An Act of Protection

1185 Words

The rogues hesitate at the sight of Asher striding toward them. It’s just for a second, but it’s more than enough of an opening. Asher moves. He’s fast. Faster than human, not even anything like what I saw last night between Liam and the rogues. Asher closes the distance between himself and the nearest rogue in an instant. Whatever happens next is nearly too quick for my brain to fully process. There’s a blur of motion, a harsh, animalistic sound. Then the crack of an impact that makes my stomach tighten violently. I stumble back without meaning to, but Liam is suddenly beside me. No longer across the yard. He catches me before I fully lose my footing. “Stay back,” Liam says firmly. “I’m not…” I trail off. “What is happening?” I breathe, panic rising again as I watch the scene unfold.
