Chapter 22 Nathan’s POV Had I heard right? Something had happened that Freybelle had seen between the Luna and Alpha. I hated the way the Alpha spoke to her but at least the Luna was being softer now. I don’t know why I had gotten so angry when I didn’t know what the conversation had been about, but Frey’s face had said enough. She was angry about something as I saw a flash of orange in her eyes. “What did he say?” I asked as we reached our home. I opened the door, and she walked through, her shoulders tight and her head held high. “Its not fair of me to tell you something that was said in private… its not even fair that I get to see it. I could have lived much better not knowing it Nathan…” I looked at her face, broken and sad and immediately knew she was right. I pulled her towards me instead, encasing her in my arms. “I know. I’m sorry.” I said, hugging her tight. “I just don’t know why I have this… gift? Curse? I don’t even know what it is anymore.” She said, her voice breaking a little. “It could be a gift. Think about it…” She pulled away and looked into my eyes. I could see hope there, hope for a reason to keep going. I don’t think she was the type to give up, but it was clear it was getting to her. “People don’t communicate well. I’m case and point. People tell others what they want to hear to keep the peace. They don’t voice opinions for fear of having one that isn’t typical. They don’t tell people how they truly feel and mask their emotions for fear of rejection or ridicule. You get the true, raw person. You’ve seen parts of me that I could have hidden. You’ve brought conversations out of me that I might not have had before…” She looked at me and I felt her relax. “I suppose…” She sighed, grabbing my hand and leading me to the sofa. She sat down and curled her legs underneath her. I remembered she was wearing a dress she had found in town, and it made her look even smaller than before. Now with her legs curled up underneath and her face looking crestfallen and vulnerable, she looked even younger than I had previously thought. I sat besides her, still holding her hand. “There must be a reason for all of this.” She laughed, but it was a bitter laugh. “That’s not true at all. We’re all part of a bigger story. Sometimes our story makes someone else’s happy ending.” I frowned, and wondered if she was right but I didn’t want to believe that. Truly horrible people deserved unhappiness but the people that try shouldn’t. “As wolves we believe our other half makes us whole. However, there are wolves that reject their mates. Why? Because they believe it is a wrong match or something else. Ive seen wolves reject mates because they aren’t of high status, or because they aren’t strong or beautiful. Their stories often ended in hurt and unhappiness, true but the person who was rejected usually finds happiness in some form, even if its just that they can prove their original mate wrong. So, surely that means people who strive for goodness will eventually get that happiness? Your gift must have been given to you for a reason, to help someone or to help you. There will be bad moving forward but, in the end, surely it serves a purpose?” She sighed and looked at me with a small smile. “Its so sweet that youre trying to find the positive in this. A few weeks ago, I’d have expected you to just tell me to book up and get on with it.” She laughed and I had to agree with her. It’s only been a few weeks, but my attitude was shifting, not that I wanted anyone else but her to find out. “Youre right, and I know you are. It’s just exhausting, and I think my low mood is because I’m completely spent of energy.” She sighed and I moved so she could lean her head on me. “I do believe I have this for a reason, and our mate bond, its not normal so I’m hoping we have it for a reason. I am finding myself caring for you and relying on you too much.” “That’s good then, because I feel the same.” I said, stroking her hair. “I believe the goddess has a part in this, she created the mate bond, and she can take it away or change the rules. You ay you have multiple goddesses, but your moon goddess must be the same one.” She nodded into my shoulder. I pressed a kiss into her hair and sighed happily. Freybelle’s POV Something about this was freeing and recharging. I felt energy flowing between us. I turned to look up at him and saw him leaning against the back of the sofa, his eyes closed as he stroked my hair. I smiled before moving so I could kiss his cheek. I moved my knees, so I was on them fully and moved to lean into him. He must have felt me because instead of kissing his cheek I found his mouth. I felt him smile into my lips and I chuckled before kissing him. I felt his arms