But before he could speak she had run across the room to confront him, her hands reached out towards him, her eyes tragic in their fear, rose to his.
“We must go away,” she said. “We must go away quickly. Do you not understand? He will kill you or imprison you for what you have done to him. Quickly! Leave while – you are still free.”
As she spoke, her agitation grew until at the end she was almost shrieking the words, until suddenly she lost control of herself and with her clenched fists beat against his chest.
“Go! Go!” she cried. “He will kill you and I cannot bear it.”
