shes putting everything about herself to one side…” I sighed. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about us being mates, but it didn’t happen the way I have been told and with her being mostly human, she couldn’t help me figure it out. Shes tried though…”
“What do you mean?” He asked, his arms now crossed and him looking at me with an accusatory stare.
“The stories ive been told and things Ive witnessed were immediate and magic. People were drawn to each other with magnetism and overbearing urges. Its not happened like that with Frey. She was out cold when I first felt the sparks, but they were extremely muted. Then they’ve become stronger over time. She feels them too but not extreme like we should. I mean I don’t even know if human mates feel the sparks. Shes been researching things but there’s nothing in our teachings about this.” He frowned again.
“You need to reject her.” He said, his tone cold and flat. I looked at him like he had gone mad.
“I will not, you know how long ive waited for a mate. No matter if the bond is different, I want this.”
“What if its not the bond?” He asked.
“How can it not be?” I sighed, rubbing my head as a headache began to come on.
“Maybe shes spelled you.” I laughed, a bitter laugh.
“She hasn’t. Ive witnessed her spells and like I said before. She was out cold when I first felt the sparks. She was dehydrated, hungry and out of magic by the time she found me.” He eyed me suspiciously again. “You say ive changed, but what happened to trusting me? Just because shes a witch… We have seen bad werewolves, heard about evil rogues but you don’t charr all wolves with the same brush. There are millions of witches too, we can’t treat her the same as the ones who hurt the Luna, even if they are related to her.” He sighed and I could tell he was talking to his wolf and possibly even mind linking Luna Sylvia.
“Shes the daughter of the with who hurt the Luna. Goddess Nathan! Shes related to them, and I think shes somehow involved. I will never trust another witch, ever. I’m grateful for her help but I see it purely as repaying the hurt that was inflicted on the Luna by her family. Once she has done her part, she leaves… one way or another.” I knew exactly what he was implying.
“Then I will leave with her... one way or another.” I replied, staring him down. I knew he would see it as a challenge, but I didn’t care. He would not threaten my mate.
“Be careful Nathan.” He glared, before turning to the door.
“Oh, I intend to be.” I growled back.
Freybelle’s POV
The door swung open, and The Alpha stormed out not saying a word. I ran into the room to see Nathan still sat on the bed, but he was seething. I hadn’t heard the conversation, but I could sense the tension in the room and feel how angry they both were.
John, the bodyguard had stayed with me, but the Luna had left to see Jack. She didn’t look at me or say a word to me, but I could sense the fear mixed with anger. Their fear of me was slowly turning into hatred.
“Nathan?” I asked cautiously, moving towards him. He looked up at me and before I could react, he was pulling me to him. The hug was strong, and I felt his emotions pouring into me. I was soothing him in a way he had never felt before and I smiled, glad I could help.
“When you’ve don’t the spell for the Luna and we’ve sorted your mother out, we leave, together.” He said, his voice stern. I was shocked. That wasn’t the plan, at least not my plan.
“Nathan… you can’t leave your friends and family. I can’t be the one to come between that.”
“You aren’t! You just made me realise how broken this pack has been, for a long time. It needs help but the Alpha, Luna and Beta are so hung up on their own problems that they cannot seek help.” I sighed heavily as he put his chin on my head. “Even if this thing turns out to be something else entirely. I still love you Freybelle. I want to be with you.”
“You’re serious?” I asked, moving so I could look into his eyes. I knew the answer before he said it as I felt swarms of love waft around me.
“I am.” He answered before kissing me so deeply it took my breath away. The butterflies in my stomach were back and the tingling in my lips was shooting through me. I pulled him to me, even though his body was already pressed to me it didn’t feel close enough.
“Come on, I mind linked the alpha and he gave us permission to shop for the things we need ourselves.” He said when we broke the kiss, panting for breath.
“Oh?” I asked, confused.
“I think hes realised I wont back down on you, regardless of the mate bond or not. They are almost being… racist. Is that the right thing to call it?” I laughed.
“Yeah, believe it or not, it is. Vampires get it the worst though, they are especially hated amongst both sides of the coin, with humans and magical creatures.” He laughed as he grabbed his jeans and began undoing his gown. I turned around, my face heating up immensely. I heard another chuckle and knew he was finding my embarrassment funny. He changed and we headed out of the medical centre. I looked around in awe. When I was being brought here, all I could think about was getting to Nathan quickly so I hadn’t took in our surroundings. The packs land was actually huge and there were more houses than I had originally thought.
“Nathan, how many wolves live here?” I asked, nervous now.
“Around 300. This is the main area to come and get food, or medical attention or anything really. Theres a seamstress, a coffee shop and a mini supermarket. We should be able to get most of your things there.”