around my waist as he pulled me closer to him. I felt a low rumbling coming from his chest as I stroked my hands through his hair. Nathan moved so I was now straddling him, and I felt his head move down to my chest and shoulders. Then he broke away. “Frey…” I moaned from him stopping. “Yes?” I asked and his face clouded for a second and I felt a surge of anger from him. Wait, what? Wasn’t he finally accepting me? I sighed, getting off his lap. “Sorry, the Alpha wants me.” He growled and offering no more explanation, he got up and left the house. I groaned out loud at the frustration I was feeling from everything. I honestly thought after the last few days his attitude towards me had changed. I felt love radiating from him. However, when I thought about it there was always still a level of annoyance, as if I was still a hindrance to him. I sighed heavily and decided I needed to do something to take my mind off this evening. I grabbed a book from the library. It was a book about aliens and modern technology being used for nefarious purposes. After a few hours, almost 2am, I heard Nathan entering the house again. He felt tired, annoyed and resigned too. “Is everything ok?” I asked, yawning from the sofa. “Oh, youre still up.” It wasn’t a question, just a statement of fact and it caused me to frown. “The alpha had a few things to discuss with me that apparently couldn’t wait. Sorry Freybelle.” Ouch, the nickname was gone. What did the Alpha say? I moved towards him and went to stroke his face, but he moved away. “What?” I asked, before realising he was holding something back. He didn’t want me to touch him because there was something he wanted to hide. I narrowed my eyes at him. “I’m tired Freybelle. I need sleep. The Alpha has given me double training duties tomorrow and I have to take you along. Apparently, you are not to leave my view at any point…” He sighed. “Hes making things difficult on purpose, and I don’t know why.” “I do…” I mumbled; he was trying to keep us apart. Sure, we would be closer together in person but there was no secret that Nathan was annoyed by me sometimes, he also took his job very seriously and the alpha knew I was getting bored. I would absolutely want to wander around and not just sit and watch training. He was trying to cause discourse between us. He didn’t believe there was a bond, and Nathan had questioned it too giving him cause to try and see if it was real. The problem was that a niggling within me wondered if Nathan was still questioning it. I sighed. “Ok well, ill say goodnight then.” I didn’t wait for an answer and went to the guest room, shutting the door before I could change my mind and beg him. Nathan’s POV I wanted to break things. Alpha Fenn had called me through the mind link, stating it was urgent. However, when I got there it was purely a training rota. His reasoning was because of the upcoming battle. Now Frey had shown her potential and seemed like less of a threat they wanted to move forward with plans to find the coven and we would need our wolves training harder. Then the truth came out. “We still don’t trust her Nathan. This mate bond you share isn’t a mate bond. People who know you think it’s a spell…” I glared at him. “I know my own mind and body Alpha.” I answered. “Do you? You’ve wanted a mate since your parents died Nathan. You were lonely and I think that was something she could easily prey on. I no longer think she is connected to the attack on the Luna, but I think there’s something else happening. Thin about it, she has no one left, what better way to get someone than to force a bond with someone powerful.” I frowned at my Alpha, thinking seriously about his words. I couldn’t deny that a few weeks ago I would have completely agreed with him and thought the same. The only reason I didn’t was because the bond I had felt was when she was unconscious, could she have cast something before I spotted her? I sighed out loud. “I don’t know what this bond is but I don’t think its nefarious.” I answered, keeping my teeth together so I didn’t say something I would regret. “Ok, look, how about we test her… You told me shes getting bored and wants to do something. From now on, she stays by your side, through the training, through everything you do on a daily basis. She will become so bored that either she explodes and shows her true colours, she changes who the spell belongs to and moves on from you and well know, or nothing changes and youre right and I stop harping on about this.” The Alpha said, his arms folded. “Ok…” I sighed, knowing nothing would change but being annoyed. She would get bored and absolutely hinder my training schedule. I sighed heavily, knowing the next few days would be tough.
