Chapter 33
Freybelle’s POV
I did not want to do this. I didn’t want to force someone against their will. I hated that Asher wouldn’t talk to me, but I also understood why. He was so far under my mother’s thumb that even if he was spelled, I doubt being freed from it would help him. I knew tears were falling down my face and everyone was confused by me. All they saw was an enemy, someone who had hurt me but also was part of hurting their Luna. He deserved death in their eyes. However, I didn’t. I saw a frail young boy with years of life left. A boy who had taken the wrong path and deserved the chance for redemption. I knew Asher was older than me, but most witches lived well into their 400’s so he had the chance to change his life and do good.
“I don’t know if I can do this.” I stuttered to Nathan. He looked at me concerned and switched to the mind link.
If you don’t want to, we can try something else. He said and I shook my head.
Any other way and they’ll know it’s me searching for them. This way Asher will be the one. But binding him…
“Whats taking so long.” Alpha Fenn snapped, and I was brought out of our communications. I was staring at Asher when I answered.
“I’m sorry Alpha. The magic used to bind someone to oneself is dark magic. I fear it but also don’t want to use it. You stated you thought I could turn dark because of my heritage so please forgive me if I’m stood here thinking over everything I could do instead.” I said, keeping my tone steady. The Alpha tutted.
“Don’t worry, if you decide to embrace the dark and attack us, we’re all ready to kill you.” He stated out loud, sneering, taunting, and I wasn’t surprised. He’d spent the morning glaring and speaking loudly about how he still didn’t trust me. I felt the hate radiating from him at all times but today he was also furious, and I didn’t know why.
Ignore him. I heard Nathan say and I tried to smile a little at him. I felt calming waves rush over me and I was grateful for Nathan and for the mate bond we shared closer now. I took a deep breath and nodded for a few guards to bring Asher out. I looked at him with sadness in my eyes.
“Last chance Asher… please…” I pleaded with him. He spat at my feet, his strength waning from not eating the last few days. I sighed heavily and prayed to the goddess for guidance. Should I do this or was thee an alternative. I understood that by doing this I could be stopping a greater evil. I knew by the things Asher had been buying there was a possibility of a third victim in this. Was Ashers dead worth it? Then I felt something, something Asher had been hiding from me all week, his emotions. I felt his plea for death, and I felt a sadness. I looked at him, tears still fresh on my face and even though he was glaring at me, I felt his praying too. “Please Asher…” I wanted him to do it himself, to help us and help our coven but he still refused. “Fine…” I said, anger coming on, but it was anger that he was giving up instead of fighting, it was anger that he wasn’t helping anyone. I began binding him to me.
Nathan’s POV
Everyone gasped as Frey started shouting out runes and speaking in a different language. I was watching her closely because she had been so worried that using this magic might warp her mind. She was working quickly but it didn’t look like Asher would fight her. Finally, she was kneeling down, and she placed her hands over his arms and her eyes turned silver.
“What’s happening.” Sam asked, beside me.
“Shes seeing his memories.” I answered, not taking my eyes off her. When she had finished, she was panting hard and I saw tears streaming down her face but there was also a hardness to her that had started, a resolve she didn’t have before. She nodded to Asher and then began setting up the things she needed for scrying. She had said there as no need for a salt circle this time but we all should stay back.
I saw her place the mirror in Ashers lap. He was sat cross legged on the floor but seemed like a rag doll, he wasn’t sat upright or rigid, he was slumped. His shoulders were drooping, and his hands were on the ground facing up. His head was leaning to one side and his mouth was slightly open. Only his eyes seemed to move at his will, and they looked terrified.
Frey began lighting candles, stating runes and words, then she drank a drink she had prepared earlier and then gave the rest to Asher. She made a gesture on his throat so he would swallow it, and I knew she had full control over him. I could see her shaking as she did all of this and knew she was also terrified. Finally, she went to sit behind Asher, and I saw her eyes glow with a completely new colour, something Id not seen before. Her eyes radiated purple, but you could still see the blue of her iris, unlike when she saw memories or got angry. As Frey moved her body parts, Asher did the same. She raised her hand as if holding the mirror to her face and he mimicked the behaviour.
“What the…” I heard Jack say from behind me.
“She told us what to expect.” I answered in a low growl.
“Yeah, but its different to see it Nathan, Goddess!” Jack sounded like he wanted to throw up and I couldn’t blame him. The level of control she had over another witch was unreal, meaning she could easily overpower any one of us and do the same if we were unsuspecting. I wasn’t afraid though because I could see the good in her and even now, through the ritual she was casting I could sense her anger, her disgust and most of all her fear.
“There!” I heard Frey shout as she got Asher to hold up the mirror and show us the location. Two omegas’ ran forward with a camera and sapped a picture while a warrior also marked the area off on a map. I felt Frey’s resolve slipping as she knew the task was nearly over. Then she let the mirror drop and I heard her saying words slowly. Her eyes stopped glowing, and she moved around Asher, blowing out candles and kicking over mounds she had built. Then she knelt down in front of him.
“Please…” I heard Asher say to her. She looked at me then at the Alpha.
“Are you sure?” She asked and he nodded, although barely. I knew Frey had dropped the binding spell and Asher wasn’t fighting. What had Frey seen earlier?
“Freybelle!” Alpha Fenn shouted but before she could turn around Asher had grabbed something from Freybelle’s waistband, pushed her forwards and then he swallowed it.
“No!” Frey shouted but it was too late as she regained her balance and launched for him. He began frothing at the mouth and finally he fell backwards.
“He’s dead.” Sam shouted after rushing to his side and testing his pulse. Frey was crying but she also looked complete, like she had finished something. Had she planned this? I sighed, hoping if she had that she was a better stress than I thought she could be.
“What did you do?” The Alpha screamed at her and I stood in front of her to protect her.
“I didn’t do anything.” She said, her head held high. “He stole some herbs from me. He is a witch and spelled them to be more potent, they killed him.” She held out a few satchels which had bene tied to her waist. Check them, they are all harmless if used correctly but Sweet Cicely which I asked for, should only be used in a small amount for divination. I needed it to contact the spirit realm to scry. He knew what I would need and took advantage. It isn’t poisonous on its own but in great qualities it can induce a dream like state, he spelled it to make sure he stayed there forever…” I saw tears slipping down her face again.
“Alpha…” Jack was saying by his side. “She’s telling the truth, she asked for it, we knew what it was. She didn’t give it him; we all saw him take it from her before he pushed her.” Freybelle broke down and fell to the floor. I saw Jack lean down to her and grab her shoulder. Her eyes were closed, as she cried harder and harder.
“She didn’t want him dead, she fought for you to spare him, why would she do anything to hurt him?” I asked, although I suspected she had et him take the herbs and I think I knew why. The Alpha roared and left the group. Jack looked at me with concern before turning and following him back to the pack house.
“Right, everyone, I hope youre packed, we move out within the next few hours.” I shouted to everyone, and they all scattered to get ready.
“Frey, are you ok?” I asked expecting to turn and see her still crying but she was standing, her eyes clear and tear free. Her face was straight, and her lips pressed tightly together.
“I’m fine.” She said but I could see anger radiating from her.
“You planned this?” I asked and she nodded. She began to explain but I stopped her. “I understand why. Better by your hand in mercy than at the Alphas.” She nodded before stepping forwards and putting her head against my chest, her arms hanging loosely by her side. There was something else going on, but I would leave her with her thoughts for now, she had been through enough and there was more to come.
