I ran until my legs ached in pain. I had to find a safe spot and rest. I could make out a system of caves in the mountain up ahead. I moved cautiously forward, my senses heightened to see if there was any danger. I sniffed the air and smelled nothing. That was good sign. I had to keep moving.
The entrance of the cave was huge, I couldn't stay there. I had to make my way further in. I stayed in my wolf form to make sure that I could see in the dark.
"Amaya, find us a safe place to rest." I said.
Amaya, my wolf, was strong. She was the perfect blend of my father and mother wolves. She had silver fur with black ears and paws.
"I will take care of us in the cave. I am not sensing any danger here. This cave has no animal smell here. It's strange." Amaya explained.
It was strange. I didn't care though. I had to get to a safe place. Deeper and deeper through the cave we went until we came to a small spot that had a ledge I could rest on. I could stay hidden up on the ledge, no one would see me if I was laying down.
Exhaustion set in quickly and sleep came fast, but the nightmares started immediately. The screams and cries, haunted my sleep. I could hear the howls from the wolves and the growls of the bears. New sounds that I didn't realize were happening during my escape came flooding into my dream. My mother screamed for me to run, except this time I went back for her. I would not let my mother die again! I quickly shifted and ran towards the bear and tall man. I was going to help my mother! When the man saw me charging he shifted into his light brown bear and slapped me to the ground.
The bear was strong, he was higher than warrior status. I could tell by his strength. Before I could get up, the other bear snapped my mother's neck and turned to me. The light brown bear returned to his human form, while the other bear pinned me down. I felt the cold silver blade on my neck. As the blade pierced my wolf's neck, I let out a small whimper. I knew this was not how it should end. In death, my body slowly transformed back to its human form, I saw my wolf leaving my body!
"Amaya! Don't leave me!". I jolted awake.
"Rain, I am here. You were dreaming, it's ok we are safe.". Amaya was still with me. It was only a dream. Thank Goddess.
I couldn't tell what time it was or how long I had been asleep, but I cannot dream again. Not tonight. I laid on my side and tried to think about the events that led up to the attack. There were no warnings, there were no indications that the bears would attack my pack. My father, Michael, was away on business with his beta, Robert. They were trying to get two packs to make a peace treaty. Rashad, my father's gamma and warrior was to stay behind and protect our pack in their absence.
I didn't see Rashad at dinner time, he must have been patrolling the borders. Our pack doubled patrols when my father was gone. I tried to figure out how all of this came to be, but I knew it was going to drive me mad.
My poor mother. My father would come back and be devastated. They had been together forever. They were mates, the love of each other's lives.
I had to stay here and wait. I needed to make sure that there was no threat so that I could tell my father what happened and what I saw. He would go to the wolf council and demand that they declare war on the werebears. He would need me.
Tears streamed down my face thinking of it just being my father and I. My mother was gone. Her wolf had gone to the Goddess where she would enjoy a beautiful afterlife.
I was still on my side in the fetal position. My body was back to aching and my heart was broken. This cave would protect me, no one saw me escape. I was sure if there were survivors they would be looking for me. My father would send out his best warriors to look for me. It was best for me to stay here and stay safe.
I could hear water droplets hit the floor, it was making a song that was calming. I was so tired. I fell asleep, but this time I did not dream. There was nothing but darkness.
I woke up again, but this time the feeling of being alone really hit me. I noticed time seemed to stop here. I didn't know how long I had been here. I kept drifting in and out of sleep. I was heartbroken. I cried for my people, my mom, my dad. I wished I could change all of this, prevented it from happening.
In one of my dreams a bright light appeared. There was a voice coming from it. It sounded like music. I remembered the voice saying, "Rain, do not worry my child. I will fix this. Rest up and get strong. I will fix this, I promise."
My eyes slowly opened as I woke up again from a sleep. Total darkness engulfed me. I had no idea how long I was asleep that time. I needed to find my way out and get to safety until I could return to my pack, it was too dangerous being alone. I shifted back into my wolf, I could see better this way and if I came upon something I would be ready.
I leaped from the ledge and looked around cautiously. I sniffed the air to figure out which direction I should go. The cave had many different tunnels and I chose the one that was opposite the way I came in. I would work my way out of the back of the mountain and take the long way home. There used to be a creek in our area, it's dried up now but if I could find it, it would help guide me home.
Slowly, I made my way forward, always alert to anything that could be in the cave with me. The cave was quiet. I could hear the sounds of water droplets hitting the floor. Being in the darkness put all of my senses on high alert. The cave seemed to go on forever. My slow pace and having to sniff the air seemed to be making my exit from the cave much longer.
I took a little tumble and got back up. I looked around quickly, scanning the area. I had come to a huge room in the cave. Different tunnels were in all directions. I was not sure which one I should take. I walked to the entrance of each tunnel and sniffed. I could smell the forest in one of the tunnels, that was the one I chose.
Cautiously, I moved ahead. The tunnel felt damp. It must have rained while I was in here. Again, moving slowly, I tiptoed ahead.
Light! There was light at the end of this tunnel. I started to run and found myself outside of the cave. It is nighttime and the moon was full. I looked around and could see the forest. I could make my way through the trees to find the old creek. I should be home within a few hours and then I would help my father figure out what we needed to do next. I had to step up and help him now.
I was sure my brother would be on his way home from college. He would need my help, too. He was close with my mother. The cave did its purpose of keeping me protected, but now I had to show my pack that I had been trained to help my father lead.
