I let out a low breath, shaking my head as I step back. The space between us suddenly feels a lot wider than it did a few minutes ago. “Everyone keeps saying that,” I murmur. My gaze drifts toward the window and the stretch of trees beyond it that look so harmless now in the daylight. “Not yet,” I repeat and huff out a humorless laugh. “I’m starting to think that’s code for ‘never.’” “It’s not,” my father says. I glance back at him, raising a brow slightly. “You want to try convincing me of that?” Another pause and another moment where it feels like he might actually say something that matters.