“Really?” I was really nervous now. 300 wolves who could potentially hate me. We walked through the dirt roads to a large building that looked just like a large house from the outside, but the windows were strewn with everything you could think of. Gardening tools, appliances for the house, food, drink, DIY kits and much more. We entered the shop, and I was surprised to see Dawn.
“Oh, hello Nathan, hello Freybelle.” She smiled sweetly and I couldn’t help but admire her. She seemed much older than Nathan but there was a younger quality to her.
“Hello Dawn.” I answered as Nathan nodded.
“You are working today?” Nathan gruffed and she nodded.
“Sure am, being the Luna’s go to omega pays ok, but I need extra cash for my hobbies.” She laughed. “What can I help you find?” Nathan handed her my list, and she looked at it.
“I think Seamus has most of these things but maybe not the mirror. I’ll go and ask him about that. What colour do the candles need to be?” She asked and I was genuinely confused at how polite she was being. There wasn’t an ounce of fear from her, even though I knew she had lost her husband to my coven.
“White would be perfect but if you have silver and purple, they could work for one of the rituals too. I would need 2 of each and 4 white, or 8 white if possible.” I said, smiling at her. It was nice to find another wolf who didn’t radiate fear or hatred when I was around them. She nodded before heading out. “She seems nice.” I said to Nathan who was now looking at some things on a shelf near the till.
“She is remarkably nice. I told you about her husband. We had always known each other, her being around the luna so much but after he died, she needed someone. I’m sorry you found out the way you did.” I shook my head. I couldn’t deny there was still a pit of jealousy within me, but I didn’t dislike her, and I was glad he had someone before he found me, too. God, I was honestly starting to think of us as staying together. I shook my head, wanting to clear the thoughts. The Alpha had made it quite clear if I didn’t leave straight away, he would probably kill me. I didn’t want Nathan to have to deal with that.
“Here we are. Silver and Purple and White candles. Most of the herbs we have are dry. Is that, ok?”
“That’s perfect actually. It will speed things up.” I answered.
“He doesn’t have the mirror though, but he says he can have one in a few days if it doesn’t need to be anything fancy.” I chuckled.
“Plain is fine. It just needs to be a mirror. I could do the spell with water, but water is fickle and isn’t always honest.” She looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
“How can water be fickle?” I realised I had just spoken normally about magic, forgetting they knew nothing about it.
“Oh, sorry… The elements all have their own behaviours, believe it or not. Snow being the purest, fire is… well fiery. Water is always running, never wanting to be caught in one place. Air is breezy but powerful and the earth is grounded.” I saw Dawn chuckling. “I know, the puns are great but it’s true.”
“I don’t doubt it, I guess I just never imagined it that way.” I smiled. “Is there anything else you need that isn’t on the list?”
“Oh, I could do with lots of things, but I tried to keep it minimal so…” I stopped, not wanting to bad mouth her Luna and Alpha. “This will be fine. Thank you. Erm…”
“I assume Nathan is paying?” She smiled and headed towards the till. “Nathan, wallet over here please!” She yelled and I had to stifle a laugh. Nathan sauntered over with a few extra things in his arms. I saw a bottle of wine and a few food items and smiled. He paid for the items as Dawn bagged them up. She handed me my items and Nathan his before smiling. “Thanks! And Freybelle… I’m sorry about the Luna. She doesn’t trust or like witches after what happened. She is a lovely person really, but the ritual affected her badly.”
“I understand that I really do.” I nodded, smiling. Nathan grumbled something under his breath. I held out my hand to shake her hand and she smiled taking mine but then my mind went blank. A vision? It started that way, of her thinking about the day I met the luna, but it started to warp and change as smoke seemed to fill the room. No, it wasn’t a memory of hers it was something else. I felt myself falling as everything went black. A few seconds after the darkness I could hear a voice calling me. It sounded like Nathan but there was another voice too. Deeper, gravellier. I tried to walk towards it as smoke billowed around me.
“Freybelle Thorne?” I heard a melodic woman’s voice call. I turned to see the woman from my dream, last night, stood in front of me. Her dress was trailing along the floor and the smoke seemed to be emanating from her.
“Who are you?” I asked, in awe at her beauty. Then it hit me. There were moons around the hem of her dress and sewn into her bodice. “Moon Goddess? Artemis?” She laughed.
“That is one of the many names my sister goes by. I am, sort of, but also not. My name is Merena, and my story is a long one. I’m sorry for greeting you like this. Nathan is extremely worried.” I looked to her side as she looked down. I hadn’t noticed her absent mindedly stroking a wolf besides her.
“Blaze?” I questioned and he answered me, actually talked.
“In the flesh.” He chuckled in a growl with both Nathans voice but his own too. I looked back to Merena, wondering what was happening.
“I cannot talk now, there isn’t much time. I will come to you again. The next time you have a vision I will be able to find you again. Wait for me.”
“Wait!” I shouted as she began to disappear, and my vision once again turned black.
